My brother blessed me with this text. 1 Peter 5:10, Rev 21:4
In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.”
He's enjoying the NLT Bible I gave him and seeing the value of reading a few paragraphs before and after. We got to talk about 1 Cor 13 "the love chapter" but then relate that too the 1 Cor 12, the gifts given to serve one another in the unity of God's love.
I've been especially blessed thinking about Revelation of the church, a kingdom of priests (Rev 1:6, 5:10, 22:5-6)
Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this...There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. 1 Cor 12:1,4-6
- A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Cor 12:7
- ...you should earnestly desire the most helpful gifts. But now let me show you a way of life that is best of all. 1 Cor 12:31
Then starts 1 Cor 13, with a series of "if I could _______ (or had a gift)", "but didn’t love others" (it would be worthless)
What is Love? "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 1 Cor 13:4-7"
- Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. 1 Cor 13:13
- Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives 1 Cor 14:1
- And the same is true for you. Since you are so eager to have the special abilities the Spirit gives, seek those that will strengthen the whole church. 1 Cor 14:12
- ... when you meet together...everything that is done must strengthen all of you. 1 Cor 14:26
