Getting a hunger and thirst for God's Word

I found this teaching from Ray Vander Laan on Biblical Allusion which is a style of teaching where a Rabi would quote a section of scripture knowing the learner would pick up on the section before and after and apply it to the teaching. He explains how Jesus did this in his teaching and we see it in the Apostle letters to the churches. Allusion happens when phrases that immediately bring to mind many attributes of a teaching or speech. Like "I have a dream..." or "Four score and seven years ago..." This is great when you see in your Bible notes around scripture references because you can dig deeper and find out more about the teaching the is being alluded to.

Matthew 11:28-30 "I will give you rest" was an amazing phrase that is mind blowing in what it means

  • Delightful promise of God, about the Present sof God Exodus 33:14, Jesus is saying "I am the Lord who will give you rest"
Jesus said "I'm gentle and humble and you will find rest for your souls", where did he get that? Do you know the scriptures? Read: Deut 18:15; Num 12:3; Jeremiah 6:16

He links Jesus writing in the sand John 8:6 as an allusion to Jer 17:13, where the people would recognize Jer 17:10 before that as well as Jer 17:18 - awesome teaching! (This is wear literal translation (ESV) is better than paraphrase (NLT) - See it side by side here: John 8:1-11; Jer 17:13,10,18
  • Every knowledgable jew will who reads John 8, will immediately say oh, "Jeriemiah
