Joseph experiences God's presence in slavery and prison (Gen 39-40)

 Gen 39-40

A) Joseph's righteous success in Potipher's house leads to job loss and imprisonment

39:1-6) Lord as with Joseph, so he succeeded, Potiphar noticed, gave responsibility, profited

7-11) Potiphar's wife lusted, daily propositioned but Joseph wouldn't sin against God

 - Gen 13:13, God sees men of Sodom wicked, sinned greatly against the LORD

 - Gen 20: 6, God brings to our conscience, keeps us from sinning against him

 - 2 Samuel 12:13, We confess our sin against God and God takes away our sin

12-18) She tried to force him but he ran away, she then accused him of misconduct

- Joseph chose the righteous path (Matthew 5:9-11)

B) Joseph's prison experience is bearable through God's divine intervention

19-23) Potiphar furious, imprisoned Joseph but Lord was with him in prison, faithful love - caused everything succeeded

40:1-4) Chief cup-bearer, & bread maker imprisoned for a time under Joseph

5-8) both had upsetting dreams, Jospeph says dream interpretation is God's business

9-15) cup-bearer, grapevine, three branches (days), clusters of grape in cup - in Pharaoh's hand (freedom), remember me, I was kidnapped

 - This is my blood of the new covenant

16-19) baker, three baskets (days) of pastries on my head, for Pharaoh (death on pole) but birds came and ate them (flesh)

 - This is my body, do this in remembrance of me 

 - Three Days, a recurring theme in the Bible for changing your heart

20-23) Pharaoh's birthday was three days later, Joseph's prediction true but Cup-bearer forgot him

God's presence comforts us, reminding us of His promises, strengthening us by His word.

  • My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.  Psalm 119:50
  • “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”  - John 16:33
  • And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. - Romans 8:28-29
  • For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. - 2 Corinthians 4:17 
  • ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” - Revelation 21:4
