Recently, I had a meaningful conversation with someone who had been deeply hurt by Christians in the past. We spoke honestly, listened carefully, and left the conversation mutually edified. That moment reminded me of a simple biblical truth that is often overlooked.
- Spiritual gifts are not given to win arguments.
- They are given to build people.
Scripture consistently teaches that the evidence of spiritual maturity is not volume, knowledge, or spiritual display. The evidence is "faith expressing itself in love," actions that build people up. Edification is the quiet work of God’s grace through humble, intentional words offered in love.
At its core, to edify means to strengthen, restore, encourage, and promote spiritual growth. The Bible applies this principle across personal conversations, public proclamation, and the gathered church.
1. The Purpose of Edification in God’s Design
The New Testament makes it unmistakably clear that spiritual gifts exist for one purpose.
1 Corinthians 14:26 ESV
“What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up.”
Every contribution in the body of Christ is measured by a single question.
Does this build others up?
Ephesians 4:12 ESV
“To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.”
Spiritual maturity is not self-focused. It is outward-facing. God equips believers so they can strengthen others.
Ephesians 4:16 ESV
“From whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
Growth happens when every part works in love. Not in pressure. Not in force. In love.
2. Edification Is a Posture Toward All People
Edification is not limited to formal worship settings. It governs how believers relate to every person they encounter.
Romans 15:2 ESV
“Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.”
Romans 14:19 ESV
“So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding.”
Building up others is an intentional pursuit. It requires restraint, empathy, and discernment.
Ephesians 4:29 ESV
*“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.”
