The Covenant with Levi

The "covenant with Levi" (Mal. 2:4-5, 8) is not a single, formally enacted covenant recorded in one passage it is a composite theological concept drawn across several texts and historical moments. Malachi invokes it as a standard against which the corrupt priests of his day are measured.

For teaching purposes: The Levi Covenant functions in Malachi the way the Davidic covenant functions in the Psalms — as a theological baseline against which failure is measured and restoration is promised.

Its Components

1. Phinehas — the founding act (Numbers 25:10-13) The most concrete anchor. When Phinehas killed the Israelite man and Midianite woman in flagrant sin, God declared:

"I am making my covenant of peace with him... a covenant of a lasting priesthood" (Num. 25:12-13)

This is the only place where God explicitly calls something a "covenant" with a member of the tribe of Levi. Notice Malachi 2:5 echoes this exact language — "life and peace."

2. Sinai selection — Deuteronomy 33:8-11 Moses' blessing of Levi describes the priestly calling in covenantal terms: Levi was tested at Massah, proved faithful at Meribah, and was entrusted with the Urim, the Torah, and the altar. The passage frames this as a divine appointment with defined obligations.

3. The Levitical priesthood at large — Deuteronomy 17:18; Jeremiah 33:21 Jeremiah treats God's covenant with "the Levitical priests" as parallel to the Davidic covenant — equally unbreakable by God's design. This shows the covenant had ongoing dynastic/institutional weight, not just personal application to Phinehas.

What the Covenant Required (Malachi's Portrait — 2:5-7)

Malachi constructs the ideal from the covenant's terms:

Covenant Term	Priestly Obligation
Life	Reverence (yir'ah) — holy fear of God's name
Peace	Integrity (shalom) — uprightness in walk and word
—	True instruction (Torah) on the lips
—	Nothing false in his mouth
—	Walking with God in peace and uprightness
—	Turning many from iniquity

Verse 7 is the covenant's job description in summary: "the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge... for he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty."

How the Priests Violated It (2:8-9)

They inverted every term:

• Turned from the way → should have walked uprightly
• Caused many to stumble → should have turned many from sin
• Violated the covenant of Levi → showing partiality in rulings (Torah)
• Result: God made them despised and humiliated before the people — a precise reversal of the honor they were supposed to reflect

The Theological Weight

The Levi Covenant as Malachi uses it is essentially the theology of priestly mediation: the priest stands between God and the people as a messenger (mal'ak — same root as "Malachi"). He carries God's word down and intercedes upward. The covenant grants dignity and life; it demands holiness, truth, and care for the people's moral wellbeing.

This sets up Malachi's larger argument — corrupt priests corrupt the whole covenant people, which is why chapters 2-3 move from priests → marriages/divorce → justice → tithes → the coming messenger who will purify the sons of Levi (3:3).

Purpose in praise and prayer, illustrated in salt and light (Psalms 34; Matthew 5:12-19)

Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose... purpose is achieved...obey God’s laws and teach them... Matthew 5:17,18-19

Blessings and promises have purpose as salt and light have purpose. 

• Accepting/Receiving/follow-through: 
• Remember God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, theirs in the kingdom of heaven. 
• This progresses through mourning and comfort, humble except inheritance, thirst for righteousness and filled/satisfied, merciful shown mercy, 
• Leads to "born again" faith
• Pure heart sees God, peacemaker children, persecuted for righteousness -> theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 

Reading Blessings of Moses, explained by Jesus (Deuteronomy 28:1-14;Matthew 5:1-19) and enjoying memories of National Day of Prayer, how when we intercede for people we are joining Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father. When I close my eyes I can see heaven, like trees walking - the Lord restores my sight and my soul is filled. I'm blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. Joy comes in the morning. Thank you Lord. 

Psalm 34:1-3) I praise the Lord, time, voice, boast - the helpless take heart, Lord's greatness, exalt his name (oh, magnify the Lord with me, he is worthy to be praised). Matthew 5:12) Be happy, very glad! great reward awaits you in heaven, remember prophets persecuted in the same way. 

• This verse is a reminder of the power of collective worship and the importance of sharing our appreciation and reverence for God with others, as we uplift His name together. 
• This Psalm has been on my heart since Teen Challenge Spiritual emphasis week. "I trust in God, my Savior the One - who will never fail... I sought the Lord and He heard and He answered - that's why I trust Him."
• The world is full of Spiritual believers but not followers of Jesus Christ, yet the Lord is winning people over, restoring hearts, minds, souls, strength when we love God and love one-another. 

Psalm 34:4-7) I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me, freed me from all my fears. Looking to Him for help makes me radiant with joy, the shadow of shame disappears. In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; He saved me from all my troubles. The angel of the LORD is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. 

• Develop a prayerful outlook, Quiet time with the Lords Prayer

Psalm 34:8-10) Taste (salt) and see (light) the Lord is good - joy in refuge, Father/child trust/fear, have all we need, lacking no good thing. Matthew 5:13-15) Salt and Light have purpose

Psalm 34:11-14) children listen, learn to fear the Lord - live a good life, don't speak evil or tell lies, turn away from evil and do good, search for peace and maintain it. Matthew 5:16)- let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

Psalm 34:15-16) Eyes of Lord watch over those who do right, ears open to their cries for help. But the Lord turns against evil doers and erases their memory from the earth.

17 The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.

    He rescues them from all their troubles.

18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;

    he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.

19 The righteous person faces many troubles,

    but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.

20 For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous;

    not one of them is broken!

21 Calamity will surely destroy the wicked,

    and those who hate the righteous will be punished.

22 But the Lord will redeem those who serve him.

    No one who takes refuge in him will be condemned.

A Bond Servant of Christ daily devotion

In a review of Peter shows how born again faith grows up into quality faith (2 Peter 1:1-11), I was drawn to how the apostles introduced themselves as a slave to Christ. This brought me to ask What is a bondservant / bond-servant? What does it look like?

• Abraham (Genesis 26:24; Numbers 12:7), Abraham was confidently looking forward to a city with eternal foundations, a city designed and built by God. Heb 11:10
• Joshua (Joshua 24:29), Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. Heb 4:8
• David (2 Samuel 7:5), So God’s rest is there for people to enter, but those who first heard this good news failed to enter because they disobeyed God. So God set another time for entering his rest, and that time is today. God announced this through David much later in the words already quoted: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” Heb 4:6-7, Psalm 95:7-8
• Isaiah (Isaiah 20:3), But not everyone welcomes the Good News, for Isaiah the prophet said, “Lord, who has believed our message?” (Romans 10:16), And later Isaiah spoke boldly for God, saying, “I was found by people who were not looking for me. I showed myself to those who were not asking for me.” (Romans 10:20)
• Messiah (Isaiah 53:11), And every day, in the Temple and from house to house, they continued to teach and preach this message: “Jesus is the Messiah.” Acts 5:42

Jesus taught about being a faithful servant in Matthew 25:14-30 and Luke 12:41-48. That greatest is “the servant of all” (Mark 9:35).

Getting to know someone overlooked or ignored

Matthew 25:31-46, verse 40: Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’ MSG

18-20 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: 
1) Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life,
2) marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
3) Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you.
I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.”

What does it mean to me?

• God's authority is power, specifically, grace that I can access through faith. Faith not just in the good news of Jesus life, death, and resurrection but in the truth that helping the overlooked person is actually helping God. 
• To train is to direct growth by encouragement, leading, and guidance. Training is also teaching, enlightening, and giving instruction. We are to do this with everyone near and far. It's not about who we are going to see but the person on the way. (reminds me to have a Tasteful, sunny disposition)
• Marking with baptism is a public profession of an inner reality. It's like a birthday, wedding day or graduation day or Passover, it's something to be remembered and celebrated. Baptism should be done by a person who has been a strong part of your faith - not a stranger. Daniel Henderson baptized me and led me in a discipleship program over the course of a year (above and beyond Sunday church). It was more than him though, it was a group of 30 guys, so baptism isn't something we all get to share in, but it's something we all can celebrate together. 
• I love the idea of instructing these overlooked and ignored people in the "practice" of all that Jesus commands. Our faith is more than an intellectual belief it's a way of life.

Treasures to do good, future oriented, experience true life

Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life. 1 Timothy 6:18-19 NLT

• Divide your investments among many places (Ecc 11:2-1)
• Doing good with money, ready to share with others is a good foundation for true life (1 Tim 6:18-19)
• Account for trials with joy, see the value in faith that endures (James 1:2-4)
• Be ready to suffer as Christ did, with real pain - death means sin has ceased (1 Peter 4:1)
• Come to Jesus with weariness, heavy burdens - he gives rest like a yoke, learn to be in step with him, exchange weariness with ease and heavy burdens with light ones (Matt 11:28-30)

Father, today - let your word dwell in me richly. Forgive me for my foolishness, I've not had my ear towards you. I do now, keep me from the influences that work to take me away from your goodness. Amen.

We need to know God, not just know about God

In an article Where is God in All of This?, Bev Moore talks about the benefit of knowing Biblical truths to help get through trials, suffering and the "valleys" of life.  For instance, Peter explains that we experience trials to purify our faith and to prove it genuine (1 Peter 1:3-7) and to not be surprised by suffering but actually rejoice (1 Peter 4:12-13). This is counter-intuitive to anyone who doesn't know God.

When teaching children about who God is, I'll tell them about a strong man, his accomplishments, what I've seen him do, how great he is. This is all good but still very abstract and distant. Then I'll give them the name of my dad, then I'll ask them if they think my dad knows my name too. And if my dad could tell them about me and what would he say? Our God is called Heavenly Father and His son is Jesus Christ. Jesus is fully God and fully man, he was the last sacrifice for all sin, acceptable to God - proven by the resurrection. God has no grand-children and Jesus has no cousins. We are children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ. You can't inherit faith, you must open your heart to God and ask him to come in and give you a new life.

Communicate God's word for a change

Outline around the relationships, not just the Bible, guide people in the power, wisdom and grace of the Holy Spirit working in you. Think: Me, we, God, you, we. Have only one point to make (It's a destination point on the map we're traveling on). Where are we going (map a 2 dimensional route for a 3 dimensional journey)? What's the most direct route? Why are we stopping at this point? Most important connection point is the call for "all aboard" - Introduction should build tension, remind people of a felt need. Why do I need to come in this journey with you?

Answer these questions
- What am I feeling (me), can anyone relate (we), did Jesus have any thoughts about it (God), what about you (you), what we (we).

- What do you need to know, why do you need to know it?
- What do you need to do? Be specific and creative.
- Why should they do it, what's at stake? Imagine what would happen if each one of us...

What can I do to help them remember?
- after a series, give everyone a flower. Watch it die and think about what's more

What do we need in order for God's word to change us?
Information - one thing we need to know
Motivation - why we need to know
Application - what we need to do
Inspiration - what's at stake
Reiteration - make them remember

Communicate God's word for a change. Passion for something new, voice and insights - It's about presentation. Think of a two restaurants, same food, one has been prepared better.

Apologetics is seasoning, the Gospel is the main course. Don't make the chips the focus, it's the main dish.

Signal your turns and slow down. "Hang in, it's gonna feel bumpy but it smooths out ahead." Or we climbed to this peak, let's inspect our parachute before we jump into Romans 8.

38 weekends, use time off to get ahead

Pray, study, understand by living. Be real, be yourself. Speak from your heart not your notes. Tell your story, have conversation, speak as though speaking the very word of God.

For we walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7 ESV)

I love this picture, two people, same situation but different perspective and focus. The blind guy can see the beauty by smell, feeling the sunshine and the breeze - hearing the birds and the bubbling brook. That smell before it rains hard, ionizing the air. Remembering the feel of soft grass on bare feet. What I like about this picture is that both artists are painting a true picture, yet it's clear which one has the better vision.

Reminds me of this scripture from 2 Corinthians 5:1-10. We can have pain in our bodies and long for our lives to improve or we can look forward to our eternal hope and continue in faith. To me, this is looking forward, beyond my life to generations who will benefit from my faithfulness. This lines up perfectly as the writing continues in 2 Cor 5:11-6:13 about the ministry of reconciliation.

"For we walk by faith, not by sight. Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil." - 2 Cor 5:7-10 ESV

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us

God's sovereignty and our hope and faith in Jesus (Psalm 2-4, Matthew 2-4)

Psalm 2 is about the Lord's anointed, the One enthroned in heaven. God's son. This is later quoted in Acts 4:25-26 as believers prayed to God in thanksgiving for his awesome plan (Acts 4:1-37).
Matthew 2 is about Jesus being recognized as the one who has been born king of the Jews and his supernatural protection (Matthew 2:13; Revelation 12:4).

Prayer: God help me to see your plan and do your will even during the struggle against sin in my life. Help me to see your plan even as friends and family struggle to survive and make ends meet. Build our faith, help us to be faithful to you in all things in Jesus name Amen!

Your view of God is the benchmark of your spiritual maturity

Psalm 3 is a lament and praise to God for his protection, provision and deliverance from harm. Matthew 3 is about the call to repentance (Matthew 3:2,8,11) from John the Batist and his witness of Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the Father at once (Matthew 3:16-17). Repentance is the other side of coin of faith. Faith and repentance go together, you can't have one without the other.

Prayer: Lord God, I see you have brought me to a place to see my need for you. You have protected me and shielded me from the disgrace I deserve. Thank you for loving me, for put my feet on solid ground, for providing me with great mentors and helpers along the way. I see your hand in sustaining my life and delivering me from the destructive consequences of my own sins. My sins are against you and I repent of them. I believe wholeheartedly in your grace that enables me to remain faithful. Protect me now Lord, help me to walk faithfully with you. amen.

God helps us handle spiritual trials

In prayer Daniel learns about the Messiah and last days

Live the New Life in Christ

Psalm 4:1 David laments, "Answer me when I call to you, my righteous God. Give me relief from my distress; have mercy on me and hear my prayer." Then immediately hears God reply, "How long will you people turn my glory into shame? How long will you love delusions and seek false gods"

The remedy and prescription for those who feel far from God:

Tremble and do not sin;

    when you are on your beds,

    search your hearts and be silent.

Offer the sacrifices of the righteous

    and trust in the Lord. (Psalm 4:4-5)

Psalm 4 relates to Matthew 4 in that our faith is tested by the will of God just as Jesus was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit to be tested. Jesus answered the devil's temptations with fasting and prayer. The devil tempted him as the "Son of God (3)", Jesus responded in his humanity "Man shall not (4)". The devil said in a way, "be foolish with your life - God's got you (5-6)" but Jesus said, "It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.' (7)."

Psalm 4:2 relates to Matthew 4:8-9, The devil tempts us, taking us to a high mountain and showing us the all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. The promise he never keeps is "worship me and this is yours" - Let's take Jesus advice and say out loud "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’ (10-11).

When Jesus preaches people living in darkness receive light/repentance/faith, a new calling and physical healing (Matthew 4:12-25). 

Prayer: Thank you Jesus for showing the way to humbly in this world and to be silent and still to hear your voice. I love you Lord. Let the life I live be in your power and strength for you glory for ever. I'm sorry for putting you to the test by living foolishly, I repent Lord. Thank you for exposing my darkness with your light. I will not give into temptation but tremble and offer the sacrifices of the righteous, trusting in you and renouncing the devil. In Jesus name. Amen.

Improve Integrity, focus words and actions where the Sprit points

A friend of mine gave me a questionnaire for self assessment, having me prayerfully consider my leadership style against some Christian core values. The ranking system was regarding how "self-focused" I was verses being "self-aware". In this exercised I was glad to see that in the area of integrity I needed help which brought me back to a teaching on integrity that aims to bring words and actions together in the direction the Spirit of God is leading. Integrity occurs when words and actions are match perfectly together, with this definition we can see many examples in our daily lives where this is not true. Jesus said, "let your yes be yes and your no be no. (Matthew 5:27-34; James 5:12)" I found this insightful in that the words where short and binary and could then be followed through with in a meaningful and measurable way.

The mission of every Christian church

Commanded by Jesus, the first church obeyed and every church since has followed that same path or perished. So what was the mission of the first church and how was that mission to be carried out? I found a few scriptures to help understand the mission of every church who believes in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and his promised to return to judge all the living and the dead, to eternal life or eternal punishment. Hope this is helpful for you to remember our mission and stay on task towards that purpose.

Acts 13:47 - Lord gave this command, "I've made you a light to Gentiles to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth"
Psalm 96:3, 1 Chronicles 16:24 - Publish his glorious deeds among the nations.
    Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.
Matthew 24:14 - Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.

Make disciples of Jesus, baptized in the name of God by the Holy Spirit

Luke 24:27 - explain the whole revelation of God about himself and his plan from creation, redemption to consummation
Mark 13:10 - preach the good news
Acts 1:8 receive power with the Holy Spirit on you to be witness of Jesus, telling people about him everywhere
Revelation 14:6 - Proclaim the good news to everyone on earth
