Don't count the days, make the days count

My friend at church has a personal number he keeps track of everyday. It's the number of days he has left of useful ministry on earth before he goes home with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:1-5,6-10). His life verse is Psalm 90:12 and says, "Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom, (NIV, ESV)". This all came back to me when a friend who was recently diagnosed with cancer posted a meme saying, "don't count the days, make the days count".

We have a certain amount of time (God only knows)
It's counter to what many people may perceive but the only way we can be of any earthly good is to be heaven minded.

  • "LORD, make me to know my end And what is the extent of my days; Let me know how transient I am. (Psalm 39:4)
  • The wicked is thrust down by his wrongdoing, But the righteous has a refuge when he dies. (Proverbs 14:32)

In Luke 12:34-36, Jesus insists we evaluate ourselves by where we put our treasure. He says in effect, be ready for action and keep our lamps lit. Be like servants waiting for their master to return. The king James version says it this way, "loins be girded". This reminded me of Ephesians 6:14 in relation to the armor of God to stand against the schemes of the devil, we are to Stand firm with the belt of truth fastened around our waist. 1 Peter 1:13 ties these ideas together, "Therefore prepare your minds for action. Be sober-minded. Set your hope fully on the grace to be given you at the revelation of Jesus Christ."

  • Being heavenly minded means we give light to people through good deeds  (Matthew 5:14-16)
  • Being heavenly minded means we follow Jesus - who died for our sins, rose to life and lives forever (1 John 5:12-13; Revelation 1:18; John 14:6; Hebrews 7:25)
  • Being heavenly minded means we care for the lost people (Mark 5:2-6,8) more than we care for our wealth (Mark 5:13-14,15)
    • This is the part where many people don't accept Jesus, when it cost them a heard of pigs (Mark 5:16-17)
    • But it also has the greatest world changing impact (Mark 5:18-20)

Application: Where is it that I'm putting my treasure? Is my heart in it? Teach me to number my days, so that I can gain a heart of wisdom.
