The doctrine of Election in the context of Romans Biblical themes

I love how the Biblical Theme Map is not intended to be a map of systematic theology. It is a map of Paul's argument in Romans. Its purpose is to help translators, teachers, and reviewers preserve the flow of thought that Paul develops chapter by chapter. Within that flow, election is an important theme in Romans 9 through 11, but it is not presented as an isolated doctrine. Rather, it functions as one component of a much larger biblical story about God's faithfulness to His covenant promises, His mercy, His purpose in history, and the inclusion of both Jews and Gentiles in Christ.

The difference between a doctrine and a biblical theme

  • A doctrine is a theological truth that is developed from the whole counsel of Scripture. It gathers together everything the Bible teaches about a subject.
  • A biblical theme traces how an inspired author develops one major idea through a particular book or section of Scripture.

If we use only the Bible and avoid later theological systems, the doctrine of election is presented as God's sovereign choice to accomplish His purposes in history and salvation. Scripture uses election for nations, individuals, kings, priests, apostles, and believers. The Bible emphasizes both God's initiative and humanity's responsibility without attempting to resolve every tension.

The Bible affirms all of these truths:

  • God chooses people according to His purpose (Deut. 7:6-8; Eph. 1:4-5).
  • Election originates in God's grace, not human merit (Rom. 11:5-6; 2 Tim. 1:9).
  • Christ is God's Chosen One, and believers are chosen in Him (Isa. 42:1; Eph. 1:4).
  • Election is connected with foreknowledge (Rom. 8:29-30; 1 Pet. 1:1-2).
  • God commands everyone to repent and believe (Acts 17:30; Rom. 10:9-13).
  • The gospel invitation is genuinely extended to all (Isa. 55:1; Rev. 22:17).
  • God desires people to repent rather than perish (Ezek. 18:23; 1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Pet. 3:9).
  • People are responsible for rejecting God (John 5:40; Matt. 23:37).
  • Salvation is entirely by grace and excludes boasting (Eph. 2:8-9; 1 Cor. 1:26-31).
  • Election leads to holiness, service, worship, and mission, not complacency (Eph. 1:4; 1 Pet. 2:9; 2 Pet. 1:10).

When read on its own terms, the Bible presents election as a divine work that magnifies God's grace while simultaneously calling every person to repent, believe the gospel, and persevere in faithful obedience. Scripture affirms both God's sovereign initiative and humanity's responsibility without explaining every aspect of how those truths fit together.

Here is what the Bible itself teaches.

1. God elects people according to His own purpose

Election begins with God, not with human merit.

Deuteronomy 7:6-8

"The LORD your God has chosen you... not because you were more in number... but because the LORD loves you."

Israel was chosen because of God's love and covenant, not because of worthiness.

Isaiah 41:8-9

"Israel, My servant, Jacob whom I have chosen..."

John 15:16

Jesus told His disciples:

"You did not choose Me, but I chose you."

Ephesians 1:4-5

God

"chose us in Him before the foundation of the world... having predestined us to adoption."

The emphasis is on God's initiative.

2. Election has a purpose

God never chooses people merely to give them privilege. He chooses them for service, holiness, and blessing others.

Israel

Genesis 12:1-3

Abraham was chosen so

"all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

Believers

Ephesians 1:4

"...that we should be holy and blameless."

1 Peter 2:9

"You are a chosen race... that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him."

Election always carries mission.

3. Christ is God's Chosen One

Election is centered first in Jesus.

Isaiah 42:1

"My chosen one in whom My soul delights."

Luke 9:35

"This is My Son, My Chosen One."

Believers are repeatedly described as chosen in Christ rather than apart from Him.

Ephesians 1:4

"He chose us in Him."

4. Believers are called "the elect"

The New Testament repeatedly uses this language.

Romans 8:33

"Who shall bring any charge against God's elect?"

Colossians 3:12

"As God's chosen ones..."

Titus 1:1

"For the faith of God's elect."

2 Timothy 2:10

"For the sake of the elect."

5. Election is connected with foreknowledge

The Bible joins election with God's foreknowledge.

Romans 8:29-30

"Those whom He foreknew He also predestined..."

1 Peter 1:1-2

Believers are

"chosen according to the foreknowledge of God."

The text does not define exactly how foreknowledge relates to election. It simply states both.

6. Election is described as gracious

Scripture contrasts election with human works.

Romans 11:5-6

"A remnant chosen by grace... if by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works."

2 Timothy 1:9

God

"saved us... not because of our works but because of His own purpose and grace."

7. People are still called to believe

Although God elects, Scripture continually commands people to repent and believe.

John 3:16

"Whoever believes..."

Acts 17:30

"God commands all people everywhere to repent."

Romans 10:9-13

"Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

The Bible never uses election as a reason not to evangelize.

8. The Gospel is offered to everyone

God sincerely invites all people.

Isaiah 55:1

"Come, everyone who thirsts."

Matthew 11:28

"Come to Me, all..."

John 7:37

"If anyone thirsts..."

Revelation 22:17

"Whoever wishes, let him take the water of life freely."

9. God desires people to be saved

Several passages reveal God's compassionate desire.

Ezekiel 18:23

"Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked?... rather that he should turn and live."

Ezekiel 33:11

"I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked."

1 Timothy 2:3-4

God

"desires all people to be saved."

2 Peter 3:9

God is

"not wishing that any should perish but that all should reach repentance."

10. Some reject God's gracious invitation

The Bible clearly teaches human responsibility.

John 5:40

"You refuse to come to Me."

Matthew 23:37

Jesus says,

"I wanted... but you were unwilling."

Acts 7:51

"You always resist the Holy Spirit."

11. Faith itself is presented as God's work

Several passages attribute salvation entirely to God's grace.

John 6:37

"All that the Father gives Me will come to Me."

John 6:44

"No one can come unless the Father draws him."

John 6:65

"Unless it has been granted him by the Father."

Philippians 1:29

"It has been granted to you to believe."

Ephesians 2:8-9

"By grace you have been saved through faith... it is the gift of God."

12. People are urged to make their election evident

Election is never presented as permission for careless living.

2 Peter 1:10

"Be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election."

The surrounding verses describe growth in virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and love.

13. Election should produce humility

Scripture consistently removes boasting.

1 Corinthians 1:26-31

God chooses what is weak so

"that no human being might boast."

Romans 3:27

"Boasting is excluded."

14. Election motivates evangelism

Paul believed both God's election and the necessity of preaching.

Acts 18:9-10

God tells Paul,

"I have many people in this city."

Paul continues preaching.

2 Timothy 2:10

"I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain salvation."

Romans 10:14-17

People believe through hearing the gospel.
