Being "in the Spirit" an audience of one

This week in BSF we're studying Revelation 21:9-22:5, where John describes himself as being "in the Spirit" We see this is when a person receives a clear message from God. "The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue." 2 Samuel 23:2

Revelation 1:10-20, 4:1-11, 17:1-6, 21:9-14

  • Lord's Day (resurrection Sunday), worshiping "in the Spirit". Suddenly, heard a voice from behind like a trumpet blast with instructions to write his vision for seven specific churches. He sees Jesus and these churches, what is happening now and will happen in the future. (Rev 1:10-20)
  • Door standing open in heaven, Jesus says come up here and instantly "in the Spirit" seeing all heaven rejoicing in perfect harmony "Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty-the One who always was, who is, and who is still to come" Lord our God...Created all things" (three most prominent attributes Holy, Creator, Lord) (Rev 4:1-11)
  • One of seven angels who poured bowls of wrath, took him "in the Spirit" to see the great prostitute of Babylon riding the beast with seven heads, ten horns, blasphemies against God written over it, she held obscenities and impurities of her immorality in her hand, drunk with blood of God's holy people, witnesses for Jesus. (Rev 17:1-6)
  • One of the seven angels who held seven bowls containing seven last plagues, took him "in the Spirit" to se the bride, the wife of the Lamb. Holy city Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. Twelve foundation stones for the wall written names of apostles of the Lamb. (Rev 21:9-14)

The term "in the Spirit" is also found in 26 other New Testament passages and 1 in the Old Testament, Ezekiel 37:1 which talks about the vision of the valley of dry bones, "The hand of the Lord was upon me, and He brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones." Before this Ezekiel received the word of the Lord (Ezekiel 36:16) for his name's sake (v22)

"I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean from all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols I will cleanse you. And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers, and you shall be my people, and I will be your God. And I will deliver you from all your uncleannesses. And I will summon the grain and make it abundant and lay no famine upon you. I will make the fruit of the tree and the increase of the field abundant, that you may never again suffer the disgrace of famine among the nations. Then you will remember your evil ways, and your deeds that were not good, and you will loathe yourselves for your iniquities and your abominations. It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel. (the gift of repentance)

“Thus says the Lord God: On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be rebuilt. And the land that was desolate shall be tilled, instead of being the desolation that it was in the sight of all who passed by. And they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden, and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ Then the nations that are left all around you shall know that I am the Lord; I have rebuilt the ruined places and replanted that which was desolate. I am the Lord; I have spoken, and I will do it." Ezekiel 36:25-36

Jesus describes David as being "in the Spirit" when he wrote the psalm about the Christ, the son of David (Matthew 22:42-44, Acts 2:34, 35; Heb. 1:13; Cited from Ps. 110:1; [1 Cor. 15:25; Heb. 10:13]

Zechariah was informed about his son before he was born, that John the Baptist would be "in the spirit and power of Elijah - to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous - to make ready a people prepared for the Lord' Luke 1:16-18, Mal 4:5,6, Mt 3:3, Ge 15:8, Ge 17:17

Simeon, righteous, devout had the Holy Spirit on him, that before he died he'd see the Lord's Christ. "in the Spirit" he held Jesus and said, "my eyes have seen your salvation, prepared in presence of all peoples, light for revelation to Gentiles, glory to your people Israel." Luke 3:22-35, 9:20, 23:35, 1 Samuel 24:6

Jesus said the time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father "in the Spirit" and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship "in the Spirit" and in truth. John 4:23-24

Paul had resolved "in the Spirit" his travel plans (Acts 19:21), not with people in person but "in the Spirit" (1 Cor 5:3), Paul prayed in the Spirit and sand in the Spirit (1 Cor 14:15), We say Jesus is Lord when speaking "in the Spirit" (1 Cor 12:3), when speaking in tongues to God one utters mysteries "in the Spirit" (1 Cor 14:2) we praise God in the Spirit (1 Cor 14:16)

We start our new lives in the Spirit but battle the flesh (Galatians 3:3). But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit. Romans 7:6, We live in the Spirit of God, not by our flesh but as God's adopted children.   Romans 8:1-17, "For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children. And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. Romans 8:16-17 So we make every effort to keep ourselves united "in the Spirit" binding together with peace (Eph 4:3), we are renewed in the spirit of our minds (Eph 4:23), praying "in the Spirit" on all occasions for all kinds of prayer and requests (Eph 6:18).

Imitating Christ humility in the Spirit by encouraging one another in love, tender hearted compassion. (Philippians 2) love in the Spirit (Colossians 1:8), alive in the Spirit (1 Peter 3:18,4:6
