Israelites learn God’s requirements for atonement and lifelong sanctification

AIM: Truly being in God’s presents requires atonement for sin, repentance and lifelong sanctification

A) Once the Tabernacle was complete Lord instructs Moses about Burnt, Grain and Fellowship Offerings
(1:1-2) Lord spoke to Moses from Tent of Meeting, speak to Israelites about offerings to Lord
(3-17) Burnt offering: male without defect, heard must be made acceptable while flock already is, even birds, atonement, sprinkle blood, 100% offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord (6:8-13) fire never goes out
(2:1-16) Grain offering: fine flour, oil, incense, no yeast (dead air, popover), add salt of covenant - portion for Lord, rest for priest most Holy, raw, baked or fried (6:14-18) frankincense (NLT) like sin, guilt this is most holy – touch become holy (6:19-23) Ordination offering, sliced bread burnt completely not eaten
(3:1-17) Fellowship offering: same as burnt except no birds, only for food (no fat, innards or blood) (7:11-17) (Macaroni Grill bread) yeast, thanksgiving, 1 day/no left overs, vow, freewill, (7:18-27) food safety violation/cut off from their people (7:28-36) priests, presented to serve the Lord, anointed – priests perpetual share generations
Principle: Repentance is possible through God’s intercessor and our free will
Application: Have I misunderstood the Gospel of Jesus Christ? Do I know with 100% certainty that God has given me his Holy Spirit, that I’m forgiven because of Jesus’s perfect life, sacrificial death and resurrection. That the faith I have has been given to me by God and nothing I can do or say will ever separate me from the eternal love of our God who saves us? What evidence shows that I’ve traded my sinful life for the Holy life God has given me?

B) Lord instructs that sin is doing what the Lord forbids, brings guilt and requires confession
(4:1-2) Sin Offering: Unintentional sin, doing what is forbidden by Lord’s commands (6:24-30) to priest: this is a most holy offering, slaughtered in the Lord presents, priest must eat a portion unless it’s blood used for purification\atonement
(3-12) If priest sins
(13-21) whole community sins
(22-26) leader sins
(27-35) Member of community sins
(5:1-13) Examples of unintentional sins, not speaking up/yet responsible, accidental contact/yet guilty, any guilt - must be confessed in what way person sinned, bring offering, priest makes atonement, forgiven
(5:14-19) Guilt offering: your own, paid, priest purify you making you right with Lord, forgiven (7:1-10) place burnt offering, food same law as Sin offering applies belongs to priest family
(6:1-7) Example of guilt: sin against associate, unfaithful to Lord, cheat, steal, fraud, lie, swearing falsely,
(5-7) restitution: amount + 20% + perfect Ram value,
(8-23) Burnt, Grain, grain/ordination, sin, guilt offering details (7:37-38)
Principle: Doing what is forbidden by God is sin whether you meant it or not.
Application: What sin have you committed today? Praise God if you notice sin in your life because guilt is a blessing that can lead you to repentance, confession and stronger faith.  Jesus preached “repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near” and James tells us that “if we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive us, yet if we claim to have no sin – our conscious is seared and the truth is not in us”. If you can’t think of the last time you have sinned, ask God to reveal to you anything that doesn’t please Him. The Hebrews tells us that Jesus is our high priest, he is alive today and intercedes on our behalf and ever believer has been given the Holy Spirit of God in our hearts and Peter tells us we are all priests.

C) Aaron and Sons become lifelong priests by ordination, following the Lord’s decrees
Aaron and Sons become priests by sin offering, sacred garments, obedient waiting and follow through
(8:1-9) Priest Ordination:  Sin offering, whole community, washed, dressed (sacred garments: runic, sash around waist, robe, ephod, sash, chest piece, Urim, Thummin inside,  turban gold medallion – badge of holiness (NLT) sacred emblem (NIV) – see Ephesians armor of God
(10-36) Moses did all the offering rituals, Aaron and Sons ate then burned leftovers, stayed at the entrance of Tabernacle for 7 days, commanded by Lord to purify them, make right with him
(9:1-21) Moses instructs, Aaron and Sons perform Sin offering, Burnt offering and Grain offering to purify selves and people before the Lord
(22-24) After that Moses and Aaron tabernacle, blessed people, glory of Lord appeared to whole community, fire blazed from Lord’s presents consumed burnt offering resulting in shouts of joy and face down worship
10:1-7) Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu, short-cut-cheaper fire, disobeyed and fire blazed from Lord’s presents and they died, priest not permitted to mourn, stay at entrance of Tabernacle (Aaron, Eleazar, Ithamar)
(8-20) Priestly conduct: Never drink before Tabernacle, distinguish between sacred/common, clean/unclean, teach decrees of Lord, eat sin/purify/make right people with Lord
Principle: God’s people are called to be holy, discerning teachers and bring others into right relationship with the Lord.
Application: Jesus summarized these laws by saying Love the Lord your God with all heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as yourself, the natural progression of that comes with Jesus last instruction: make disciples teaching them to obey everything I’ve taught you, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Christians are called to the same level of priestly holiness, the difference is the sacrifice was made by God’s son on our behalf and it was perfect, once and for all.

Conclusion:

We have been in a time of Grace since Jesus resurrected into heaven after his death on the cross. This is where the term Grace period comes from and as you know a grace period is limited. The Gospel that God has given us requires a personal response to accept Jesus atoning sacrifice on the cross for your behalf and when you confess your sin and believe in God the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, you will be saved to eternal life. If you’ve never understood God’s plan of redemption for you personally would you pray in agreement with God for your sin, would you see Jesus on the Cross his body broken for you and his blood spilled for the forgiveness of your personal transgression. Will you trade your sinful life for a new holy life in Jesus Christ today. Let’s pray.
