Solid Hope: God's promise, perfection in Jesus intercession (Heb 6:13-7:28)

Focus Verses:
  • This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. Heb 6:19
  • For the law never made anything perfect. But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God. Heb 7:19
  • But because Jesus lives forever, his priesthood lasts forever. Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf. Heb 7:24-25
  • He is the kind of high priest we need because he is holy and blameless, unstained by sin. He has been set apart from sinners and has been given the highest place of honor in heaven. Heb 7:26

AIM: We can believe God's trustworthy promise and draw near to him through Christ


A) God has proven his trustworthy character in promises and history - Hebrews 6:13-20
13-15)  God promised Abraham (Gen 22:17), waited patiently and received
16-18)  God bound himself with an oath, receivers confident hope, God won't lie
19) Hope strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls, leads us into God's inner sanctuary

20) Resurrected Jesus went God and became our eternal High Priest, order of Melchizedek

B) Melchizedek greater than Abraham and Moses
7:1-2) Melchizedek (king of justice), king of Salem (king of peace), priest of God Most High, Abraham tithed
3) No records of beginning or end, resembling Son of God
4-7) Consider Melchizedek's greatness, blessed Abraham after he received God's promise, generations before Levi
8-10) Priest who collect tithes die, yet a tithe was paid before they were born through Abraham
11) Levi's law couldn't achieve perfection, God established a different priesthood
12-14) Jesus came from the tribe of Judah, Moses never mentioned this
 - Side note: Moses chronicled it in Genesis, Jesus explained at his resurrection
They said to each other, “Wasn’t it like a fire burning in us when he talked to us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:25-27 NIV, Luke 24:32 NIV)
 - Moses saw it (Deut 34:5-8) and experienced Jesus on the Mount (Matthew 17:1–8, Mark 9:2–8, Luke 9:28–36, 2 Peter 1:16-18)

  • Messiah would be human (Gen 3:15), fulfilled in Jesus (Romans 16:20; Gal 4:4; Rev 12:9;12:17)
  • Messiah from Abraham, all nations blessed (Gen 12:3), fulfilled in Jesus (Acts 3:24-26)
  • Messiah would be a willing sacrifice (Gen 22:1-18), fulfilled in Jesus (John 3:16)
  • Messiah from Judah, scepter belongs (Gen 49:10), fulfilled in Jesus (Luke 2:1-7; 3:33; Gal 4:4)
  • Messiah would be Passover Lamb (Exodus 12:1-51), fulfilled in Jesus (John 1:29,36;19:33,36;1 Cor 5:7-8;1 Peter 1:19)
  • Messiah would be lifted up (Numbers 21:6-9), fulfilled in Jesus (John 3:14-18)
  • Messiah a star from Jacob (Numbers 24:17), fulfilled in Jesus (Matthew 2:2, Rev 22:16)
  • Messiah a prophet like Moses (Deuteronomy 18:15-19), fulfilled in Jesus (Matthew 7:29;Mark 1:22;13:57;21:46; Luke 24:19; John 1:21,25;6:14;Acts 3:22; 28:28)
C) Jesus is like Melchizedek, rather than Levite - appointed by God, eternal
15-17) Jesus is the different priest by power of resurrected life, not Levi birth  (Ps 110:4)
18-21) old requirements set aside, now better hope to draw near to God (Ps 110:4)
 - 22) Because of this oath, Jesus is the one who guarantees this better covenant with God.
26-28) Jesus, holy and blameless, unlike a priest, his sacrifice was once for all. God appointed his Son perfect high priest forever.
