The Certain Triumph of the Lamb (Rev 17)

"The Lamb will overcome them… and those with Him are called and chosen and faithful." - Revelation 17:14

Victory Belongs to Christ

The outcome of history is settled. Revelation 17:14 states the verdict before the battle: the Lamb will overcome because He already has. The cross and resurrection lock in that victory. Colossians 2:15 shows Christ disarming the powers at Calvary stripping them of authority, leading them in open shame like conquered enemies in a Roman triumph. What looked like defeat was conquest.

Scripture anticipated this for centuries. Psalm 2 shows nations raging while God laughs, because His King is already installed on Zion (v. 6). The laughter of God is not cruelty, it is the settled confidence of absolute sovereignty. Psalm 110:1 is the most-quoted verse in the New Testament and guarantees every enemy will become His footstool (Acts 2:34–35; Hebrews 1:13; 10:12–13). The present tense matters in Hebrews 10:13: Christ is seated, waiting, because the outcome requires no further action on His part. Daniel 7:13–14 confirms the everlasting dominion given to the Son of Man, a kingdom that does not pass to another. Revelation simply unveils what was decreed long before.

  • Isaiah 9:6–7: the government rests on His shoulders, and of the increase of His peace there will be no end. The prophet announces an expanding reign, not a contested one. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish it, the guarantee is God's own passion.
  • John 16:33: "I have overcome the world." The perfect tense is decisive. Jesus speaks this before the cross, treating it as already accomplished. The disciples will have tribulation, but they enter a conflict whose verdict is already in the record books.
  • Genesis 3:15: protoevangelium sets the trajectory from the very beginning. The seed of the woman will crush the serpent's head. The wound to His heel and the crushing of Satan's head are both foretold here, the entire arc of redemption compressed into one verse. Every subsequent promise in Scripture is an elaboration of this first word of gospel.
  • 1 John 3:8: "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil." The incarnation was not merely rescue, it was invasion. Christ entered enemy-occupied territory with a specific mission: demolition.
  • Hebrews 2:14–15:  through death He destroyed the one who had the power of death, and freed those who through fear of death were held in slavery their whole lives. The cross was not where Satan won; it was where Satan was undone.

The End Already Decided

Revelation 17 reveals a sovereign God who even directs His enemies. Verse 17 explains the paradox, "God has put it into their hearts to carry out His purpose." The beast and its allies act freely. They intend nothing but rebellion. Yet their rebellion still fulfills God's purpose. History bends toward His decree, not despite the freedom of its actors, but somehow through it.

This is the consistent pattern. Isaiah 46:9–10 declares the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things not yet done. God is not watching history to see how it resolves, He announced the resolution before history began. Ephesians 1:11 says He works all things according to the counsel of His will. The Greek boulē here is deliberate, settled intention, not reactive management. Proverbs 19:21 reduces the equation to its simplest form: many plans exist, but only the Lord's purpose stands.

Romans 8:28 is the pastoral application. The same sovereignty that governs empires governs the details of our lives. The "all things" of Romans 8 and Ephesians 1 refer to the same sovereign hand, operating at every scale simultaneously.

  • Genesis 50:20: human evil bends toward God's good purposes. What Joseph's brothers meant for destruction, God meant for salvation. This is the theological hinge of the Joseph narrative and a template for understanding all providential reversal. Evil does not frustrate God's plan, it becomes the instrument of it.
  • Psalm 33:10–11: the Lord frustrates the plans of the nations and brings the counsel of peoples to nothing, but the counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. The contrast is absolute: human schemes, however powerful, are temporary. God's counsel is permanent.
  • Proverbs 21:1: the king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He will. Even the most powerful human authority operates within sovereign constraint. This is not tyranny over human freedom, it is the quiet governance that ensures history arrives where God intends.
  • Isaiah 10:5–7, 15: God calls Assyria "the rod of my anger," used to punish Israel, yet Assyria intends no such thing and serves no such purpose consciously. The axe does not direct the one who swings it. Instruments of judgment remain instruments, no matter how powerful they appear.
  • Acts 4:27–28: Herod and Pilate and the nations gathered against Jesus "to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place." The crucifixion, the worst crime in history, is simultaneously the most precisely planned event in eternity. The worst human act and the greatest divine act are the same moment. Sovereignty does not merely permit evil; it overrules it toward redemption.
  • Job 42:2: "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted." Job arrives at this confession through suffering, not despite it. The theological knowledge becomes doxological only through the furnace, which is itself part of the sovereignty being confessed.

The Church Moves from Militant to Triumphant

The church now is the ecclesia militans, armed for real conflict (Ephesians 6:10–18). We wrestle against principalities and powers, against cosmic forces of darkness. Paul does not say "understand" or "study", he says wrestle, the most intimate and exhausting form of combat. Scripture never softens that reality.

But the war ends in glory. Revelation 19:7–8 shows the Bride ready for the wedding. The fine linen, bright and pure, is identified as the righteous deeds of the saints, but they are given to her to wear. Even her righteousness is His gift. The church becomes triumphant because her Husband has already won.

Hebrews 12:1–2 holds both realities together. The triumphant surround the militant. The great cloud of witnesses who have finished the race are not absent from the story, they encircle it. One body, running one race, at different points in the same narrative, bound together in a solidarity that death does not dissolve.

Jude 24–25 promises the final outcome. God will present His people blameless before His glorious presence with great joy and the joy is His, not merely ours. 1 Corinthians 15:54–57 says death itself will be swallowed by the Lamb's victory: "O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" Paul quotes this as future fact, then breaks into present-tense thanksgiving. "thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

  • Matthew 16:18: the gates of hell will not prevail against Christ's church. Gates are defensive, not offensive. Hell is the one on defense; the church is the advancing force. The assault runs from the church toward the stronghold, not the other way around.
  • Romans 8:37: "in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." The phrase hypernikōmen: "more than conquerors" suggests not merely winning but winning with surplus. Overwhelming victory, not narrow escape.
  • Zechariah 4:6: "Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts." The ecclesia militans fights, but the weapons and the power are not its own. The battle belongs to the Lord, and He lends His people His arm.
  • 2 Corinthians 2:14: "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession." The Roman triumph metaphor is striking: Paul sees the church not as soldiers marching to uncertain battle but as captives already being led in a victor's parade, behind the One who has already won, spreading the fragrance of that victory everywhere.
  • 2 Corinthians 10:3–4: "Though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds." The militancy of the church is real, but its arms are categorically different from worldly power.
  • Philippians 1:6: "He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." The militant church is not left to sustain itself to the finish line. The same God who began the work will complete it. The guarantee of the triumphant church is rooted in the faithfulness of God, not the endurance of the church alone.
  • Revelation 12:11: "And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death." The weapons of the militant church in its darkest hour are not force but fidelity, the blood already shed, the word faithfully spoken, the life willingly offered. This is what conquest looks like in the kingdom of the Lamb.

Why This Matters Now

Christ's triumph reframes the church's courage. We do not fight for victory. We fight from victory. Those who are "called and chosen and faithful" (Revelation 17:14) endure because the Lamb has already secured the end. The calling grounds the election; the election grounds the faithfulness. None of the three is self-generated, all three flow from the Lamb who overcomes.

This is why the believer can face an uncertain future with settled confidence, not because the path is clear, but because the destination is fixed. The same God who declared the end from the beginning has also declared us His, and nothing in creation will separate us from that love (Romans 8:38–39). The story is already written. We are simply living toward its last page.

Limitless Forgiveness (Matthew 18:21-22)

Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven! - Matthew 18:21-22

Jesus teaches that forgiveness has no cap. Peter wanted a rule. Jesus wanted a heart. Forgive without keeping score.

Why it matters

  • True forgiveness reflects God’s character (Matthew 18:35).

  • God forgave us at infinite cost, so we forgive freely (Ephesians 4:32; Colossians 3:13).

  • Unforgiveness traps us emotionally. It becomes a prison.

  • A forgiven heart releases grudges and restores peace (Romans 5:1).

What Jesus meant

  • “Seventy times seven” is not a math problem. It is a mindset.

  • Forgiveness is an attitude before it is an action.

  • When your heart is surrendered, you can forgive the eighth time as easily as the first.

  • Nothing justifies clinging to an unforgiving spirit.

Broader Biblical reinforcement

  • God forgives lavishly and repeatedly (Psalm 103:8–12).

  • Love “keeps no record of wrongs” (1 Corinthians 13:5).

  • We are called to restore gently, not retaliate (Galatians 6:1).

  • Mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13).

  • Bear with each other and forgive as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13).

  • If we do not forgive others, we block our own freedom (Matthew 6:14–15).

Spirit of the teaching
Forgiveness restores wholeness. It repairs relationships. It mirrors the grace God pours into us. A heart ready to forgive is a heart aligned with the Kingdom.

Reflection prompt
Who needs forgiveness from you today? What freedom would it create in your soul if you released the record of wrongs?

Closing quote
“He who cannot forgive breaks the bridge over which he himself must pass.” —George Herbert

Eating with people means we accept them.

"To “eat with the Gentiles” meant to accept them, to put Jews and Gentiles on the same level as one family in Christ." - Warren Weirsbe, Be Free (Galatians)

1. PETER’S RELAPSE (2:11–13) Apparently, sometime after the important conference described in Acts 15, Peter came from Jerusalem to Antioch. The first thing to note is Peter’s freedom then. He enjoyed fellowship with all the believers, Jews and Gentiles alike. To “eat with the Gentiles” meant to accept them, to put Jews and Gentiles on the same level as one family in Christ. Raised as an orthodox Jew, Peter had a difficult time learning this lesson. Jesus had taught it while He was with Peter before the crucifixion (Matt. 15:1–20). The Holy Spirit had reemphasized it when He sent Peter to the home of Cornelius, the Roman centurion (Acts 10). Furthermore, the truth had been accepted and approved by the conference of leaders at Jerusalem (Acts 15). Peter had been one of the key witnesses at that time.

Scriptures encourage us because we have free will (John 16:1,Matthew 14:33)

John 16:1, "I have told you these things so that you won’t abandon your faith."

Troubles in life can stretch us but God's word encourages us. When the disciples have first-hand experience with Jesus feeding the five thousand and walking on water they worship him 'Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”' - Matthew 14:33

God's will and our free will = relationship

If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority. - John 7:17

But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. - John 1:12-13

Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. - Revelation 3:20

Our heart, words, and actions matter

Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. - James 1:13-16

Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. - Romans 10:9-10

But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. - Galatians 5:16-17

Finding the freedom, promised by Jesus (2 Cor 3:16-18)

Talking with my dad yesterday about evangelism, handing out Bibles, and sharing the gospel. I thought about how odb.org is such a great resource and it's free. They also have high-quality videos on youtube as well. Instruments of Peace. I get a quarterly pack our daily bread and give them out at MNTC along with the Why Jesus? booklet during alpha.

2 Cor 3:17

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Cor 3:16-18

 - The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; - Isaiah 61:1

 - And the book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the book and found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me ,  Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.  He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,  And recovery of sight to the blind,  To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord ." - Luke 4:18‭-‬19 NASB

Jesus Christ exposes Satan, sin, and a right relationship with God (Luke 11:23-12:21)

 Key verses:

“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me. Luke 11:23

Jesus replied, “But even more blessed are all who hear the word of God and put it into practice.” Luke 11:28

“What sorrow awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden...For you remove the key to knowledge from the people. You don’t enter the Kingdom yourselves, and you prevent others from entering.” Luke 11:46,52

The time is coming when everything that is covered up will be revealed, and all that is secret will be made known to all.  Luke 12:2

“Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a (rich relationship with God/rich toward God.).” Luke 12:21

Jesus heals and teaches about demons and our choices (Luke 11:23-36)

Jesus has a meal with Pharisees, teaches how greed, self-deception and hypocrisy ruin lives (Luke 11:37-12:3)

Jesus teaches how our relationship with God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) is essential (Luke 12:4-21

Intriguing variation in human experience, to choose or not to choose?

"choose" shows up 111 in the Bible. I was thinking about God's role in giving us Eyes that see, ears that hear and heart that understands and then read Many People Have a Vivid ‘Mind’s Eye,’ While Others Have None at All. One thing is for sure that God can and does give people a new perspective.

God chooses mercy and compassion

  • The Lord replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you. For I will show mercy to anyone I choose, and I will show compassion to anyone I choose. - Exodus 33:19

God wants us to ask him for mercy and compassion, Matthew 9:38

  • When He (Jesus) saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. - Matt 9:36-38, Luke 10:2

Prayer empowers (Luke 6:12,13) and word (2 Thessalonians 3:1) for miraculous discernment (Acts 13:2) and service (Matthew 10:1)

Many choose hell (1) but you can choose to obey God (2)

  1. “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. - Matthew 7:13
  2. Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living. Romans 6:16

Faith comes by hearing The good news of Jesus Christ and it's impact on everyone (Romans)

Cultivating a negative attitude toward the will of God is the first step toward disappointment and defeat

I love Warren Wiersbe, in the book "This is the Life" he writes how Christians fall into worldliness:

"Most Christians don’t suddenly dive into worldliness; instead, they gradually drift back into the old lifestyle and sometimes don’t even know what’s happening. They first get friendly with the world (James 4:4) and then little by little begin to be “spotted” (defiled) here and there by the world (1:27). If they don’t repent and return to the Lord, they start loving the world (1 John 2:15) and becoming conformed to the world (Rom. 12:2).

Compromisers don’t take seriously God’s words of warning in Scripture or His chastening (Heb. 12:1–11), and the day comes when they find themselves condemned with the world (1 Cor. 11:32). Scripture records the tragic endings of believers who were “saved, yet so as through fire” (1 Cor. 3:13–15). Lot and his family come to mind (Gen. 13:11–13; 19:1–29; 2 Pet. 2:7–8), and so does the family of Korah (Num. 16), along with Samson (Judg. 13–15), Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5), and Demas (2 Tim. 4:10). "

He goes on... "Cultivating a negative attitude toward the will of God is the first step toward disappointment and defeat. God’s will is not chains (Ps. 2:3) but cords of love (Hos. 11:4). His will is not a bit and bridle (Ps. 32:8–9) but the secret of joyful freedom. “And I will walk at liberty, for I seek your precepts” (119:45). God wants us to know His will (Acts 22:14), obey His will from the heart (Eph. 6:6), understand His will (5:17), and delight in His will (Ps. 40:8). God’s will is not a buffet dinner where we choose only what pleases us. His will is a rich and nutritious meal prepared especially for us, and we must accept all of it. “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to finish His work,” said Jesus (John 4:34). God’s will is not punishment but nourishment. The will of God is the expression of the love of God to each of His children, the invitation to a rich and fruitful life. “The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations” (Ps. 33:11). His will comes from His heart.

Personal Responsibility for our lives, judged in the presence of Christ

Reading Glorious Finish: Keeping Your Eye on the Prize of Eternity in a Time of Pastoral Failings

What will judgment day look like, when will it happen, what will it consist off? The answers to these questions will help us find out if our lives are in alignment to finish well or not. The big ideas that impacted me:
A) Daily activity matters in time and eternity. Deny yourself (flesh, be worthy Matthew 10:38), take up your cross daily (world, build to finish, fight to win; Luke 14:25-35), follow Jesus (not the devil). Matthew 16:24-27
Don't excuse yourself or wait for a future time, do it when asked. Luke 14:15-24
Commandments of Jesus

Matthew 16:27,  "For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done."

B) Our physical life impacts our spiritual life.
2 Cor 5:10,  "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body (physical life), whether good or bad."

C) We are personally accountable to God
Romans 14:12, "So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God."
Accepting others differences means abstaining from our freedoms (Romans 14)
     - Judgment of Believers and Unbelievers

D) Heart motivation is known only by the individual, God, and brought to light by wise people.
1 Cor 4:5, "Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God."
 - For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey. Romans 2:13 (God's righteousness can be applied to our hearts through repentance (Romans 2)
 - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22
 - But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:25
 - The Spirit of God reveals sin, righteousness, and judgement

Obeying God's will from inward compulsion not outward constraint (James 1:25)

“But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” - James 1:25

Memorial Day, I'm reminded of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice in preserving our liberty as a country. I'm grateful for the inward compulsion we have and the difference it means in living out our purpose. If I get a passing grade on my exams for AWS Big Data Certification, I'll treat myself to watching my favorite war movie, Hacksaw Ridge.

Yesterday I learned from Judy Ho there are two Greek words for pleasure, hedonic and eudemonic.

  • The root word hedonic comes from the Greek word for “sweet”, which means relating to or characterized by pleasure. ... For example, hedonic goods are bought so that the consumer may gain pleasure and enjoyment from the good, and value experiences are also viewed as hedonic experiences.
  • Eudemonic well-being refers to the subjective experiences associated with eudaimonia or living a life of virtue in pursuit of human excellence. The phenomenological experiences derived from such living include self-actualization, personal expressiveness, and vitality. This is where udemy.com got it's name.

In BeMature Wiersbe contrasts liberty with license. When we obey God's law, it frees us from sin and enables us to walk in liberty (Ps 119:45). Also, the law prepares us for liberty:
Now before faith came, we were kept in custody under the Law, [perpetually] imprisoned [in preparation] for the faith that was destined to be revealed, with the result that the Law has become our tutor and our disciplinarian to guide us to Christ, so that we may be justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing with God] by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under [the control and authority of] a tutor and disciplinarian. For you [who are born-again have been reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified and] are all children of God [set apart for His purpose with full rights and privileges] through faith in Christ Jesus. - Galatians 3:23-26 (AMP)

License means you do whatever you want (Hedonic) and is the worst kind of bondage (Romans 1:28,29,30,31,32). See, Diagnostics of a depraved psychology and consequences (Romans 1:18-32). Retaining the knowledge of God is as daily as eating and drinking.

Liberty is fulfillment (Eudemonic). Wiersbe says, "It's called the law of liberty because God sees our hearts and knows what we would have done had we been free to do so. The Christian student who obeys only because the school has rules is not really maturing...God's Word can change our hearts and give us the desire to do God's Will, so that we obey from inward compulsion and not outward constraint."

As with ABC of CBT, our beliefs drive our behavior. If we really believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and that God is gracious, His Word is true, and one day He will judge us, then our conduct will reveal our convictions. I've found when I walk with God into the unknown, fully trusting in Him I experience wonderful things. The past two years have been wonderful starting with this study Joshua wastes no time living into God's promises

God gives us freedom to choose light or darkness and our future

At the Bible Museum in Washington DC with my mom, wife, and father in law - they asked provocative questions that sparked great conversation. One was Is freedom of religion a biblical concept?

God respects our choices in that He gives us the freedom to make decisions regarding our future (Genesis 13:8-12; Joshua 24:15)

From Bible study without prayer is light without heat I like this section:
Believers frozen in wickedness
Jesus said, "Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold" Matthew 24:12 NIV. The love Jesus is talking about is Agape Love, God's love - the Churches love and that it will grow COLD for MOST. And the love of most grows cold because of increase of WICKEDNESS.

What is wickedness? The verses before tells us Matthew 24:10-11
At that time many will fall away and will betray and hate one another, and many false prophets will arise and mislead many.
 - In the old days, people would gather to hear prophets, today we turn on the t.v. or the radio or internet media.
 - To fall away is to have at one time believed God, then by listening (or being led) to another, you go another way, resulting in betrayal and hating one another.

Matthew 24:13
But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved.

(John 1:4-5) In him, life, Light of mankind, The Light shines in the darkness that hasn't understood, overcome, overpower, or appropriate or absorb it. UNRECEPTIVE to it

  • John 3:19-21; 8:12; 12:46; 1 John 1:5-6
  • Examples adoption is light, abortion is darkness, light is the ability to excel at our highest level - the darkness of drugs (feel big while getting smaller)

Language reveals truth that saves lives (sets prisoners free to live righteously) - Luke 4:18

Isaiah 61:1-3;Luke 4:16-21; 2 Cor 1:1-11; 1 Peter 4:19
Jesus came proclaiming liberty, recovery our sight, and granting us freedom. While we suffering greatly we are comforted greatly. Our affliction is for the comfort and salvation of YOU - we don't hide this truth from you - we've despaired even of living another day, and know our time is short. Yet we've trusted in God who raises the dead and he delivered us here and now and will in the future. Jesus taught us to pray and prayer is something we can do right now to receive God's help in our time of need.

Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. - 1 Peter 4:19

Luke 4:18 has some words that aren't in Isaiah 61:1, "recovery of sight to the blind" is nestled in between "To proclaim liberty to captives" and "And freedom to prisoners;"
 - Reminds me of being blind in a dark cold cave. Recovery of sight, description of sunlight, the warmth, and pointing the way out is how freedom is given to prisoners.
 - I was studying "History of color" from great courses. Recovery of sight has to do with language and definition. In cultures that don't have a word for "blue" when asked to draw the sky, they'll use black crayon even while the blue crayon is present.
 - 1 John 3:2 explains sight restoration: "Jesus Christ...we will see him as he really is."
 - Restoring sight to the blind is a huge theme in scriptures: (Matt 11:4-5 (NIV), Isaiah 35:5 (NIV), Isaiah 29:18 (NIV), Isaiah 42:6-7 (NIV), Isaiah 42:16 (NIV),  Psalm 146:8 (NIV),  Isaiah 6:9-10 (NIV),  Isaiah 42:18-20 (NIV),  Isaiah 44:9 (NIV), Isaiah 56:10 (NIV), Isaiah 59:9-10 (NIV)
 - Blessed will see God (Matt 5)

Isaiah 61:3
When we have clear vision, understanding it's a grant or gift, it's physically life-changing. Like oil is physical but gladness is an abstract idea. A mantle of praise is clothing ourselves in praise instead of a "spirit of fainting". All this results in being called "oak of righteousness" the "planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified". In a previous study I saw new context around this scripture:

Lord God is "clothed" in righteousness, bringing justice and salvation for his own

  • Isaiah 59:17; The Lord put on righteousness as his armor, wore the helmet of salvation and clothed himself with robe of vengeance and wrapped himself in a cloak of divine passion (to bring justice)
  • Isaiah 61:10; Overwhelming joy in the Lord God! He dressed me with clothing of salvation and a robe of righteousness
  • Isaiah 63:1-3 The Lord's clothing stained red, announcing your salvation - the Lord has power to save! (Revelation 19:13)

All sin is first against God, only God can make it right and change us

From Bsfinternational.org notes (https://resc.mybsf.org/PPL1_AdNotes_14_062018.pdf)
All sin is first against God. Saul confessed his wrong toward David but never acknowledged his rebellion against God.42 Saul’s life kept moving away from God. As believers struggle with sin, their lives ultimately move Christward.43 When the struggle is hard, remember: God has committed Himself to making each of His children like Jesus.44 If God is your Father,45 He will bring you safe to heaven.46 Ask Him for courage to allow His Word and Spirit to examine47 and change you.48
41: Confession: Psalm 51:1-10, 17
42: Saul’s rebellion: 1 Samuel 15:22-30
43: Believers’ struggle: Psalms 32; 41:4; 51; Romans 7:1-8:17; 1 John 1:5-9
44: Like Jesus: Romans 8:29; 1 John 3:1-3
45: God’s children: Matthew 6; John 1:12-13; 1 John 2:15-16,23-24
46: Eternal security: John10:27-30; Philippians 1:6;1 Thessalonians 5:24
47: Sin exposed: Psalms 19:7-11;139:23-24; John 16:8
48: Transformed: Romans 12:1-2;Philippians 2:12-13

God's promises and sovereign will, seen in our lives (Romans 9:1-19)

Romans 9:1-29

AIM: Understand your choice within God's sovereign wrath and mercy

1) Speak truth in Christ, conscience confirmed by Holy Spirit
2-3) sorrow in heart, wishing self-cursed rather than kinsman Israel
  • 4-5) adoption to sonship, divine glory, covenants (law, temple, promises),
  • patriarchs to Messiah (Matthew, Luke trace lineage)
  • Messiah is God (John 1:1, Colossians 2:9)
6-9) God's word didn't fail, Abraham/Sarah, Israel's descendants are reckoned (Gen 21:12), not from birth but from promise (Romans 8:14, Galatians 3:16)
10-13) Rebekah/Isaac, twins, God's purpose, election (not works but him who calls) Jacob loved Esau hated (Mal 1:2,3)
14-15) Is God unjust? No, he says to Moses: mercy and compassion is God's sovereign choice (Ex 33:19)

  • Yet our lives and decisions are part of this "choice". Jer 18:7-10, God announces people will be destruction or blessing but then if those people change for either good or bad - the Lord will not do as he said. Jonah 3:10 and Jeremiah 26:3 are also helpful to think about how God's sovereign choice interacts with our choice.

16) No human desire or effort but God's mercy

  • Remember Romans 8:28, Genesis 50:20, truth is same on the flip side of the Sovereignty coin

17) Pharaoh displayed God's power, God's name proclaimed in all the earth (Exodus 9:16,17, 14:4)

  • Judgement, salvation to all humble, yet a remnant of wrath (Psalm 76:9-10)
  • Think of Shadrach, Meshach, and Adeb-nego. By Nebuchadnezzar's wrath, God's glory was shown and proclaimed throughout the land (Daniel 3:15-27,28,29-30)

18) God mercy whom he wants, hardens whom he wants

19) Why does God still blame us? Who is able to resist his will?

  • 20-24) Who are humans to talk back to the Creator, we are his work, for His purpose and glory
  • Search scriptures like Paul to let the Holy Spirit reveal the mystery for you
  •  - mouthing off to God: Job 1:22,9:12,40:2 linked to clay/potter Isaiah 45:9
  •  - clay and potter: Isaiah 29:16, 64:8, Jer 18:6 links to movement/ability Isaiah 10:15
  •  Recurring theme in Paul's life: 2 Tim 2:20, gold/silver, wood/clay - common verses special use
  • See God's kindness and forbearance/patients (Romans 2;4), The Lord works out everything to its proper end - even the wicked for a day of disaster (Proverbs 16:4)
25-29) Principle: Scripture interprets scripture. Application: How can you know how to live as God's loved, adopted children? Ho does obeying what you know, fulfill your God-given purpose? Where are you resisting God's will in your seeing, hearing, and understanding - when will you repent of this resistence?

Humbly Grateful Or Grumbly Hateful?

THeard this wonderful song today, great intro to Exodus 16, the teaching...
Do you grumble and groan,
Or let it be known
You’re grateful for all God’s done for you?
Good article here:
http://carynchristensen.com/2015/11/02/are-you-humbly-grateful-or-grumbly-hateful/

Folks were hungry and complaining about Moses and Aaron, God spoke to Moses (not them)..

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Look, I’m going to rain down food from heaven for you. Each day the people can go out and pick up as much food as they need for that day. I will test them in this to see whether or not they will follow my instructions. (walk in my law or not. ESV)
Exodus 16:4 NLT

Sounds familiar,  Gen 2-3

We too grumble, we ask God to bless us, then complain about the blessings

So we are instructed.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:6 NIV

Give us today our daily bread.
Matthew 6:11 NIV

Am I trusting God every day, (not just the big things)?
- God gives us what we need everyday.

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.  But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Matthew 6:19‭-‬21 NIV

God is powerful and personal
He uses basic human needs, to show how to be satisfied in him

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  ...Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life  ?
Matthew 6:25‭, 27

What life is all about? It's not about getting ahead, it's about resting in him. Manna and Sabbath = God is able too meet all our needs.

So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord . You will not find any of it on the ground today. Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.”  Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? Bear in mind that the Lord has given you the Sabbath; that is why on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Everyone is to stay where they are on the seventh day; no one is to go out.” So the people rested on the seventh day.
Exodus 16:24‭-‬30 NIV

He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord .
Deuteronomy 8:3 NIV

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”  Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’  ”
Matthew 4:3‭-‬4 NIV

My ultimate need is to know God.

Crowds don't understand Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:22-40)
Jesus the Bread from Heaven, offered to all offensive to most (John 6:41-71)
Jesus teaches about Living Water at Festival of Tabernacles (John 7:1-52)

God provides and delivers
- you can't take it with you, use what you have today for today's needs.

Don't make the daily needs the pursuit of your life

Lamentations 3 show a man in pain, suffering and confusion. Yet he says...

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. "The Lord is my portion," says my soul, "therefore I will hope in him."
Lamentations 3:22‭-‬24 ESV

Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness,
Hebrews 3:7‭-‬8 ESV

Whoever is wise, consider the steadfast love of the Lord (Psalm 107:43)

Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the Lord .
Psalms 107:43 ESV

He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and burst their bonds apart. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! Some were fools through their sinful ways, and because of their iniquities suffered affliction; they loathed any kind of food, and they drew near to the gates of death. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He sent out his word and healed them, and delivered them from their destruction. Let them thank the Lord for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!
Psalms 107:14‭-‬15‭, ‬17‭-‬21 ESV
