Romans 6:1-11
At his resurrection Jesus ministered to the disciples for 40 days, revealing to them what the Law and the Prophets had said concerning himself (Luke 24:44-49; Acts 1:1-11). His final command was to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). When he died on the cross "It is finished" (John 19:30), salvation came to us when we accepted the gift of his payment on our behalf. We believe in our heart and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and Savior, the Christ (Romans 10) - we do this publicly and are baptized. Have you been baptized? Why did Jesus command this? What does baptism reveal about our faith? Many churches do Holy Communion weekly but practice baptism once, why?
Jesus said of communion:
On a side note, I took a friend from India to church years ago and while the band was playing and the light show was going on, they dipped a guy in the water. My friend was astonished, "what's going on?" It was too loud for me to explain...Another time the pastor doing the baptism said, "in the name of Father who loves you, the Son who died for you and the Holy Spirit living within you" - now that's more like it! A little clarity and teaching goes a long a way!
So this passage is the only place in Romans that Paul talks about baptism, he makes his point clear that starting your life In Christ is being obedient in baptism. Galatians 3:27 say, "for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ." 1 Cor 1:13-17, makes it clear we aren't baptized into a particular church or minister, but "In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit" - 1 Cor 15:1-58 has the great foundational teaching about Jesus life, death, resurrection and what we believe about our own lives in Christ.
All that is just a side note that came to mind in my study of Romans 6 and is not at all the main thrust of Paul's message here, therefore I need to get to work and read the test without getting bogged down.
