God's word provide truth that corrects the lies we've believed

I had the opportunity to be a BSF children's leader for several years. One training was to show the difference between what the world says and what God says. My favorite example is what cures a thief? the world says punish them in jail - do the crime, do the time. But the bible says, "...do not give the devil a foothold. He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing good with his own hands, that he may have something to share with the one in need. Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen..." Eph 4:27-29

I just discovered I missed this in my studies last year as I was doing User Acceptance Testing for BSFOnline.org

Truth

Lie

God is beyond comprehension (Genesis 1:1)

God is incomprehensible. Even though we cannot comprehend the mechanisms by which God created everything, we can understand God’s nature through His creation. Rejecting Him as Creator is the same as rejecting Him as God. A man who depends on God and not himself can live with assurance, confidence, and peace, knowing that God’s purposes will be served through his life.

Men are to master their universe

Our world tells men to be “masters of their own universe.” To get ahead in life, we are taught to take control, be self-reliant and work hard to realize our dreams. As men, we often reject what we do not understand.

God speaks through His creation (Genesis 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25)

God speaks to all men through His creation. His creation is good and recognizing God’s hand in the beauty of the world inspires gratitude to the Creator of all. Seeking to see God in creation helps us keep a high view of God.

Man must be true to himself

Many men have been taught to look within themselves for wisdom and truth. They journey all over the world, seek all kinds of adventures, and try all kinds of activities to find themselves. A man who misses God as His Creator will never find himself in any pursuit and can end up disappointed with life

God’s love is demonstrated through His Word (Genesis 1:3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24, 26)

God’s powerful spoken Word brought shape and life to the world. His words created a world that demonstrates His love for us in its beauty and complexity! A man whose identity is rooted in Jesus’ love for him uses his words to intentionally build, comfort, and enrich others.

“I just say what needs to be said”

Words can be used to give or take life, to build up or tear down, to inspire others, or to justify our actions. A man who speaks without thinking can destroy others and barely even notice. Words are spoken without love, even those that “need to be said” can be immensely harmful

God created differences in His creation (Genesis 1:9, 11, 24)

Diversity is an integral part of God’s creation. Examples include light and dark, sky and earth, water and dry land, time (each minute is different than other minutes), unique creatures that reproduce “according to their kind.” Seeing God’s hand in intentional differences helps us appreciate and embrace them in all areas of life.

Men use differences to divide

As men, we often see our life circumstances only from our own point of view. Life can be a quest to bring others into alignment with us. Differences are often used to divide and separate instead of to unite and celebrate.

Spiritual prosperity fulfills God's promise (Genesis 50:20)

“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” – Genesis 50:20

Spiritual gifts; prophecy, faith, wisdom. Notes talk about the importance of knowing how God steadies our past, present, and future through prophecy - else we become "rudderless." With the gift, we must be wise in the words we speak to one another. (James 3:4,1-11)

Prosperity – Genesis 49:11-12

"Judah’s portion in the promised land was the fertile south where grapes grew in abundance. God’s prophecy of vines and donkeys symbolizes land overflowing with prosperity. The Lord Jesus Christ identified Himself as the true vine. To know Jesus is to experience true, spiritual prosperity." - BSF Genesis Lesson 29

"Why does a prophecy about a list of ancient people matter to you? To discount or ignore biblical prophecy is to fail to grasp the firm hand of God that steadies human history. The future can feel like the most uncertain part of life. Without knowing that God has a plan for the past, present and future, life feels random and rudderless. Without a God who speaks about and controls the future, you are left to figure it out on your own." - BSF Genesis Lesson 29

Spiritual prosperity is attitude, disposition, inclinations, and desires that are righteous, noble, and honorable to God. It is the fruit of Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) that is produced in abundance and shows up as kindness and forgiveness when the believer is unjustly treated.

  • Make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in God’s name. Teach them to obey all these commands (John 14:15) with an attitude of love for Jesus. - Matthew 28:19-20
  • Love your enemies, do good to them, with compassion - lend without expecting to be repaid, act as children of the Most High – he is kind to the unthankful and wicked. - Luke 6: 35-36
  • Have compassion on people who despise you, even at great cost and inconvenience. - Luke 10:30-35
  • Feed the hungry, give water to thirsty, give clothing to naked, care for the sick, visit the imprisoned - Matthew 25:34-36
  • Commandments of Jesus

Death fulfills a promise of God (Genesis 2:17)

Just wrapping up my BSF study of Genesis where we see the beginning, yet through the family is never-ending and relational. Our lives and choices make a difference and matter to God. God creates everything , Father of humanity - a never-ending relationship (Genesis)

In our lesson 12.a) asks, What does scripture reveal about death? John 5:24; 8:24; Romans 6:23; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Hebrews 9:27

...whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life... I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins - John 5:24; 8:24

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord -  Romans 6:23

...in death...do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words. - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment - Hebrews 9:27

Joseph's economic policy restores the people, Israel blesses his family (Gen 47:13-48:22)

Reading Be Authentic (Gen 25-50)

In salvation history, the conception and birth of children is a divinely ordained event that has significant consequences. This was true of the birth of Isaac (Gen 18, 21), the twelve sons (Gen 29:30-30:24), Moses (Ex 1-2), Samuel (1 Sam 1-2), David (Ruth 4:17-22), and our Lord Jesus Christ (Gal 4:4-5). Conception, birth, and death are divine appointments, not human accidents, a part of God's wise and loving plan for His own people (Ps 116:15; 13:13-16). - Warren Wiersbe, Be Authentic

Genesis 47:13-48:22

A) Joseph saves the people through generous economic policy

47:1-17) Another year, all money is gone so everyone exchanges livestock for food

18-22) Another year, people give land, become slaves for food (except priests)

23-26) Joseph gives seed, establishes 1/5 tax 4/5 for family

B) Jacob excepts Joseph's children as his own, relaying God's promises

27-31) Jacob 70 years in Egypt near death at 147, Joseph promises to bury him out of Egypt

48:1-7) Jacob tells Joseph of God's promise, adopts Manasseh and Ephraim bury in Bethlehem

 - Gen 17:1) God Almighty El-Shaddai, Gen 28:13,19) Bethel, Luz, Gen 32:29) "What's your name?"

8-14) Jacob blesses Ephraim the youngest with his right hand

 - 15-16) May God, we've faithfully followed, my shepherd, bless these boys, increase greatly

 - 17-20) Joseph displeased, wanting Manasseh right, but Jacob his descendants will become group of nations

21-22) Israel to Joseph, God will be with you, take you back to land of fathers

So far, the men God chose to unexpectedly receive a familial firstborn birthright are:

  • Seth instead of Cain
  • Shem instead of Japheth
  • Isaac instead of Ishmael
  • Jacob instead of Esau
  • Joseph’s double blessing instead

Reconciliation by God's initiative, restores relationships

  •  The brothers’ acknowledgment of guilt in their treatment of Joseph and their concern for Jacob and Benjamin set the stage for reconciliation.
  • God took the initiative to bring reconciliation to a relational gap beyond human repair.
  • As applied to salvation, reconciliation first recognizes our sins have separated us from God and have placed us under His just wrath.
  • God took the initiative and sent His own Son to reconcile us with Himself.
  • God empowers His people to take the first step in seeking reconciliation
  • Reconciliation is an opportunity to lovingly restore people and relationships as we own our part and help others own their part in conflict. (Psalm 23)
  • In the power of the Holy Spirit, believers can use every conflict as an opportunity to model His reconciling love and encourage others to believe in Him. (Matthew 5-7)
  • Believers live out the ministry of reconciliation as we pursue peace and unity. (2 Cor 4-5)
  • Unexpected and undeserved love further the work of reconciliation. (Titus 3)
  • When I do not believe, my default is to hold a grudge; and I attempt to justify rather than own my part in a conflict.
  • When I believe, I ask God to give me the courage to make heartfelt amends when I sense a strain in a relationship and the integrity to ask for forgiveness for my part in any conflict.
  • As the most forgiven people in the world, Christians should be the most forgiving people in the world.
  • Who or what in your life are you finding it difficult to forgive?
  • How can the gospel of Jesus Christ motivate and empower you to forgive others?

Godly fear, kindness, sorrow, patience bring us to true repentance

In my BSF lesson this morning we see Judah interceded for Benjamin’s freedom and pled to take his place. What a wonderful blessing Godly fear can be in our lives. To move from being a counterfeit to a new creation.

13. What points in Judah’s speech show God’s work in his heart? (Genesis 44:18-34)

 - He confesses "God uncovered our guilt (Gen 44:16)". He's humble and respectful to authority (18-20), and tells the truth (21-32). Judah offers himself in place of the innocent (33-34), willing to do the time for the crime and takes responsibility for the oath he made to his father.

14. What could others see in you as evidence of God’s work in your life? What has contributed to that growth?

 - I work to help friends, acquaintances and strangers succeed in life. I build bridges of positive change, connecting people to God's way of life. My best friends were once strangers who went out of their way to show me the love of Christ. God gave me the gift of faith and repentance and the power to follow through.

15. a. Read Romans 2:4; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10 and 2 Peter 3:9. What is the difference between regret and repentance?

 Genesis 44:33-34;Romans 2:4; 2 Corinthians 7:9-10; 2 Peter 3:9

  • Fear when God uncovers your guilt (Gen 43-44)
  • God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance (Rom 2:4)
  • ...your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended...Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret (2 Cor 7:9-10)
  • The Lord...is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9)
The pride of mankind is to cause irreparable damage, then either try to 'make it work' or 'not care about it' but the wisdom of God is to humbly admit our guilt to God (Psalm 32:5; 1 John 1:9; Acts 19:18), accept his forgiveness in Jesus name (Romans 5:8; John 14:6; 1 John 5:20; Romans 10:13) and commit our lives to Jesus (John 10:10; Romans 12:1-3).

b. When has God’s kindness and patience led you to face your sin and repent?

I've been in a weekly prayer group for Alpha in our region every Monday. Every Monday is an opportunity for me to see God's kindness and patience. When I pray with others and for others I see my sin and know that God wants to make me new and whole again. Often when it's time to pray I don't join in the presents of God because I'm harboring something that I need to let go. What a gift that God is kind and patient with me. Today is new day for all of us. Christ is greater in the rest he gives (Hebrews 3:7-4:13)

Judah sells Joseph, his family ruined then redeemed by Tamar (Gen 37-38)

aim: Family rivalry leads to wickedness, sorrow, and death

A) Joseph's dreams interpreted by family as ruler over them

1-4) Special robe, Joseph 17 - tending flocks hateful 1/2 brothers - gave bad report to Jacob

5-8) Joseph dream of binding sheaves, his arises, others bow down - hateful brothers interpret his ruling

9-11) Joseph another dream Sun, moon, eleven stars bowing to me Jacob interprets, keeps in mind

Application: positive promises are not received well by selfish, jelous people.

B) Brothers plot death but Judah sells Joseph

19-24) brother's plot murder and cover-up, Reuben throw in cistern instead, take the robe

38:1-11) Judah + Shua, son Er (wife Tamar), Onan (Tamar), Shelah (young)

 - first 2 sons killed by the Lord, wicked in his sight (Gen 6:5), Judah blames Tamar

12-19) Shua dies, Jacob goes to Timnah for prostitute (Judges 14:1), Tamar deceives him get pregnant by him (seal, cord, staff)

20-23) Judah sends Adullamite to Enaim to pay the prostitute, can't find her

24-26) Tamar's pregnancy infuriates Judah until he realizes he's the father

 - You are more righteous than I (1 Samuel 24:17), stories linked together and told together in Andy Stanely's book

27-30) Tamar has twins, Perez, Zerah

application: God's plan of redemption often means the unrighteous must die (David, Jesus from line of Judah). Judah is given a second chance with Tamar and never defiles her again. Could this be a turning point in his life? Will he stay an honorable man and raise these children differently than the first two boys who grew up wicked in God's sight?

I had the pleasure of hosting an interfaith dialog at work on Racial Reconciliation. Some ideas that I learned, Jewish writing see the significance of God creating all men from Adam - kill a life, kill a world - save a life, save a world. This idea is in other faiths as well. Another interesting note; God saw everyone being the same as a problem (tower of Babel). He wanted different ethnicities and people groups so we could learn from each other. Unity in Diversity. Wonderful.

Jacob served Laban for 20 years, then left for Canaan (Gen 30-31)

 (Gen 30-31)

God’s eternal purpose through Israel was to bless all people through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. 23 times in this passage, God is mentioned as showing people what he is doing in family and generations. God's role is understood by these flawed people in sorrow and joy. The Doctrine of Eternal Security is based on the finished work of Jesus Christ (John 10:27-30; Romans 8:31-39; Ephesians 1:13-14). I love how the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work together in our salvation. We sin less now by the power of God's discipline, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace (Proverbs 3:11-12; Hebrews 12:4-12). Those who believe, know, and love Jesus will inherit eternal life. Eternal life begins as soon as we become God’s child and never ends. By God's grace, we experience new life rather than imitating Jesus, we trust Him and in trusting experience eternal life. Satisfying reality is found in the living person of Jesus Christ.

By God’s power, our salvation is preserved and protected

https://www.bsfonline.org/ provides a great community for learning and applying the scripture to your life. This week learned about Eternal Security for the believer. Also the past few weeks at church we've had Rob Rienow author of Healing Family Relationships A Guide to Peace and Reconciliation. Healing family relationship has the following God-ordained principles. Forgiveness, prayer, repentance, listening, acceptance, spiritual warfare, boundaries, compassion, patience, mediators, mercy, and generations.

By God’s power, our salvation is preserved and protected. True believers are kept from falling away

The Holy Spirit within us bears witness that we are saved (Romans 8:16). He is God’s “guarantee” that we are eternally secure (2 Corinthians 1:22).

When I do not believe, I feel I have to earn God’s love and my salvation. My confidence depends on what I do and how I do. I become anxious about eternity when I fall short.

When I believe, I have the assurance that God will never abandon me and that I will not lose my salvation when I do wrong or behave badly

Those who respond in faith to the gospel of Jesus Christ are eternally secure.
Our assurance of salvation can grow to even deeper certainty as we grow toward spiritual maturity.
How could you help the young believers in your life gain greater assurance of salvation?
 - Rob Rienw had three great points yesterday; every person needs three spiritual meals.
1. Personal prayer and scripture reading (speaking to and hearing from God)
2. Family Worship time, name a room in your home family worship room
3. Church Worship and Service

Rob Rienow said something interesting, if you don't have a meal you get hungry, when you don't know your hungry you get "hangry" - but a sign of terminal illness is people stop eating altogether. This struck a chord with me because Saturday night at MNTC Alpha was healing night. I gave my testimony of being 130 pounds (regular is 180), being able to see my heartbeat through my chest, and being crazy, full of terror. God healed me, preserved and protected me. Bringing me to a place of complete repentance. Jesus said "let your no be no and your yes be yes." 100% is way easier than leaving a little room for sin.
 -  The only thing I don’t like about a miracle is you have to be in a place to need one! - Rob Dean

In 1934, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote words that still apply today:
“The beginning of love for the brethren is learning to listen to them. It is God’s love for us that he not only gives us his Word but also lends us his ear… Many people are looking for an ear that will listen...”

God appeared to Jacob in a dream at Bethel (Gen 28:10-22)

Jacob dreams and God gives the promise/blessing Gen 28:12, (previously appeared to Abimelek Gen 20:3, will appear to Joseph Gen 37:19)

AIM: God draws near and shows grace to undeserving sinners (Gen 28)

 - Genesis 28:10-12 - Certain place is where Abraham first heard from God and built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD (Gen 12:1-7,8) leading up to his encounter before Sodom burned.

What does pain in the process of spiritual growth reveal about the redemptive power of God?

  • Consider trials as pure joy; testing faith perseverance and maturity; ask God for wisdom, complete faith (James 1:2-8)
  • Submit to human authority, do good, free - yet slave to God; holy, righteous, reverent, conscious of God. Suffer for doing good, commendable before God (1 Peter 2:13-22;  Romans 6:18,19,22; Ro 7:25; 1Co 7:22; Eph 6:6; 1Pe 2:16; Matthew 25:46)
  • Spiritual Eagerness to do good brings blessing, life, resurrection, Christ as Lord, hope with gentleness and respect (1 Peter 3:13-22)

God draws near and shows grace to undeserving sinners (Gen 28)

In Genesis 27, we saw how favoritism often backfires, bringing the opposite of our heart's desire. When Isaac found out Jacob lied, he cursed Esau, to a path of sadness, servitude, and violence (instead of owning his mistakes and going to the LORD). Now we see a change of heart in Issac.

Genesis 28:1-4

"Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him" with specific instructions on marriage. He said, "May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful," and extended God's grace to his descendence.

Genesis 28:6-9

"Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob" with specific instructions on marriage and did the opposite of obeying, he "realized how to displease his father" with his life choices.

Genesis 28:12-15

Jacob's response to God’s grace is to simply and gratefully receive it. We do this when we follow God's specific instructions.  Question 10a tonight, we see God’s grace in action. God would give Jacob and his descendants the actual physical land upon which Jacob now lay. It was a gift of grace from God, not won through clever conniving or deceitful scheming (Genesis 28:13-15)

BSF gives this wonderful teaching
  • Grace is the free and unmerited love, mercy, and favor of God given to the undeserving.
  • We have done and can do nothing to earn God’s grace.
  • The assurance of God’s grace gives confidence and hope.
  • Our proper response to God’s grace is to simply and gratefully receive it.
  • When I do not believe, I continually wrestle with a guilty, confusing past and face an anxious, uncertain future.
  • When I believe, I long to share the grace of God with those who are drowning under the burden of their sin, guilt, and shame.
The call-out in the notes “Two brothers, two paths,” we see how grace and our choice work together. One brother turned to God; one brother turned away from God.

What does daily life reveal about your response to God? Do you struggle against self-denial and surrender to God? Are you quick to humble yourself and yield to God?

  • Common Grace, “He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” (Matt 5:45)
  • Saving Grace, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” (Eph 2:8)
  • Sanctifying  Grace, “he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion” (Philippians 1:6).
  • Provisional   Grace, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights.” (James 1:17)
  • Miraculous Grace, “Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing miracles and signs among the people” (Acts 6:8)
  • Serving Grace, “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10)
  • Sustaining Grace, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9), “Let us, therefore, draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need” (Heb 4:16)

“I believed in God, so I spoke.”  & God’s grace reaches more and more people

What makes grace hard to receive? What makes it difficult to extend grace to others?
