I acknowledge that I am a follower of Jesus Christ, called out of darkness into His marvelous light. I live as a member of the Church Militant on earth and will one day stand among the Church Triumphant in heaven. I affirm that I am an ambassador of Christ behind enemy lines and that my life is no longer my own but belongs to Him who redeemed me. I commit to live faithfully under the authority of Scripture and the lordship of Jesus Christ in all circumstances, whether in public or private, in peace or in spiritual conflict.

I commit to stand firm in the day of evil, having put on the full armor of God. I will not flee in fear nor advance in pride but will remain steadfast in obedience and trust. I will stand upon the truth of God’s Word even when standing is costly.

I will put on the righteousness that comes from God through faith in Jesus Christ. I will pursue a life of obedience as evidence of my salvation, not as a substitute for it.

I will guard my heart through repentance, confession, and the daily pursuit of holiness. I will not make peace with sin that Christ died to defeat.

I will be prepared at all times to proclaim and defend the Gospel of peace. I will seek to live in peace with others as far as it depends on me and will carry the message of reconciliation to a broken world.

I will take up the shield of faith to extinguish every attack of the enemy. I will trust the promises of God when circumstances challenge my confidence.

I will guard my mind with the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ alone. I will resist false teaching, counterfeit gospels, and every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.

I will renew my mind through Scripture, prayer, and gratitude. I will rest in the finished work of Christ and not in my own performance.

I will not walk alone in the Christian life. I will commit to faithful fellowship with the body of Christ.

Final Affirmation

I enter into this Code of Conduct not in my own strength but by the grace of God. I acknowledge that my ability to live faithfully comes from the Holy Spirit who dwells within me. I commit to continual growth, humble obedience, and steadfast faith until the day I stand with the Church Triumphant in the presence of my Lord.

In Christ, In the Spirit, ready to stand against the devils schemes (Eph1:3,6:10-20, Rev 19,Heb 11:3)

3 Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures. Our lives were full of evil and envy, and we hated each other. 4 But

When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.[a] 6 He generously poured out the Spirit upon us through Jesus Christ our Savior. 7 Because of his grace he made us right in his sight and gave us confidence that we will inherit eternal life. Titus 3:3-7

My friend Kevin Black shared the analogy that I first saw from Nicky Gumbel (Alphausa.org) that explains being"In Christ" is like a piece of paper with your name on it, being placed inside book and it's connection to baptism. Where the book goes you go. In a mystical way, when Christ died, you died, when Christ resurrected, you resurrected. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). The phrase "in Christ" is key. Jesus describes this as "Abiding in me" - John 15. Another friend related this idea as when people are delivered from an evil spirit, but refuse to abide in Christ.

Matthew 12:43-45 (and Luke 11:24) where an unclean spirit, after being cast out of a person, wanders through "waterless" or "arid" places seeking rest, but finds none. The "arid places" are interpreted metaphorically as spiritually dry, empty, or God-forsaken places that provide no true rest for the spirit. This parable is a warning that a person or generation that is delivered from evil but not filled with God's spirit will be more vulnerable to greater evil returning. 

Last night (Oct 16) at Teen Challenge Spiritual emphasis family reunion. We leaned into the full armor of God. The power box with the switch in the off position represents everyone who is currently not "in Christ" - this is core power that makes everything in the house electrified (light, heat, charged, ready). Many have "tried" Christianity and found it doesn't work because they're doing the religious actions without the relationship with Jesus. Like plugging into the wall socket that has no electricity coming from the circuit breaker. The circuit breaker comes on when we agree with God about our sin, guilt and shame and apply the free gift of salvation (SAVIOR) by putting our whole life in God's hands (LORD). Fully trusting in the finished work of Jesus 100% (HOLY). 

The "belt of truth" needs to be fitted around waste, tightened and in working order.

Likewise we can have the light switch "on" but the dimmer set so low that we can't see anything. This is being "in the Spirit" 

2 Corinthians 10:4–5 (NLT)

4 We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. 5 We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

To God’s holy people in Ephesus,[a] the faithful in Christ Jesus:

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Jesus promised in Matthew 7:7, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." James 4:3, adds that you must have the right motives. Here's what it looks like

"For I cried out to him for help,
    praising him as I spoke.
If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
    the Lord would not have listened.
But God did listen!
    He paid attention to my prayer.
Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer

    or withdraw his unfailing love from me. (Psalm 66:17-20)"

These thoughts have been percolating in my heart for weeks now (Nov 4). I was sitting with Russ, Karen, Rich Scherber and Rob Dean, Tom Truszinski gave the message on Eph 6:10-20. I saw that the link between the Spirit of God and his Word bring Salvation to us when we pray (Eph 6:l7-18). Revelation was given to John who was "in the Spirit" worshiping (Rev 1:10). I saw the link between the unseen world of our thoughts and our ability to understand by faith, that can extinguish the arrows of our enemy (Eph 6:16, Heb 11:3). 

The Word of God is Faithful and True, From his mouth came a sharp sword (Rev 19:8-9,10,11,12,15). God knows me deeply and empowers me to live in the truth of his Word. I give myself over to Him as Lord and Savior, the gate. Those who come in through Jesus will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures (John 10:9-21). 

Lord, help me to hold on to your Word and be clear minded and self controlled so that I can pray and not get swept away, but to stand. 

Ephesians 6:10-20 (war clothes)

A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. (By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible. Heb 11:3)

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

And pray for me, too. Ask God to give me the right words so I can boldly explain God’s mysterious plan that the Good News is for Jews and Gentiles alike. I am in chains now, still preaching this message as God’s ambassador. So pray that I will keep on speaking boldly for him, as I should.

Rev 19 (wedding closthes)

After this, I heard what sounded like a vast crowd in heaven shouting,

“Praise the Lord!

    Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.

His judgments are true and just.

    He has punished the great prostitute

who corrupted the earth with her immorality.

    He has avenged the murder of his servants.”

And again their voices rang out:

“Praise the Lord!

    The smoke from that city ascends forever and ever!”

Then the twenty-four elders and the four living beings fell down and worshiped God, who was sitting on the throne. They cried out, “Amen! Praise the Lord!”

And from the throne came a voice that said,

“Praise our God,

    all his servants,

all who fear him,

    from the least to the greatest.”

Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd or the roar of mighty ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder:

“Praise the Lord!

    For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.

Let us be glad and rejoice,

    and let us give honor to him.

For the time has come for the wedding feast of the Lamb,

    and his bride has prepared herself.

She has been given the finest of pure white linen to wear.”

    For the fine linen represents the good deeds of God’s holy people.

And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding feast of the Lamb.” And he added, “These are true words that come from God.”

Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers and sisters who testify about their faith in Jesus. Worship only God. For the essence of prophecy is to give a clear witness for Jesus.”

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, for he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns. A name was written on him that no one understood except himself. He wore a robe dipped in blood, and his title was the Word of God. The armies of heaven, dressed in the finest of pure white linen, followed him on white horses. From his mouth came a sharp sword to strike down the nations. He will rule them with an iron rod. He will release the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty, like juice flowing from a winepress. On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords.

Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, shouting to the vultures flying high in the sky: “Come! Gather together for the great banquet God has prepared. Come and eat the flesh of kings, generals, and strong warriors; of horses and their riders; and of all humanity, both free and slave, small and great.”

Then I saw the beast and the kings of the world and their armies gathered together to fight against the one sitting on the horse and his army. And the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who did mighty miracles on behalf of the beast—miracles that deceived all who had accepted the mark of the beast and who worshiped his statue. Both the beast and his false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. Their entire army was killed by the sharp sword that came from the mouth of the one riding the white horse. And the vultures all gorged themselves on the dead bodies.

Friendship is God's way of loving us through someone else

My friend shared his concern for a new believer in Christ who lives in the muslim world. He and his family is in crisis, and crisis feels out of control and God can seem far away. My immediate response is that we need to bring the situation to the Lord who is able to do more than we can ask or imagine (Eph 3:20), to cast our cares on Him because he cares for us (1 Peter 5:7). To have faith beyond our current world (Heb 11) with eyes on Jesus and God's city (Heb 12).  My life verses when I was new believer was Philippians 4:4-7, with 1 Peter 4:7-11. A life verse is something you meditate on, contemplating it's truth in your life until the peace of God that transcends understanding guards your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. We stand in understanding, instead of fight or flight. 

BSF has taught me the ABC of Urgent Prayer Care. A: Address the situation, B: Bring God in, C: Communicate Hope. I've been enjoying friendships with a deeper understanding of the Gospel of Jesus. John 13:20 listen to Jesus, "whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." Don't call it friendship evangelism, call it "God's way of loving us through someone else."

A) Pray back the situation and what emotions or perspectives are blocking the peace and calm of the Holy Spirit. In the prayercourse.org we call this part, keep it simple, keep it real, keep it going. A friend once told me if after prayer you still feel stress, anxiety, anger or similar emotions, you haven't prayed but only complained to God. This is why we need to go two steps further - Bring God in and Communicate Hope. 

B) In crisis, the key to lasting calm is the control of the Holy Spirit. (Read Romans 8:6: "So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace."). Bring God in. What do they need in a crisis? God’s attributes and an awareness of His presence. I love Romans 8:1-17, what Good News! We belong to Christ Jesus and the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed us from the power of sin. God declared an end to sin's control by Jesus atoning sacrifice on the cross. We give our lives to Christ and no longer dominated by sinful nature but controlled by the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:12 reminds us, we have no obligation to do what our sinful nature urges us to...all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 

C) In crisis, we need a reason to continue. (Read Psalm 31:24). Communicate hope. What truth or promises from God’s Word are needed? Romans 8:15-17, "So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Freedom, liberty in communion with God

Sometimes we need a fresh start, we've been a failure and need to get back in step with the Lord. Sometimes a quick prayer doesn't feel like enough. Hebrews reminds us that God made a special day called "today" - today WHEN you hear his voice don't harden your heart, today is the day of salvation. Warn each other every day, while it is still "today", so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. (Heb 3:13) 

• Before work talk to God and give your ideas to him: “O Lord, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham. (Gen 24:12-14)
• Then Pay attention:  Before he had finished praying... (he witnessed the answer)... “Praise the Lord, the God of my master, Abraham,” he said. “The Lord has shown unfailing love and faithfulness to my master, for he has led me straight to my master’s relatives.” (Gen 24:15-27)
• Acknowledge the Lord to others: “So today when I came to the spring, I prayed this prayer: ‘O Lord, God of my master, Abraham, please give me success on this mission. (Gen 24:42)

Sometimes our prayers are interrupted by thoughts, obsessions, or desires that want to carry us away from the LORD. We need to "be still" and turn the lights on inside our heart, have a moment of reflection, let the word of Christ dwell within ourselves and take Holy Communion. In our hearts we can hold up the shield of faith that extinguish the enemy arrows from the outside, but on the inside of faith is peace. 

• Psalms 11:5 says that “the LORD tests the righteous,” and in Job 23:10, Job says of God, “When he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” Similarly, God told Jeremiah, “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind” (Jeremiah 17:10), and Proverbs 17:3 declares that “the LORD tests hearts.”

Psalm 19

Don't hold on theology of problems, hold onto theology of our solution. Take time with the LORD. 

Psalm 19:13: Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. Keep me safe (from arrogant people/things), also, from willful (presumptuous, flagrant, conspicuously offensive, obviously inconsistent with what is right) sins; don't let them rule (control, dominion) over me. Then I shall be perfect (blameless, without spot) and free (acquitted, declared innocent, cleansed) from the evil of sin (transgression, greatest sin). May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

• But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. / Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:14-15
• If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. / If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. / If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:8-10

Spiritual believers but not followers of Jesus Christ

Reading an analysis of Ephesians this week I'm reminded how easily we can be led astray by false teachers. I know I have loved entertainment that is opposite of what I've learned about God and his will for my life. Yet we see the Lord's mercies are made new everyday. I believe the Holy Spirit is poured out on all people, we can choose to acknowledge God's work like Abel or puff ourselves up like Cain ("didn't we do these great things.."). Jesus paid it all the cross, so there is no bearer between people and God. Have you felt the Spirit of God guiding you? Jesus said "when I send the Holy Spirit he will guide you into all truth. He will remind you of everything I taught." - The gifts and the call of God are irrevocable (Romans 11:29), the only sin left to condemn us is to reject gifts and call of God (Matthew 12:32, Mark 3:29).

Every day we have a choice to make, to accept the gifts and call of God or to rely on our own understanding. This is how Isaiah put it:

The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will...If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God. But watch out, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves by your own fires... - Isaiah 50:4,10-11 (see Jesus life and teaching: Isaiah 48:12-51:23)

Spiritual believers will come to a decision about Christ, but how can we say we've really understood if we haven't followed the prescribed way (Heb 6:4) of Sanctification connects repentance, restoration, and service to God. Today if you hear his voice don't harden your heart - this is the message of Hebrews and Psalms (Psalm 95:8,Hebrews 3:15), let the Word of God do it's work in you (Heb 4:12). 

Discover a relationship with Jesus as Lord and Savior, you'll find following Jesus is the best decision a person can ever make. 

People can be honest with God and ask Him to reveal himself

• But I, O Lord, cry to you; in the morning my prayer comes before you. - Psalm 88:13
• I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words. - Psalm 119:147
• This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. - Psalm 118:24 , Phil 4:4-7
• Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. - Psalm 143:8, Romans 12:1-3

The Lord will reveal his Loving Kindness when we ask him to open our eyes to see Him this morning.

• The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. - Lamentations 3:22-23, Titus 3

What are you preparing in your heart, what are you setting apart for God in heart? What would you like to see God do in your life today? 

• O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. - Psalm 5:3, Romans 12:1-3, Romans 12:6-18

When we come to the Lord in Spirit and Truth we often see how wrong we are, consider how God didn't just forgive you, but He died in your place - so that you can live in Him. Now consider how Jesus rose from the grave and has given us his Holy Spirit to live, and abide. How does this joy change your outlook on your family, community and situation (it's a wonderful life!).

• For his anger is but for a moment, and his favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning. - Psalm 30:5, Hebrews 12, Romans 5
• Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. - Psalm 90:14 
• “Have you commanded the morning since your days began, and caused the dawn to know its place, - Job 38:12
• My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning. - Psalm 130:6 
• But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. - Psalm 59:16
• For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. - Psalm 91:11

One day we will be like Jesus (1 John 3:2). We all love the authority (Luke 9:1-2, Luke 10:19) of being a child of God and ambassador but being like Christ also means humbly submitting to others. I first saw this articulated by Vince Miller in the 9 Attributes of a Man study. 

Jesus submitted to his Father's will (John 6:38) and says if we are his friends we do what he commands us (John 15:14). An attitude of submission comes from a mindset that denies self, embraces missional suffering, and is subordinate in identity.

• submit ourselves to Him (1 Peter 5:6)
• to our supervisors and government (Romans 13:1-7)
• graciously submit to each other (Ephesians 5:21)

Matthew 16:24 - "Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."

Submission by Self Denial, Missional Suffering (Pick up Cross), Put Jesus ahead of me (Slave of Christ).

How can this be done, giving that we naturally don't submit to anyone? This is what the Bible calls dying to self and following Jesus. 3 Simple Ways to Submit to Authority Like Jesus gives this advice:

• Don't be prideful about position, Jesus was the Creator (John 1:3), the embodiment of "Us" (Genesis 1:26). Yet he never used suffering as justification for refusing to submit to authority (1 Peter 2:23).
• Don't claim credit for another vision or idea, Jesus came to do his Father's will (John 6:38).
• Know when and how to question and when to do what your told, "If it is possible" Matthew 26:36-46) - Jesus asks - doesn't tell God always in the posture "not my will, but yours"

Everyone's choice: sacrilege or coram Deo

God's work in my life is harmonious, bringing clarity to my soul

• Last Friday: Bob C at church gave me a shirt to promote men's ministry. "If we believe what we believe TO BE TRUE, how will we live our lives - and if we don't live it out, do we really believe it?"
• During Christmas worship on Sunday as we sang "Gloria, in Excelsis Deo", my friend James asked me to look up coram Deo, he had forgotten it's meaning. 
• On Monday I saw James (beggar with one foot), he remembered my name but I had forgotten his
• Later Monday I met with James C, who surprises me with how "stuck" he is in his thinking.
• Then Tuesday I met with Josh, who I haven't seen in a long time but support his CRU mission at St Thomas. It was great to catch up with him.

The big idea of the Christian life is coram Deo. 

To live all of life coram Deo is to live a life of integrity. It is a life of wholeness that finds its unity and coherency in the majesty of God. A fragmented life is a life of disintegration. It is marked by inconsistency, disharmony, confusion, conflict, contradiction, and chaos. 

The Christian who compartmentalizes his or her life into two sections of the religious and the nonreligious has failed to grasp the big idea. The big idea is that all of life is religious or none of life is religious. To divide life between the religious and the nonreligious is itself a sacrilege (violation or misuse of what is regarded as sacred). 

“The big idea of the Christian life is coram Deo. Coram Deocaptures the essence of the Christian life.” 

This phrase literally refers to something that takes place in the presence of, or before the face of, God. To live coram Deo is to live one’s entire life in the presence of God, under the authority of God, to the glory of God.

So last night my friend Josh was telling me about thefour and how so many Christians feel that they have to work for God or do penance before contributing the kingdom. This reminded of a journey the Lord has traveled with me on, Lord, wash my feet and I got to share my testimony about a recent time I got real with God and he immediately set my path straight. God used this testimony to help Seth flush his drugs down the toilet a few weeks ago.

Application:
Why am I on the fence with drinking alcohol and falling back into old habits of thinking and behavior? It's like God tells me to do something and I say, yeah but God you made me this way... The fact remains God made me for greater things, so why aren't I walking the righteous path. My friend Bob C at church gave me a shirt to promote men's ministry.
