Abram descended from Shem, goes where the Lord shows him (Gen 11:10-12:20)

 Gen 11:10-12:20

Main truth: God calls His people and guides them in a new life.

A) Shem to Abram

10-11) Shem 102 (Arphaxad, 500 years + others)

12-13) Arphaxad 35 (Shelah, 403 years + others)

14-15) Shelah 30, (Eber, 403 years + others)

16-17) Eber 34, (Peleg, 430 years + others)

18-19) Peleg 30, (Reu 290 years + others)

20-21) Reu 32, (Serug, 207 + others)

22-23) Serug 30(Nahor 200 + others)

24-25) Nahor 29, (Terah, 119 + others)

26-30) Terah 70 years (Abram (Sarai childless, unable to conceive), Nahor (Milkah - Haran's daughter)

31-32) Terah took Abram, + grandson Lot son of Haran, from Ur of Chaldeans to Canaan, settled in Harran. (Terah 205 years)

Principle: God calls imperfect people to be His people.

B) Abram to Goes where the Lord shows him

12:1) Lord said to Abram Go, I will show you

2-3) a great nation, bless, great name, blessing everyone

4-5) Abram went, Lot, Sarai to Canaan

- Principle: God calls His people to receive His gift of new life.

Application: How would you explain new life through faith in God from this week’s lesson?

  • The Lord had said to Abram, “Go …I will show you.” - Gen 12:1
  • When called, he obeyed by faith – Seeing heavenly home - Heb 11:8-19
  • Born Again, by the Spirit (to see the kingdom of God) - John 3:3-17
  • God’s Creative Spirit waiting on God’s Word - Gen 1:2-3 
  • The Gospel is the power of God for all who believe - Romans 1:16

6-7) Abram great tree of Moreh at Shechem, Lord appeared "your offspring I will give this land", build altar to the Lord

8-9) east of Bethel, pitched tent, build altar to Lord, called on the name of the Lord. set out toward Negev

C) Abram betrays Sarai and Pharaoh

10-13) Famine, went to Egypt, devised scheme "Sarai my beautiful sister"

14-16) Sarai taken to pharaoh's, given sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, servants, camels

17-20) Lord inflicted serious disease on Pharaoh because of Sarai, Pharaoh gave her back and sent Abram away

Principle: God calls His people to depend on Him.

Application: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. - 1 John 5:1

  • The Gospel is the power of God for all who believe - Romans 1:16
  • By faith we increasingly see God's power in our lives - 2 Peter 1:1-4
  • Knowledge of God with obedience leads to increasing, effective faith - 2 Peter 1:5-10
