Pure desire - pilgrims progress into the kingdom of heaven

Enjoyed breakfast with my friend who has been inspired by Pure Desire. We talked about freedom we have in Christ to follow a new way of living that fills us rather than destroys our well being and distracts us from our purpose. The devil comes to kill steal and destroy but Jesus comes to give life to the full. We talked about Young Washington and Brink of War. Wholesome entertainment that edifies rather than terrifies. Stories that you want to talk about rather than shame and guilt you hope nobody finds out about. I'm looking forward to leading Rooted in Faith Bible study with my church, helping men come out of Babylon into the kingdom of heaven.

Reminds me of this part of Pilgrims Progress - interpreter bringing light where there are shadows - giving light to the rest of our journey (Passion vs Patience,  Hopelessness vs Hope). Look don't just see, listen don't just hear... Eyes that see, ears that hear and heart that understands

Gift from my mom for graduation decades after I graduated

We talked about the Thyatira — the fourth of the seven churches, addressed in Revelation 2:18–29. I was thinking about Thyatira, biblical love and sinful tolerance within the church just a month ago in Colorado.

The letter actually opens with praise: Christ commends their love, faith, service, and endurance, noting their latter works exceed the first. The charge is that they "tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess," teaching believers to commit porneia and eat food sacrificed to idols (2:20). She's given time to repent and refuses, and the judgment language is severe — a sickbed for her, tribulation for her followers, death for "her children."

  • "Jezebel" invokes memory of the Phoenician queen of 1 Kings 16–21 who imported Baal worship into Israel. The pairing of sexual immorality with idol-food is the same combination charged against Pergamum's Balaam faction.
  • To those who don't hold her teaching — those who haven't known "the deep things of Satan" — the only burden is to hold fast, with the promise of authority over the nations and the morning star.
  • Consecration is our obedience in Sanctification, thanking God for this Sabbath day reading Psalm 92

Biblical material on this is spread across law, prophecy, wisdom, gospel, and epistle, and the vocabulary itself is worth noticing first. The Hebrew zanah means to "whore" or be unfaithful, and gets used for both literal sexual acts and covenant betrayal. The Greek porneia — the New Testament's umbrella term, usually rendered "sexual immorality" — is left conspicuously undefined, which most scholars take to mean the writers assumed their readers knew the Levitical catalog behind it.

The legal core. Leviticus 18 and 20 give the fullest list: incest, adultery, bestiality, sex during menstruation, male same-sex intercourse, child sacrifice to Molech folded into the same chapter. The framing is striking — these are "the practices of Egypt and Canaan," and the land itself is said to vomit out its inhabitants over them. Deuteronomy 22 adds case law with a heavy emphasis on protecting women from false accusation and coerced sex. Adultery makes the Decalogue; so does coveting a neighbor's wife, which already moves the concern inward.

The prophetic metaphor. This is arguably the dominant thread and the one people miss. Hosea marries a promiscuous woman as a living parable; Jeremiah 2–3, Ezekiel 16 and 23 (shockingly graphic by any standard), and Malachi 2 all cast Israel's idolatry as adultery. The logic runs both directions — sexual unfaithfulness is treated as an icon of covenant unfaithfulness, and idolatry is described in explicitly sexual terms. Revelation closes the canon with the same image: Babylon as the great whore, her porneia bound up with imperial violence and luxury trade.

Jesus radicalizes and interiorizes. Matthew 5:27–30 relocates adultery to the lustful look, with deliberately absurd hyperbole about eyes and hands. His divorce sayings appeal past Mosaic concession back to Genesis 2:24 — "one flesh" as the created norm. Notably, his hardest words fall on men exploiting legal privilege, while his encounters with women accused of sexual sin (John 8, Luke 7, the Samaritan woman) are consistently disarming rather than condemnatory.

Paul gives the most developed argument, in 1 Corinthians 5–7. His case isn't primarily "the rules say so" — it's ontological: sex joins persons, even with a prostitute one becomes "one flesh," so porneia is uniquely a sin against one's own body, which is a temple of the Spirit and no longer self-owned. 1 Thessalonians 4 adds a communal-justice angle (don't wrong a brother in this matter), and the vice lists in Galatians 5, Ephesians 5, and Colossians 3 keep sexual sin in company with greed — which Paul twice calls idolatry.

Themes that recur across all of it:

  • Sex is treated as covenantal and body-joining, never as a private, self-contained transaction — the "one flesh" language does most of the theological work.
  • Sexual ethics function as a boundary marker, distinguishing Israel and then the church from surrounding cultures. The distinctiveness is part of the point.
  • The body is not autonomous — it belongs to God, and within marriage, mutually to the spouse (1 Cor 7 is unusually reciprocal for its era).
  • Interiority deepens over time, from act to desire.
  • There's a persistent exploitation and justice dimension: protection of the vulnerable, and Ezekiel 16 famously names Sodom's sin as pride and neglect of the poor.
  • Sex itself is affirmed as good. Genesis blesses it before any fall, the Song of Songs celebrates erotic love with no reproductive justification offered, and Paul assumes marriage is normal. The prohibitions aren't framed as anti-body.
  • Restoration is always available. Hosea buys his wife back; David is confronted and not discarded; Paul tells the Corinthians "such were some of you — but you were washed."

The reason people forget about God and live miserable lives (Jeremiah 2-3:5)

key verses:

"...Why then do my people say, ‘At last we are free from God! We don’t need him anymore!’... for years on end my people have forgotten me." Jeremiah 2:31-32

AIM: Every calamity's root is forgetting the God that made you and rescued you to be holy.

A) Leaders stopped asking 'Where is the LORD?' and turned to idols ruining their future (1-13)

1-3) another message to Jerusalem, "remember eagerness as young bride follows, Israel holy first child protected"

 - Interesting "holy first child" is not Isaac

4-6) Listen LORD, "worship worthless idols, become worthless. Didn't ask 'where is the LORD who saved/led out of Egypt'

7-9) fruitful land, you defiled/corrupted. Priests didn't ask 'where is the LORD?' teachers ignored Him, prophets name of Baal (Numbers 25 sex plague, 1 Kings 18:21 tested,  Romans 11 explains) - worthless idol. Children's children charged.

  • Similar message from Zephaniah 1:2-3) everything on earth, all mankind will be destroyed, Zephaniah 1:4-6) hand against Judah, Baal worship, idolatrous priests, astrologers, apostate believers
  • 1 Kings 16:29-34) Omri, evil, worse than others, married Jezebel, worshiped Baal, setup Asherah pole, Jericho rebuilt costing life of oldest and youngest sons.

10-13) sent searching elsewhere exchanging glorious God for worthless idol, abandoned fountain of living water, dug cracked cisterns

Application: Getting off course starts with wicked leaders. Yet the Lord is interceding on your behalf, giving you a thirst for his righteousness. Your broken cisterns can't hold this holy water. We are lost. Pray the Father draws us to himself. Give us the gift of faith - let us repent of ignorance, help me to release my grip on worthless idols. Awake my soul.

B) God delivered us from slavery, yet we've used our freedom to leave him (14-22)

14-17) "why Israel enslaved, tormented, destroyed? you rebelled against God, though he leading you"

18-19) "what gained from wicked world? punishment, shame - see evil bitterness = fearlessly abandon LORD."

20-22) "freed from slavery, yet said 'I won't serve God' - prostituted instead, stained guilty

Application:   I need to stop rebelling against God and let him led me in the fear of the LORD.

C) We claim to be right with God, yet we are living apart from him, living a lie (23-3:5)

23-25) "you deny worshiping images of Baal, yet lust is obvious, panting after other gods 'I can't stop'

26-27) "thief, shame only when caught, leaders bring idols, turned backs to LORD, in trouble cry out 'come and save us!'

28-30) you don't call on idols because you know the are lifeless, your rebellion punishes children, they don't respond to LORD discipline - because you killed your prophets

31-32) listen to the words of the LORD, why MY people claim freedom from God, forgetting him:

  • 33-34) plot, scheme, win lovers, clothes stained with blood of innocent/poor
  • 35) you say, 'I've done nothing wrong, God's not angry with me!' - claim you've not sinned
  • 36-37) flit from ally to ally for help, Egypt/Assyria let you down, despair/exile - LORD rejected nations you trust
  • 3:1) Divorce is final, you prostituted yourself, why are you trying to come back?
  • 2-5) Look, shrines of defilement, adultery to other gods, polluted land with brazen prostitution/wickedness, spring rain fails - shameless fake repentance, fake obedience, "you keep on doing all the evil you can."

Application: People claim freedom from God because we don't live as we claim to believe. Lord, I've sinned against you in every way. I've surrounded myself with idols and have grown callous to your discipline. I've lived a life 'I can't stop' - a lie. I don't want to live a lie, but to live in Spirit and Truth.

Thank you Father, Lord - you're mercy is made new everyday. Help me follow where you lead, the way you lead. Amen. Thank you for conviction of sin, righteousness, and judgement. Revelation 22:15

Hard to understand, hard to accept: we are interdependent (1 Cor 11:1-16)

Focus verses:
But there is one thing I want you to know: The head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. - 1 Corinthians 11:3 NLT

But among the Lord’s people, women are not independent of men, and men are not independent of women. - 1 Corinthians 11:11 NLT

We see perfect relationship in the Trinity: Authority, unity, deference, respect for authority, submission, role clarity. Jesus is not less than God the father. The Spirit unites us in harmony as we follow Christ together. Authority is good for us, submitting to authority is good for us.

Some truths are timeless, some are timely.  Head covering is a timely example from that time. So the reader would understand...

"Gender ideals"
- Feminism: empower women, diminishing men
- Chauvinist: men empowered, diminishing women
- Complementarism: equal in worth and value, but different roles

Co-Leadership not in back, not in front, but along side Gen 2:22-23. A helper suitable to him.

Gender fluidity? Gender is fixed. Not 58 gender options as in our culture. God is not confused or confusing. Our self hatred is not from God (hatred of roles).

Culture doesn't create sexuality, God did. God hss created complementary pairs for leading. Gender war broke out in Genesis 3, role conflict.
- We take our cues from Scripture not culture. Culture is the blind leading the blind.
- True is true, study the Trinity and the creation account for clarity.
- Say no to feminism and chauvinism and yes to complementarism
- See that husband's and wives need eachother
  - See the blessing of being under authority

Romans 5, Adam is held responsible for all sin. Jesus has granted us authority to give the Gospel of salvation. The power of God for all who believe.

Sex in marriage, husband and wife (1 Cor 7:1-16)

1 Cor 7:1-16
Aim: understand healthy sexuality
1. Sex is a gift from God. He designed our bodies to enjoy sex and all that it gives us in the context of husband and wife.
- we can see what God was thinking of when we consummate our marriage
2. Sex has a context: marriage
- don't be silent, advocate truth
3. A healthy sex life (in marriage) can protect against infidelity and immorality.
- don't argue this point
- Satan wants to destroy our marriage

Sex has multiple purposes
- pleasure
- procreation
- partnership
- picture of intimacy (Christ and Church)

Sex is easy area in life to be selfish.
- sex is serving eachother in love
- not a tool of manipulation

Run from Physical sin (1 Cor 6:13-20)

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20 NLT

Arguments that contradict God's word:
It's legal (God's plan is higher than mans plan)
It's biological (You're not an animal, you're an image bearer) 1 Cor 6:13
- desires are man made
- God changes our desires, comforms us to Christ
It's my body, (It's God's 1 Cor 6:13-14)
- you didn't create it, you steward your body
It only affects me
- 1 Cor 6:15,16 - sex is more than physical
- see family and community impact
- we are never alone, God knows us completely (Psalm 139, 1 Cor 6:19-20)
- we drag Jesus reputation through the mud. We carry his name in vain. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.
1 Corinthians 6:18 NLT

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20

Active rebellion or passive indifference, our accountability regarding sin

When we sin it's not just what we do or don't do, it's in our very nature. Christians believe our sins are covered by the death of Jesus and confirmed in his bodily, historical resurrection. God draws us to himself throughout our lives, via people, His creation, His Spirit, and circumstances. When we repent from sin, turning to God it is through the work of the Holy Spirit in us. We confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts that Jesus is Lord and Savior, committing our lives to follow him. Committing to do what he has commanded us to do.

The following explores sin (Active rebellion or passive indifference) as it relates to God, others, ourselves and our work and finally in our relation to God's Love.

In Relation to God (Repentance means to contrition Psalm 51:4)
 - Foolishness of indifference (Psalm 14:1-3; Psalm 53:1-3; Romans 3:10; Job 15:16)
 - Evil of rebellion (Genesis 6:5,12; Psalm 10:2-11,4)
 - Idolatry (Exodus 20:1-2,3,4,5,6,7)

In Relation to Others (Repentance means reconcilation Matthew 5:23-24)
 - Family (God's desire Luke 15:11-32): Parents (Exodus 20:12), siblings (Genesis 50:20), children (Matthew 18:6-7)
 - Friends: neighbors, community (Ephesians 4:28, 1 John 2:6,10)
 - Strangers (Luke 3:11, Luke 12:42-48,1 Timothy 6:17-19)
 - Enemies (1 Cor 4:12)

In Relation to ourselves (John 15:4-5,6-7,9-10; John 8:31, 1 John 2:17,24,27)
 - Our bodies (1 Cor 6:18-20)
 - Our minds (Psalm 32:1-2,3-4,5,6,7)
 - Our lives (Sabbath for man Mark 2:27, Exodus 20:8-11)

In Relation to our work
 - Foolishness of laziness (Matthew 25:14-30)
 - Evil of theft (Matthew 15:19; Revelation 9:20-21)

In Relation to God's Love
 - Revealed in Jesus Christ (John 3:16-21, Romans 5:6-9,8; 1 John 4:10 )
 - Revealed in Creation (Genesis 2:7;Romans 1:20; 2 Peter 3:5; Hebrews 11:3; Psalm 33:6)

Since Jesus ascended to Heaven some 2017 years ago we have been living in the "Grace Period" that is talked about in Joel. Joel proclaims God's message of judgement, repentance and eternal restoration.

Love is Love, or is it?

In the book Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman, he describes five ways to express and experience love called "love languages". These love languages are universal across cultures and time boundaries and are described as gifts, quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service (devotion) and physical touch (intimacy). What’s not mentioned in the book is that in tennis, love means nothing. Literally when someone has not scored, their score is "love". Love can be confusing, not just the word but all that it conjures in one's mind.
Christians can seem bigoted against the LGBTQ community when it comes to love, however the message I'd like to share with you is love (and not the kind that means nothing).

What's the big deal about Love?
God is Love (1 John 4:16) - His very character is love. Some may think "what do you mean 'His' character..." Well the Bible clearly shows our God is masculine: Father, Son, Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19) and created mankind (Genesis 1:26), Genesis 2:7-8, shows us that the God who by the act of speaking made the heavens and earth did something that surprised the heck out of me when I read it. The Bible shows us that "Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground" and "Lord God planted a garden in Eden". Imagine the Creator God, getting down on the ground to form the man with his hands and planting a garden with his hands and then "there he put the man whom he had formed" (again with his hands). Friends this is a personal, caring deep love that we see God has for mankind since the very beginning.

Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” From the earth God created every living thing, yet God made woman from one of Adam's ribs - and Adam was ecstatic saying, “Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh! Name her Woman for she was made from Man.” This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame.

What's the big deal about sex outside of marriage?
To put it positively:
"Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance... When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things. Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely."  1 Corinthians 13:4-13

These words from 1 Corinthians 13 are the most frequently quoted Bible verses at weddings, waiting till marriage to have sex is patient and kind to your spouse, who has agreed to married you. When we are young we don't see the wisdom in these words, we see things imperfectly and likewise we love people imperfectly. Think of anyone you love and remember how imperfectly you've shown your love for them. So my point is God is Love, we are lower than God and don't fully get it, but God knows me completely and will show me his way is right when I obey him.

Going against society in choosing to wait for marriage is possible, we a handsome rich young man was able to resist the hottest girl in town in Genesis 39:7-10. If you are struggling consider putting to memory and new life verse from one of these Bible Verses regarding temptation

We see things imperfectly because of sin, here's what the Bible teaches about sin

To put it negatively:
Hebrews 13:4; Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. When you have sex outside of marriage, you are defiling the future marriage of that person, even if you end of marrying that person. Sex outside of marriage is adultery and leads to self destruction (Matthew 5:28; Proverbs 6:32).

1 Corinthians 6:18; Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body. What-ever you think about the Bible, this is totally true, just ask Google about venereal disease. 1 Corinthians 6:13 - The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

What's the big deal about marriage between a man and woman only?
But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband (1 Corinthians 7:2).

Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. (Romans 13:13-14)

1 Timothy 1:10 puts sexually immoral those who practice homosexuality in the same category of enslavers, liars, perjurers and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine. In Conclusion: Christians believe in God the Creator of heaven, earth and everything in it. He's character is love, he created man, woman and marriage. We believe God is love and showed us his love by sending Jesus to the cross to die for our sins - paying the price for all the wrongs we have committed in our own bodies and against other people. He has completely paid the price for your sin and mine. Once we've received his grace, forgiveness and healing we know that we are God's children, born again and a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17). He has set us on a new path - one that has intersected between you and me - to tell the whole world of his amazing grace and welcome you into his presents.

Jesus invites you to know him personally in John 14:6,7,12-14 "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!...I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!"
