Everything Flipped Upside Down

 Part I was about love. Part II was about the heart. This part is where it gets uncomfortable.

These four commands go against almost everything we are taught. They cost something real. They make you look weak to people who are keeping score.

Jesus taught them anyway.

9. Do Not Get Even

Matthew 5:38-39

The old rule was an eye for an eye. That rule was actually mercy.

It kept revenge from growing. If someone knocked out your tooth, you could not burn down their house. The punishment had to match the crime.

Jesus went further. Do not fight back at all. If someone slaps you on the right cheek, turn the other one too.

The world says: Do not let anyone push you around. Make them pay.

But God's Word says: Let it go. The insult does not get to control you.

This is not about letting someone hurt you or your family. It is about the small daily hits. The rude email. The cheap shot in a meeting. The relative who always has a comment.

You do not have to return fire. That is freedom.

10. Give More Than They Ask

Matthew 5:40-42

Jesus kept going, and each example got harder.

If someone sues you for your shirt, hand over your coat too. If a soldier forces you to carry his gear one mile, go two. If someone asks to borrow, do not turn away.

That second mile is the key. The first mile was the law. The second mile was a gift, and it was yours to give.

The world says: Do the minimum. Protect what is yours.

But God's Word says: Give past the line. Surprise people.

Being generous is more than money. It is time. Patience. A second chance. Credit you could have kept for yourself.

11. Love the People Who Hurt You

Matthew 5:43-45; Luke 6:35-36

This is the hardest command in the whole study.

People had been taught to love their neighbor and hate their enemy. Jesus told them to love their enemies and pray for the people who persecute them.

Then he gave the reason. That is what God is like. He sends sunshine and rain on good people and bad people alike. Luke says he is kind even to people who are ungrateful and wicked (Luke 6:35).

The world says: They do not deserve it after what they did.

But God's Word says: Neither did you, and God loved you anyway.

Start with prayer. It is very hard to pray for someone every day and still hate them. Something shifts. Usually in you first.

12. Serve. Do Not Climb.

John 13:14-15; Matthew 23:8-12

Jesus washed his friends' feet. That was a servant's job, and everyone in the room knew it.

Then he told them to do the same for each other. He said he gave them an example to follow.

In Matthew, he warned against loving titles and honor. He told them the greatest among them must be a servant. Anyone who lifts himself up will be brought low. Anyone who lowers himself will be lifted up.

The world says: Build your brand. Get the title. Be somebody.

But God's Word says: Grab a towel. God handles the honor.

Look for the job nobody wants. Do it without telling anyone. That is the pattern he showed us on his last night.

Where This Leaves Us

None of this makes sense unless you believe God is in charge of the outcome.

You can stop fighting back because God will handle justice. You can give without limits because God is your supply. You can love an enemy because God loved you first. You can serve without a title because God sees you.

Take God out of it and these commands are foolish. Put God back in and they are the only way to live free.

Try this week: Pick one person who has hurt you. Pray for them by name every day for seven days. Ask God to bless them.

Ask yourself: Am I keeping score with anyone right now? What would it take to put the scorecard down?
