What Jesus taught about ministry in secular culture

Focus on Family presents, That  the world may know, Ray Vander Laan
Death & Resurrection of the Messiah
Session 1 –  When the storms come, see the full series here
Water is important, Jesus ministry is set by the largest body of fresh water (sea of Galilee)

John 21:4-11 – Jesus instructs them to pull in a huge catch of fish (153 fish, all the nations)
Jesus kingdom is big enough for all people
Lake represented some negative things as well “the abyss”,
Mark 6:45-46 ; rowing for 8 hours (4th watch). We struggle in our lives, but God allows us to have struggle. “He was about to pass them by (even in their struggle)”
They were terrified, Mark 6:50-52 it is I don’t be afraid, they didn’t understand because hearts were hardened. We still need to reach out and call for him Mark 6:53.
We should row in the direction we think God wants us to go
Matthew 14:22-33; they worshiped him, truly you are the son of God. Peter tried it even having not ever done it before
3 observations

  • God has power over evil, whatever we face personally, Jesus has power over it
  • Peter’s courage, he tried it
  • Fishing. Peter was an expert fisherman, takes skill and practice – he didn’t catch anything. But we need to keep casting. God’s prepared something for us and there will be people who need what we’ve been given.

Session 2 – Piercing the Darkness
Acts 13:19 – Joshua 3 – Decapolis (south east of Decapolis) – pagan area
Feeding of 5,000 – Mark 6:39-43, 12 baskets always represents the 12 twelves (bread of life to the 12
Mark 7:31, 8:6-8, they picked up 7 baskets that were left over (to the seven nations driven out)
This was an unclean area, pagan religions across the sea/decapois. Mark 4:35 (let’s go over the other side) – 4:36, lake is seen as the abyss, where the devil lives
Jesus was sleeping, and they were thinking devil is going to swamp them – that’s what we get for going into devils territory
Where’s your faith: quiet
Power of evil/demons/wind and waves does what he says
Mark 5:2-5 man in the tombs, no one to subdue him.
Mark 5:6-11 pigs represent the sacred animal of the pagan fertility god
Into the abyss like bael
Mark 5:14-17 leave this area.
Jesus deliberately went to evil and confronted it. As Jesus did find where the evil is and confront it, don’t wait for it to come to us.
People pleaded for him to leave (I thought it was financially driven those pigs are worth a lot of money)
Mark 5:18-20 Jesus didn’t let him in the boat, go home to your family, tell them wait he’s done
Just tell them what God has done in our lives (no a seminary degree needed)
Matthew 15:29-31 – crowd brought all the sick to him to be healed and be healed
That man was a good missionary because a whole crowd was coming to Jesus now.

God calls us to be his people in a culture that doesn’t hold his values
Decisions were made with a bishop from this previously pagan area. Impassioned people make the most difference not the most knowledgeable. Go and show people what’s happened to you.
