Wrath of God is our biggest problem (Gen 18:20-21, 19:12-15)

The outcry of evil from Sodom and Gomorrah was so great that the Lord went to investigate the wickedness before bringing judgment on the cities. (Gen 18:20-21)

The wrath of God is an expression of His fierce anger toward sin.

God’s wrath is not impulsive. God exercises His wrath with perfect justice and absolute knowledge. God is just. Therefore, He must exercise justice and judge sin (i.e. respond with wrath). God is consistent with His perfect character.

All people have a sin nature (Romans 5:19) and deserve God’s eternal wrath as His just response to their sin.

God’s wrath works in harmony with His patience and mercy. He does not compromise one of His attributes to exercise another.

Proper respect, holy fear, of the just wrath of God is an appropriate response for all humanity.

The full weight of God’s wrath fell on His Son when He bore the punishment for sin

  • John 3:36 “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:9 “For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,”
  • Romans 5:9 “Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.”

Application: Interceed for others, to bring truth to people we must have a credible personal witness
Gen 19:12-15) The two men said to Lot, “Do you have anyone else here—sons-in-law, sons or daughters, or anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here, because we are going to destroy this place. The outcry to the Lord against its people is so great that he has sent us to destroy it.”

So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking.

Psalm 7:11 “God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.”

Ephesians 5:6  “Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.”

Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”
