Aaron and Sons become lifelong priests by ordination, following the Lord’s decrees

Aim: God ordains people for his work of redemption in the world
(8:1-9) Priest Ordination:  Sin offering, whole community, washed, dressed (sacred garments: runic, sash around waist, robe, ephod, sash, chest piece, Urim, Thummin inside,  turban gold medallion – badge of holiness (NLT) sacred emblem (NIV) – see Ephesians armor of God
(10-36) Moses did all the offering rituals, Aaron and Sons ate then burned leftovers, stayed at the entrance of Tabernacle for 7 days, commanded by Lord to purify them, make right with him
(9:1-21) Moses instructs, Aaron and Sons perform Sin offering, Burnt offering and Grain offering to purify selves and people before the Lord
(22-24) After that Moses and Aaron tabernacle, blessed people, glory of Lord appeared to whole community, fire blazed from Lord’s presents consumed burnt offering resulting in shouts of joy and face down worship
10:1-7) Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu, short-cut-cheaper fire, disobeyed and fire blazed from Lord’s presents and they died, priest not permitted to mourn, stay at entrance of Tabernacle (Aaron, Eleazar, Ithamar)
(8-20) Priestly conduct: Never drink before Tabernacle, distinguish between sacred/common, clean/unclean, teach decrees of Lord, eat sin/purify/make right people with Lord
Principle: God’s people are called to be holy, discerning teachers and bring others into right relationship with the Lord.
Application: Jesus summarized these laws by saying Love the Lord your God with all heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself, the natural progression of that comes with Jesus last instruction: make disciples teaching them to obey everything I’ve taught you, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Christians are called to the same level of priestly holiness, the difference is the sacrifice was made by God’s son on our behalf and it was perfect, once and for all.
