Cross-Cultural Ministry

Know Your Group's Lived Experience

Before teaching, ask yourself what pain people carry -- suffering, poverty, persecution, minority status, or feeling like an outsider. These aren't abstract; they shape how people hear God's Word.

Supporting verses:

  • Romans 12:15 -- "Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn."
  • Hebrews 13:3 -- "Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body."
  • James 2:5 -- "Has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith?"

Communicate with Cultural Humility

We naturally see others through our own lens. That blind spot can damage relationships and block discipleship. Eight practical strategies help bridge those gaps: summarize often, seek understanding over debate, speak clearly, be warm and open, invite rather than assume participation, ask good questions, match your tone, and align your words with your body language.

Supporting verses:

  • Proverbs 18:13 "If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame."
  • James 1:19 "Be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger."
  • Colossians 4:6 "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person."
  • 1 Corinthians 9:22 "I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some."

Build Gospel Unity Around God's Word

A multicultural group is not a problem to manage, it is a picture of the gospel. The Word unifies what culture divides. Our goal is to give people space to grow in Scripture and to celebrate both the unity and diversity of Christ's body.

Supporting verses:

  • Galatians 3:28 "There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."
  • Ephesians 2:14 "For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility."
  • Revelation 7:9 "A great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne."
  • Psalm 133:1 "How good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!"

The Spirit Makes It Work

Cultural strategy alone falls short. It is the Spirit who opens hearts, and the Word that transforms them -- in every language, background, and life story.

Supporting verses:

  • Isaiah 55:11 -- God's Word will not return empty; it accomplishes his purpose.
  • 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 -- Paul's message came "in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in human wisdom."
  • John 17:21 -- Jesus prayed "that they may all be one... so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

Reverence and thoughtful measurement that God's Word provides (Colossians 3:1-17)

Colossians 3:1-17, encourages us to focus on heavenly life with Christ; true life hidden, glorious. Reject sinful nature, embrace renewal in Christ; unity and transformation define new life. Clothe yourselves with love, forgiveness, humility, and Christ’s peace. Let Christ’s message guide all; live gratefully as his representatives.

I'm going to gramma Gail's church in Edina with Tony today. At this church they take communion every week and hold the sacrament with Holy Reverence. We had breakfast yesterday and talked about how the Bible shapes our thinking and renews our minds as we worship in the Word (Romans 12:1-4).

Communion is taking God's word to heart (John 6:56), faith comes by hearing the word about Christ (Romans 10:17). Just as every human birth has two parents, so divine birth has two parents: the Word of God and the Spirit of God. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit (John 3:6).", "for you have been born again [that is, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] not of seed which is perishable but [from that which is] imperishable and immortal, that is, through the living and everlasting word of God. (1 Peter 1:23 AMP)" - God’s Word nourishes our souls and renews our mind (Revelation 10:9-11)

Enjoying thinking about the plumb line in scripture (Isaiah 28:17, Amos 7:7-9) as I was reading Mystery of Christ's body being revealed (Rev 10:7, Eph 1:9–10, Rom 1:16-17)

A plumb line is a ancient builder's tool: a weighted string dropped vertically to establish a perfectly straight, true line. Builders used it to check whether a wall was genuinely upright or dangerously crooked. In Scripture, God borrows this image powerfully as a metaphor for divine judgment and moral standard.

Amos 7:7-9 — The Wall That Cannot Stand

In Amos's vision, God stands beside a wall holding a plumb line and asks, "What do you see, Amos?" The answer: God is setting his plumb line against Israel. The meaning is stark:

  • Israel was once built straight, according to God's covenant standards
  • But the nation has drifted so far from true that it cannot be corrected
  • God declares he will "spare them no longer" — the wall must come down

The specific judgment that follows (v. 9) targets the high places, sanctuaries, and the house of Jeroboam — the centers of false worship and corrupt leadership. The plumb line exposes that Israel's religion and governance are structurally unsound.

Isaiah 28:17 — Justice and Righteousness as the Standard

In Isaiah, God announces he will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line. The context is a rebuke of Jerusalem's leaders who have made a "covenant with death" — trusting in lies and false alliances rather than God. The plumb line here does two things:

  • It sets the positive standard: God's kingdom and his anointed cornerstone (v. 16) will be built on justice and righteousness
  • It demolishes the false: the hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, because nothing built crooked will survive God's measurement

The Theological Core

Taken together, the plumb line passages teach several things:

God has an objective standard. The plumb line isn't arbitrary. It represents God's own character — his justice, righteousness, and covenant faithfulness — against which all human structures (nations, worship, leadership, moral life) are measured.

Deviation accumulates and eventually collapses. A wall slightly off plumb may stand for a while, but the further it leans, the more certain its fall. Both Amos and Isaiah address nations that had drifted gradually but were now past the point of self-correction.

Judgment is diagnostic before it is punitive. God holds up the plumb line not out of cruelty but because a crooked wall is a danger to those living under it. True love requires honest measurement.

The standard also points to hope. In Isaiah 28, the plumb line is tied to the cornerstone God lays in Zion (v. 16) — quoted in the New Testament as a reference to Christ (1 Peter 2:6; Romans 9:33). The one who is the true standard is also the one who builds the only wall that will last.

The plumb line is ultimately God saying: I know what straight looks like, and I am measuring.

Lord help me to take your Word seriously and reverently today. Amen.

Community Before Saul: Acts 1-8 as a Revival Pattern

Enjoying the BSF Nehemiah Study and thinking about the sequence of revival from Nehemiah 9 and the reality that Sometimes we're Saul, sometimes we're Ananias (Acts 9)

"The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ." and  "There is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future." - 1 Corinthians 12:12, Ephesians 4:4

By the time Saul appears on the road to Damascus, the Jerusalem church had already lived through a compressed revival sequence.

Stage 1-2: Gathering and Humility (Acts 1:12-14). After the Ascension, the disciples returned and "all met together and were constantly united in prayer." Mary, the brothers of Jesus, all the women — a gathered, waiting, humbled community.

Stage 3: Hearing the Word (Acts 2:1-4, 14-36). At Pentecost, Peter stood and preached. The community did not manufacture the moment; the Word broke in. Peter's sermon is structured around Old Testament recital — exactly the "remember God's faithfulness" move from Nehemiah 9:7-39.

Stage 4: Confession (Acts 2:37). "The people were cut to the heart and said, 'Brothers, what should we do?'" This is group confession as response to proclaimed Word. The exact mechanism Nehemiah 9:2-3 follows.

Stage 5-6: Remembering Faithfulness and Acknowledging Righteousness (Acts 2:38-40). Peter grounds the call to repentance in what God has done and promised. The appeal is theological before it is emotional.

Stage 7: Crying Out for Mercy (Acts 4:23-31). After Peter and John are threatened, the church gathers and prays, "O Sovereign Lord, creator of heaven and earth..." They cry out. The place shakes. This is corporate intercession in extremity. (God defines victory by persistent faith and obedience)

Stage 8: Worship Through Witness (Acts 4:33, 5:12-16). The apostles testify with power. Signs and wonders follow. The community's life becomes its worship.

Stage 9: Renewed Obedience Under Cost (Acts 5:29, 8:1-4). "We must obey God rather than men." Then persecution scatters them and "the believers who were scattered preached the Good News about Jesus wherever they went." Obedience costs everything and spreads further.

Saul watched Stephen die in the middle of this (Acts 7:58). The community's revival pattern was visible to him before he was confronted on the road.

Acts 9: Saul's Personal Revival Sequence

Saul is the perfect case study in what happens when a person is rendered completely helpless by God's intervening grace. The nine stages compress into a three-day crisis.

Stage 1 — Gather before God (involuntary): "A light from heaven suddenly shone down around him" (9:3). God initiates. Saul does not come to God; God comes to Saul.

Stage 2 — Humble yourself (forced): "He fell to the ground" (9:4). The proud Pharisee is on his face in the dirt. For the helpless, humility is not achieved but imposed by grace.

Stage 3 — Hear the Word: "A voice said to him, 'Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?'" (9:4). The first thing God does is speak. Even here, revival comes through Word.

Stage 4 — Confess honestly: In Acts 22:10, the fuller account includes: "What should I do, Lord?" That question is confession in disguise. It is the abandonment of the self-directed life.

Stage 5-6 — Three days of helplessness (9:9): Blind, fasting, no food or water. In the darkness, Saul has nothing but what he knows of God's character and the words he just heard. This is the "remember and acknowledge" stage, done alone and in the dark. (Three Days, recurring theme in the Bible for changing your heart)

Stage 7 — Cry out for mercy: The vision of Ananias (9:12) suggests Saul was already praying before Ananias arrived. The helpless man cried out, and God moved Ananias.

Stage 8 — Ananias as the Able One (9:10-17): Here your framing is theologically rich. Ananias models the "able" person's role in revival. He received clear instruction ("the Lord said to him"), obeyed despite fear, came with physical touch and brotherly address ("Brother Saul"), and served as the instrument of healing and filling. The able person enables the helpless person to complete the sequence they could not complete alone.

Stage 9 — Immediate renewed obedience (9:18-20): "Immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues, saying, 'He is indeed the Son of God!'" Repentance that does not produce obedience is not repentance.

Other Biblical Patterns That Confirm This Sequence

Joel 2:12-17 is the most direct prophetic parallel. God calls: "Return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning." Then: "Gather the people... Let the priests weep and plead..." The sequence moves from individual return to communal gathering to priestly intercession to the cry: "Spare your people, Lord."

2 Chronicles 7:14 is the compressed formula: humble, pray, seek, turn. Each verb implies the stages around it. Humility assumes gathering. Seeking implies hearing. Turning is renewed obedience.

Psalm 51 is David's personal revival moving through the exact sequence: honest confession (v.3-4), acknowledgment of God's righteousness (v.4), cry for mercy and cleansing (v.7-9), the request for a new heart (v.10-12), and the vow of worship and proclamation as obedience (v.13-15).

Jonah 3 shows a pagan city moving through it collectively: the word comes (stage 3), the king decrees humility and fasting (stage 2), "everyone must turn from their evil ways" (stage 4), "who knows? Perhaps God will change his mind" (stage 7, mercy). God relents. Revival happens outside Israel through the same structure.

Luke 15 (Prodigal Son) maps the individual arc: far country (exile), "he came to his senses" (Word breaks through internally), "I will go home and say... I am no longer worthy" (confession, humility), the father runs (God's faithful initiative), the embrace (mercy), the robe and ring (worship and restoration), the feast (renewed life together). (Gospel-centered holiness, Jesus elevates repentance (Luke 15:7)

The Helpless/Able Theology Running Through All of This

The Saul-Ananias pairing is not unique. It is a repeated pattern in Acts and Scripture:

  • Acts 3: The lame man at the gate cannot rise on his own. Peter and John, "able," speak and reach down. The helpless man leaps.
  • Acts 10: Cornelius is devout but incomplete. He cannot reach the gospel alone. Peter, "able," is sent. But Peter also needs the vision — he is helpless in his prejudice until God corrects him.
  • Acts 16: The Philippian jailer is undone by an earthquake. Paul and Silas, though chained, are spiritually "able." They speak. He is restored. (Money, the power of God's word and dreams)

The theological point beneath all of this is 2 Corinthians 12:9: "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness." The helpless are not outside the revival pattern; they are often its clearest demonstration. Ananias doesn't replace Saul's revival sequence; he enables it to reach completion.

The able person's role is not to perform revival for the helpless but to be, as Ananias was, a clear-instructed, obedient instrument who comes, touches, speaks the Word, and steps back. The Lord does the rest.

This is the structure of the body in 1 Corinthians 12 those who can carry must carry those who cannot, not so the weaker are excluded from the process, but so the whole body arrives at the same destination together.

Paul is not primarily writing about spiritual gifts as individual achievements. He is writing about corporate interdependence as the design of God. The gifts exist not to distinguish members from one another but to bind them to one another in mutual necessity. The chapter's logic moves in three acts: one Spirit, many members (v.1-11), one body, many parts (v.12-26), and the specific assignment of roles in the body (v.27-31). Every movement tightens the argument toward the same conclusion — no member completes the body's mission alone, and no member is dispensable to it.

This is the theological ground on which the Saul-Ananias pattern stands.

PEACE: invite God’s presence without pressure, shame, or coercion.

I like the PEACE framework for helping people through change (myself included). It stands for Problem, Empathy, Action, Change, End Result.

P. Problem. Prayer of Truth and Illumination

Scripture anchor
Psalm 139:23–24
“Search me, O God, and know my heart.”

Prayer reflection

God, we come to You without pretending.
We name what is real, not what we wish were true.
Show us where fear has blurred our vision.
Reveal what we have avoided facing.
Give us courage to see clearly without despair.

Silent reflection questions

  • What reality am I resisting naming before God?

  • What facts have I been afraid to acknowledge?

  • Where has avoidance felt safer than truth?

E. Empathy. Prayer of Lament and Compassion

Scripture anchor
Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.”

Prayer reflection

Lord, this season has been heavy.
You see the grief, the disappointment, the shame we do not say out loud.
Meet us here without condemnation.
Sit with us in the sorrow we have carried too long.
Remind us that pain does not disqualify us from Your care.

Silent reflection questions

  • What loss do I still need to grieve?

  • Where do I feel unseen or misunderstood?

  • What emotion have I been numbing instead of offering to God?

A. Action. Prayer of Willingness and Obedience

Scripture anchor
Proverbs 16:3
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

Prayer reflection

God, we do not ask for the full plan.
We ask for the next faithful step.
Give us willingness where motivation is weak.
Help us choose obedience over overwhelm.
Strengthen our hands for small acts of faithfulness.

Silent reflection questions

  • What small action am I resisting?

  • What step is within my control today?

  • Where might obedience come before understanding?

C. Change. Prayer of Identity and Stewardship

Scripture anchor
2 Timothy 1:7
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power, love, and self-control.”

Prayer reflection

Father, reshape how we see ourselves.
We reject the lie that we are powerless.
Teach us to steward what remains, not mourn only what is lost.
Restore our sense of agency as Your children.
Form character in us through this season.

Silent reflection questions

  • What identity am I living out right now?

  • Where have I confused limitation with helplessness?

  • What does stewardship look like in my present reality?

E. End Result. Prayer of Hope and Trust

Scripture anchor (sovereignty and freedom)
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord.” Jeremiah 29:11 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," Philippians 4:13

Prayer reflection

God, we place the future back in Your hands.
Not demanding comfort, but trusting Your faithfulness.
Help us imagine a future marked by stability, dignity, and peace.
Give us endurance to walk toward it step by step.
Teach us to hope without denying reality.

Silent reflection questions

Closing Prayer

Lord, we offer You what we have, not what we wish we had.
Meet us in truth.
Strengthen us in weakness.
Guide us in obedience.
And lead us into a future shaped by faith, not fear.
Amen.

A Gentle Reminder for You

Prayer prepares the heart.
Action moves the feet.
God honors both.

Don’t Pray More, Pray Better: How to Pray Effectively

Don’t Pray More, Pray Better: How to Pray Effectively - Bill Johnson

Prayer is not about saying more words. It is about aligning with God’s heart and partnering with Him to release His will on earth.

Matthew 6:7–10, John 15:7

1. Prayer Is Partnership, Not Performance

Effective prayer invites believers to co labor with God in what He already desires to do. God chooses to work through human agreement and obedience.
Genesis 1:26–28, Matthew 18:18–20, 2 Corinthians 6:1

2. Pray from Discernment, Not Assumption

Powerful prayer flows from listening to the Holy Spirit. Like Simeon and Anna, discernment grows through devotion, waiting, and sensitivity to God’s presence.
Luke 2:25–38, Romans 8:26–27, John 16:13

3. Agreement Sustains the Miracle

Words spoken after prayer matter. Doubt and negativity can undermine faith, while agreement with God protects what has been prayed into motion.
Mark 11:22–24, Proverbs 18:21, Hebrews 10:23

4. Jesus Secured the Victory

Sin and sickness were dealt with at the cross. Prayer is not convincing God to act but enforcing what Christ has already accomplished.
Isaiah 53:4–5, Colossians 2:13–15, John 19:30

5. Prayer Releases God’s Glory

Answered prayer advances the gospel and shifts spiritual atmospheres. Persistent, focused prayer has global impact, even across generations.
Habakkuk 2:14, Acts 4:29–31, Matthew 24:14

6. Pray Specifically and Expect Testimony

Targeted prayers invite targeted breakthroughs. Testimonies strengthen faith and multiply impact.
Philippians 4:6, Revelation 12:11, Psalm 66:16

Bottom Line
Do not pray longer. Pray aligned. Listen first. Agree fully. Speak life. Expect fruit.

My spirit is the lamp of the LORD, who sheds light on my inmost being (Proverbs 20:27)

Matthew 6:22-23: The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. / But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

Luke 11:34-36: Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are bad, your body is full of darkness. / Be careful, then, that the light within you is not darkness. / So if your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, you will be radiant, as though a lamp were shining on you.”

Lord, help me to stay away from media that takes me away from you. Help me to see what you want me to see, to be clear minded and self controlled so that I can pray. Above all to love eachother deeply, covering a multitude of sins. Let the peace of Christ dwell inside me, Coram Deo Alleluia.

Proverbs 20:27 is so interesting as it's translated into various ideas:

  • The human spirit is the lamp of the LORD that sheds light on one’s inmost being. NIV
  • The LORD’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive. NLT
  • The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the inner depths of his heart. NKJV
  • The spirit of a person is the lamp of the LORD, Searching all the innermost parts of his being. NASB
  • The spirit (conscience) of man is the lamp of the LORD, Searching and examining all the innermost parts of his being. AMP
  • The LORD’s lamp sheds light on a person’s life, searching the innermost parts. CSB

Genesis 2:7: Then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living being.

Job 32:8: But there is a spirit in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.

Psalm 18:28: For You, O LORD, light my lamp; my God lights up my darkness.

Psalm 139:23-24: Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. / See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting.

Isaiah 11:2: The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and strength, the Spirit of knowledge and fear of the LORD.

Isaiah 26:9: My soul longs for You in the night; indeed, my spirit seeks You at dawn. For when Your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness.

Isaiah 29:24: Then the wayward in spirit will come to understanding, and those who grumble will accept instruction.”

Jeremiah 17:10: I, the LORD, search the heart; I examine the mind to reward a man according to his way, by what his deeds deserve.

Zechariah 12:1: This is the burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel. Thus declares the LORD, who stretches out the heavens and lays the foundation of the earth, who forms the spirit of man within him:

John 1:4-5: In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. / The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 3:19-21: And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil. / Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. / But whoever practices the truth comes into the Light, so that it may be seen clearly that what he has done has been accomplished in God.”

John 8:12: Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Romans 8:16: The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Lord fill my life with your presence, and lead me into your promises. I place my life into your hands and I'm willing to let you carry me away. Yet I hear your servants say, "get up and walk." So Lord, I'll walk with you today. I'll let my yes be yes and my no be no. You are enough, you fill my cup, you make me strong, you're will be done. In my heart, my mind, my strength, my soul. I love you Lord, amen.

In Communion, we welcome the Lord's corrective discipline (1 Cor 11:20-34)

Key verse:

So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the Lord’s Supper, wait for each other. -1 Cor 11:33

When you meet together, you are not really interested in the Lord’s Supper. For some of you hurry to eat your own meal without sharing with others. As a result, some go hungry while others get drunk. What? Don’t you have your own homes for eating and drinking? Or do you really want to disgrace God’s church and shame the poor? What am I supposed to say? Do you want me to praise you? Well, I certainly will not praise you for this!

For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself. On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took some bread and gave thanks to God for it. Then he broke it in pieces and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant between God and his people—an agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this in remembrance of me as often as you drink it.” For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord’s death until he comes again.

So anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup. For if you eat the bread or drink the cup without honoring the body of Christ, you are eating and drinking God’s judgment upon yourself. That is why many of you are weak and sick and some have even died.

But if we would examine ourselves, we would not be judged by God in this way. Yet when we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned along with the world.

So, my dear brothers and sisters, when you gather for the Lord’s Supper, wait for each other. If you are really hungry, eat at home so you won’t bring judgment upon yourselves when you meet together. I’ll give you instructions about the other matters after I arrive.

Corrective Discipline:

  • Proverbs 3:11-12 - My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.
  • Revelation 3:19 - Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.
  • Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
  • Proverbs 29:17 Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart.

Freedom, liberty in communion with God

Sometimes we need a fresh start, we've been a failure and need to get back in step with the Lord. Sometimes a quick prayer doesn't feel like enough. Hebrews reminds us that God made a special day called "today" - today WHEN you hear his voice don't harden your heart, today is the day of salvation. Warn each other every day, while it is still "today", so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. (Heb 3:13)

  • Before work talk to God and give your ideas to him: “O Lord, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham. (Gen 24:12-14)
    • Then Pay attention:  Before he had finished praying... (he witnessed the answer)... “Praise the Lord, the God of my master, Abraham,” he said. “The Lord has shown unfailing love and faithfulness to my master, for he has led me straight to my master’s relatives.” (Gen 24:15-27)
  • Acknowledge the Lord to others: “So today when I came to the spring, I prayed this prayer: ‘O Lord, God of my master, Abraham, please give me success on this mission. (Gen 24:42)

Sometimes our prayers are interrupted by thoughts, obsessions, or desires that want to carry us away from the LORD. We need to "be still" and turn the lights on inside our heart, have a moment of reflection, let the word of Christ dwell within ourselves and take Holy Communion. In our hearts we can hold up the shield of faith that extinguish the enemy arrows from the outside, but on the inside of faith is peace.

  • Psalms 11:5 says that “the LORD tests the righteous,” and in Job 23:10, Job says of God, “When he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.” Similarly, God told Jeremiah, “I the LORD search the heart and test the mind” (Jeremiah 17:10), and Proverbs 17:3 declares that “the LORD tests hearts.”

Communion: The Meal of Absolute Victory - Bill Johnson (Sermon Clip) | Bethel Church

  • "This is my body" - "broken for you"
  • "By His stripes you WERE healed" - today I get to experience the liberty and forgiveness
  • Put someone on your lips and declare healing for them, in Jesus name.
  • As for me and my house we will serve the LORD.

Communion, the body and blood and the weekend (Psalm 23, John 13-21, Exodus 12)

Don't hold on theology of problems, hold onto theology of our solution. Take time with the LORD.
Psalm 19:13: Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. Keep me safe (from arrogant people/things), also, from willful (presumptuous, flagrant, conspicuously offensive, obviously inconsistent with what is right) sins; don't let them rule (control, dominion) over me. Then I shall be perfect (blameless, without spot) and free (acquitted, declared innocent, cleansed) from the evil of sin (transgression, greatest sin). May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.
  • But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed. / Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. James 1:14-15
  • If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. / If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. / If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us. 1 John 1:8-10
  • Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its desires. / Do not present the parts of your body to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and present the parts of your body to Him as instruments of righteousness. / For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. Romans 6:12-14
  • So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. / For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want. Galatians 5:16-17
  • No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it. 1 Corinthians 10:13
  • And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ Matthew 6:13
  • Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off every encumbrance and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with endurance the race set out for us. Hebrews 12:1
  • or because of these surpassingly great revelations. So to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. / Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. / But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:7-9

Investing in the next generation is love displayed in time

By this everyone will know that you are My disciples if you love one another. - John 13:35

No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us. 1 John 4:12

If someone says, “I love God,” but hates a fellow believer, that person is a liar; for if we don’t love people we can see, how can we love God, whom we cannot see? 1 John 4:20

Though you have not seen Him, you love Him; and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him and rejoice with inexpressible and glorious joy,- 1 Peter 1:8

If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. - 1 John 1:6

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. - 1 John 1:8

If anyone says, "I know Him," but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him. - 1 John 2:4

If anyone claims to be in the light but hates his brother, he is still in the darkness. - 1 John 2:9

But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness. He does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes - 1 John 2:11

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person? 1 John 3:17

If there is a poor man among your brothers within any of the gates in the land that the LORD your God is giving you, then you are not to harden your heart or shut your hand from your poor brother. - Deuteronomy 15:7

Whoever oppresses the poor taunts their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors Him. - Proverbs 14:31

Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor, he too shall cry out and receive no answer. - Proverbs 21:13

Life within reach (John 15:7)

Wow, Andrew Murray - what grace that's lasted over 100 years! I'm excited to start this series of books by him. Andrew Murray Collection on Prayer Humility, Absolute Surrender, the Ministry of Intercession, the Power of the Blood of Jesus and Others

In The-Ministry-of-Intercession-Andrew-Murray He confesses on behalf of every minister a general failure to believe God and simply live completely surrendered to him.

Christ waits to fit us by His Spirit to pray as He would have us. This call, of course, brings me back to what I spoke of in connection with the former volume: that there is life in the Spirit, a life of abiding in Christ, within our reach, in which the power of prayer both the power to pray and the power to obtain the answer can be realized in a measure which we could not have thought possible before. Any failure in the prayer-life, any desire or hope really to take the place Christ has prepared for us, brings us to the very root of the doctrine of grace as manifested in the Christian life. It is only by full surrender to the life of abiding, by the yielding to the fulness of the Spirit's leading and quickening, that the prayer-life can be restored to a truly healthy state.

In John 14-16 Jesus explains how he is the Way, the Truth, and the Life in response to Thomas' question, “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?” (John 14:5,6)

THE TRUTH:

  • The words I speak are not my own, but my Father who lives in me does his work through me. (John 14:10)
  • Just believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me (John 14:11) - Key Christian Doctrine: Jesus is God's son (John 3:16)

THE PROMISE:

  • anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works (John 14:12)
  • You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it (John 14:13)
  • Question: Are you living in this reality of asking anything in Jesus' name and it's done? Have you asked God for something and witnessed him doing it? If not keep reading.

THE WAY:

THE TRUTH:

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.

The Advocate, Helper comes alongside and leads into ALL truth. Think of all the great truths that have been discovered since Christ rose from the dead and sent the Holy Spirit onto all people.

Question: Have you experienced God in your heart as you've discovered the truth in your own life? Do you receive divine truth and recognize that it's not you but God showing you?

The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him.

Question: Why must we receive the Holy Spirit? Do you know the difference between other spirits and the Holy Spirit? Will you take the time to find out? Holy Spirit tactics vs the devil tactics

THE LIFE:

But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. (John 14:15-17).

Question: Have you ever known someone who demonstrated the love of God to you? Where they authentically love you on behalf of God and you knew it was true? Or maybe you had an experience where some terrible calamity was upon you and "for some reason" you were spared by some force outside yourself? Or some benevolent thing happened to you or your family that was life-giving or life-saving? This is the Holy Spirit who is with you. The life Jesus talks about is allowing the grace of God into your life.

Christ changes me, my relationships benefit (Col 3)

Praise God who comforts us, so we can comfort others (2 Cor 1:3-4)

Relational Grace: Loving kindness of Christ in me

Live the New Life in Christ

God promises to help me obtain the promises

Suffering in Christ, with Holy Spirit brings unfathomable hope (Romans 8:17-30)

Poetry communicates more with less, searching our hearts (Romans 8:26-27)

Yesterday I started the prayer course by Pete Greig at work (SALT). First he said everyone prays naturally. To pray is to be human. He said prayer is the humble reaction to the realization that we are alive. He had this wonderful illustration of humans praying to God, like his son drawing a mess with color crayons and saying "daddy read." So being a good dad, he'd look at his son's face and know what he was trying to communicate. In relationship.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. - Romans 8:26-27

Being Human by Naima is a wonderful play on words, climbing poet-tree. I like this thought

I wonder if waves get discouraged
crawling up the sand
only to be pulled back again
to where they began

if land feels stepped upon
if sand feels insignificant
if trees need to question their lovers
to know where they stand

if branches waver at the crossroads
unsure of which way to grow
if the leaves understand they’re replaceable
and still dance when the wind blows

Years ago, I read a book by C.S.Lewis on the Psalms, he reminded me that Hebrew poetry is allegorical therefore translate into every language without loosing it's meaning. For example Psalm 1:
 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers. - Psalm 1:1-3

Angelic touch brings freedom for Peter and death to Herod (Acts 12)

In Acts 12 we see that angels can manifest and interact with people, bringing help in time of need or bringing judgment when a ruler has gone too far. We see divine intervention in Peter and Herod's life based on their character. We've seen the character of Peter living life obeying God and now we see the life of Herod against God. We also see that the prayers of the church matter, even when not everyone praying believes. And that being shrewd involves gaining support around an unreasonable king. I love the faith I see in this chapter, no fighting but trusting in God and witnessing miracles.

AIM: No matter what, the word of God spreads and flourishes

Acts 12
A) Angel frees Peter as people prayed
1-4) King Herod arrests/persecutes the church, James (John's brother) killed by the sword, Peter arrested during Unleavened Bread, public trial scheduled after Passover.
 - 5) Church earnestly prayed to God for Peter.
Principle: Prayer is our best response to any situation.  Intercessory Faith, believe in God on behalf of another
6-7) Night before trial, Peter sleeping between two soldiers, angel wakes him up "get up" chains fell off
 - 8-10) Put on clothes and sandals, follow the angel, they passed the guards at two gates, suddenly the angel left.
11-14) Peter came to himself, went to Mary (John Mark's mom), they were praying, Rhoda "Peter's at the door"
 - 15) they didn't believe her, they thought it was "his angel"
 - 16-17) Peter told them what happened and left
Application: divine appointments should be shared with others in the church.

B) Herod plays god and Angel strikes him dead
18-19) Herod looked for Peter, cross-examined guards and had them executed, went to Caesarea
20) Herod quarreled with people of Tyre and Sidon got support from Blastus (trusted servant) to seek peace with Herod for food.
21-23) Fancy Herod addresses people who praised him as a god, he didn't praise God, angel struck him down, eaten by worms and died
24)  But the word of God continued to spread and flourish.

How the Holy Spirit arrives and transforms our lives making us ready for heaven (Acts 2)

Earlier this year I began the study of Acts with my wife as she was preparing to teach the evening women class in Burnsville. In the study of Acts 2 I recognized that The Holy Spirit brings new communication and community. Now in reading the BSF notes for Acts 2, I rediscovered these wonderful verses in the "going deeper" section and added my own thoughts having read the verses.

When the Holy Spirit arrives our lives are forever, noticeably changed.
Calls: John 3; Ephesians 2:4-5, 8
 - Jesus tells us about the coming Holy Spirit and his impact being like wind, being like birth. We don't choose it but it's unmistakable.
 - Even our faith, it a free gift of God - not something we do. What we do is receive the gift.
Indwells: Philippians 2:1
 - United with Christ, sharing the Spirit gives us encouragement, compassion, tenderness, and love for one another.
Deposits: Romans 5:5
 - God's love is poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

The Holy Spirit brings continual change and guidance to us every day.
Counsels: John 16:13; Acts13:2; 16:7
 - As a guide, the Holy Spirit gives us a clear "yes" and "no"
Renews: John 14:26;1 Corinthians 2:11-13
 - God knows our thoughts and teaches us everything we need to know about Jesus and how to follow him.
Transforms: Galatians 5:22-23
 - He produces the best in us, love patience, gentleness, self-control. People know we are Jesus disciple by our love (John 13:34-35)
Empowers: Philippians 2:13;1 Corinthians 2:4
 - It's God at work in our lives, giving us the life-changing good news for others.
Comforts and convicts: John 16:7,8-11
 - Thank God that He accepts us where we are but doesn't leave us there.

The Holy Spirit prepares us for eternity with God
Holy: 2 Thessalonians 2:13;1 Peter 1:2
 - By the Holy Spirit at work within us we understand the truth and are obedient to God.
Grieves: Ephesians 4:30;1 Thessalonians 5:19
 - Yet we fall short and grieve the Holy Spirit. obedience comes from our desire to please God, not appease Him.
Seals: Ephesians 1:13-14
 - And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

Love one another is central to the Christian experience

The commmand to love one another is new in its emphasis, example and experience.

Emphasis is quality of love, agape
- 1 cor 13, 1 peter 4:7-11
Example is Jesus Christ (John 13-15)
- as I loved you, love one another
Experience, faith grace power of Holy Spirit. True, real, genuine.

4) love for God motivates us to obey the law of love, God's commands without thinking about them. Do you agree, why or why not.
  - we aren't motivated to work because of threats of the bank. Or care for our children because of threats from government.
- we get the right intuition, unconcious competence through the right analysis, conscious competence. However in the flesh we start with the wrong intuition, unconcious incompetence through the wrong analysis conscious incompetence.

5) Define true Christian love.
- Expects (faith), sees (hope), and desires (love) the best for everyone, bringing God praise, joy and glory.

6) how did Jesus exemplify this in his life?
- Jesus had expectations in life and was prepared for the journey. He counted the cost. He saw life beyond himself. He gave himself for others benefit, bringing glory to God.
- practical things Jesus did was to help people throughout his days in many ways.

7) practical advice on how to love one another

9) how does love prevent stumbling?

Laying sunbeams in a row

Warren Wiersbe "I felt like a man trying to lay sunbeams in a row while evening was marching inexorably in"

Work can feel impossible, with God all things are possible (Christ, listening, receptive to wisdom)
  • Simple, pure devotion to Christ is all that's needed (2 Cor 11:3)
  • Regret: A life lived well comes from listening to instruction and reproof (Proverbs 5:11-14)
  • If we're receptive to wisdom and ask for it, Lord reveals it to us (Proverbs 2:1-10

1 Peter 4:13-14) be eager to do good, you'll be safe, if mistreated for righteousness - still blessed by God
15-16) In heart set Christ apart as Lord, ready to give a logical defense of hope and confident assurance elicited by faith I have with gentleness and respect, let them see my good life because I belong to Christ
17) it's better to suffer for good than wrong

Lord bless the people I work for today, that they would see you. Bless the final class of Alpha, that each man would have a miraculous testimony to share - that they would be eager to find out. In Jesus name, amen.

God can "lay the sunbeams in a row" - amen
Philippians 2:2 "Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind."
1 Peter 3:8 "Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind."

Prayer is, among other things, an acknowledgment of God’s power, promises, and provision. When you pray, you show our dependence on God. The biblical command is to “present your requests to God” (Philippians 4:6).

later this morning, at just the right time of year, where the sun reflects on the edges of a curved building - the lord shows me this:

Unity is God's plan for His people

How good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1

I enjoy a weekly Bible Study with bsfinternational.org. I get to share miracles and hear about miracles every week. This week Edwin shared our prayers were answered with Angel's surgery, previously our prayers were answered with Angel's faith in this life or death situation.

This past weekend I spent Saturday praying for and with other friends. Jordon's sister Abby - rescue/protection, James father would accept Jesus as Lord and Savior - make this known. Sam's brother Timothy would thrive in his marriage and life, recovering from surgery - protected from addictive medication. We prayed for healing, emotional-physical-mental. We prayed for Cody's girlfriend's recovery and strength to lead as a man of God. For Anders and Wyatt, patience and understanding. For Joe's baby mama, Nicole - she lost a child and went dark - we prayed for the light of God to shine in her heart - protection in the storm and for others to come into her life. Dale and I prayed for forgiveness, admitted our sins and others followed in that process.

Disunity brings pain, 2 Samuel 2:8-5:5

New Reality of unity
God not only has united you with Christ, but also with all believers in one body through the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:4-6
Love unites: Colossians 3:14

Through Christ we can live these realities (from BSF Notes: People of the Promised Land I, Lesson 22)

  • New goal: “Complete unity ... then the world will know that you [Father] sent me [Jesus] and have loved them even as you have loved me.” John 17:22-23
  • New calling: “Live a life worthy of [your] calling.” Ephesians 4:1
  • New lifestyle: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2, Colossians 3:12-17
  • New work: “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3
  • New motive: “Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13
  • New mindset: “In humility value others above yourselves. … In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:1-5
  • New power: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you.” Acts 1:8
  • New limit: “As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone." Romans 12:18

Simple devotion to Christ, brings wisdom, protects against deceit and regret
Christians united, single-minded according to scripture (1 Peter 3:8-4:19)
Christ brought peace, unity on the cross, broke the wall of hostility between us (Eph 2:14)

Run from Physical sin (1 Cor 6:13-20)

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20 NLT

Arguments that contradict God's word:
It's legal (God's plan is higher than mans plan)
It's biological (You're not an animal, you're an image bearer) 1 Cor 6:13
- desires are man made
- God changes our desires, comforms us to Christ
It's my body, (It's God's 1 Cor 6:13-14)
- you didn't create it, you steward your body
It only affects me
- 1 Cor 6:15,16 - sex is more than physical
- see family and community impact
- we are never alone, God knows us completely (Psalm 139, 1 Cor 6:19-20)
- we drag Jesus reputation through the mud. We carry his name in vain. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

Run from sexual sin! No other sin so clearly affects the body as this one does. For sexual immorality is a sin against your own body.
1 Corinthians 6:18 NLT

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
1 Corinthians 6:19‭-‬20

God changes us through people, in-spite of our shortcomings

for a wide door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many adversaries.
1 Corinthians 16:9 ESV

My friend Jason asked me to listen to Ron Carpenter's levels. A teaching that affirms God isn't a God of a lottery but of levels. It's based on Ruth 2, where Ruth had to go into the field to be seen by Boaz. He teaches that being faithful with little things leads to bigger things. I can see how this teaching is valuable for getting un-stuck. God meets us where we are but doesn't leave us there.

Bigs idea: Realize God's blessings, when helping someone in need and accepting good advice (doing it faithfully)

  • You can't go into your future dragging your past (Ruth 1)
  • You can't have favor unless someone sees you (Ruth 2)
    • Our world has representatives (Preachers, Christians represent God). When someone prays and I show up - I'm Jesus to that person. God doesn't always like how he's represented.
    • We've experienced disappointment in our representatives' politicians, realtors, lawyers, managers, employees
  • You've got to change people (Ruth 2:8)
    • Get involved with believers, go and become part of what God is doing in the church
    • Be under the protection and guidance of godly ministry
  • Things can change
    • Nothing we are dealing with is a terminal sentence (finance, health, emotions, relationships)
    • God is all about change, Jesus came to change things, sent the Holy Spirit to change things
    • Jesus came to give life, don't be addicted to church

So then yesterday, I met Vince Miller of beresolute.org. He talked about mentoring as being a little skill and a little time invested in someone for some time. Jesus had 12 guys and 22 months. I've asked him about presenting at my work (SALT) and he gave me this great book, Thirty Virtues That Build A Man. He said every problem in the world is the fault of gender men. Our worst enemy is apathy. Men don't mentor men for two reasons, 1) don't have time, 2) don't know what to do.

I'm signed up for man-up-2018-fall-emaw-fridays.

Unity in the Church: People of God together (1 Cor 10-17)

What is the church?
  • Matt 16, Jesus promises to build church gates of hell not against it
  • John 17. Jesus prays for Christian unity in the church
  • 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, the church is everyone who calls on Jesus as Lord and Savior is the church.
  • Jesus changed Paul, to lead the church for non-Jews
  • Paul built a church in Corinth for a year and a half. But it began to fall apart.

1 Corinthians 1:10-17
Scripture Outline:
10-12) appeal in Jesus name for unity,
heard about division (from Chloe) around teachers (Paul, Apollos, Peter, Christ).
13-16) Christ is not divided into other baptisms
17) called not to baptize but preach
Application: intimacy with Jesus doesn't mean maturity in faith. Maturity comes with serving in unity with people. No lone ranger Christians
Principle: know your role as a Christian. It's about Jesus on the cross for our sins reconcile us to God, who changes our hearts.
For Christ did not send me [as an apostle] to baptize, but [commissioned and empowered me] to preach the good news [of salvation]--not with clever and eloquent speech [as an orator], so that the cross of Christ would not be made ineffective [deprived of its saving power].
1 CORINTHIANS 1:17 AMP
In other words: Christianity works because Jesus is really God, really died for our sins, and really makes a relationship with God possible through the Holy Spirit he sent after the resurrection and ascension.

Message Outline:
1. Unity doesn't mean absolute tolerance
- sin, error, false teachings should not be tolerated in the church
- we maintain our conviction without losing compassion
2. Unity doesn't mean uniformity
- we don't have to look the same,
- diversity is good
3. A difference doesn't need to become divisions
- Basics of Gospel we all agree
- Drums, vs hymns, are differences. Spiritual gifts, style, end times we allow different perspectives
- we are like  a multi-lane highway, with a bike lane and walking lane
Bottom line, let's respect each other in preferences, embrace unity around our need for Jesus Christ
