Characteristics God wants to develop in me

My wife is reading a book by 9marks Discipling which highlights that being Christian is not checking a box on a survey but "following Christ." Faith and obedience go together. When I first looked at the book I thought it said disciplining and it hit me that a disciple is someone under the discipline of another. Likewise, Character is who we are at the core is made up of characteristics. Charisma and talent cannot supplant character and faithfulness (What Does It Mean to Be “Qualified” for Ministry?)

I want to be known for godliness in my private and public life.

  • Seeking God every day, trusting His guidance, understanding the past (Deuteronomy 1:26-38; Psalm 95:6-11; Hebrews 3:7-19; Hebrews 4:1-8) (Works the Holy Spirit does in the believers life)
  • In relationships at home, at work, and with strangers 1 Timothy 3:1–6; Titus 1:5–9
  • Faithfulness in God's calling Eph 4:1-2, lowliness (humble and contrite in spirit, humility under God), meekness (mildness or gentleness of character, restrained strength). Humility under God gives strength in saying yes to God and no to all moral filth and evil (James 1:21). Meekness towards others brings gentle instruction (2 Tim 2:25) that builds up others (Acts 20:32, Eph 4:12,29, Romans 14:19, 1 Thes 5:11). Patience (steadfast endurance of suffering, slow to avenging wrongs) not retaliating (1 Peter 2:23). Forbearance is the practical outworking of patience. (Four Ways to Walk Worthy of Your Calling)
  • Not taking advantage but serving others Philippians 2:6-7, no matter how difficult (Acts 20:19)
