Gospel Inspires Forgiveness

Col 3:12-14
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.

Chosen, election, from to gather
- in spite of us, not because of what we've done
- every event leading you to Jesus, not chance or mistake
- orchestrated everyone of them to be holy

God's love because of Himself, not our worth?

Reminds me of,  God is sad at our rejection not because of his loss, but our loss.

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with

tenderhearted mercy, kindness,
- goodness, generosity
humility (proper assessment of self, that I need God),
gentleness (meanness, power under control - gentle when you don't have to be, give up right to be right, give up right to win), and
patience.
-  putting up with exasperating conduct of others, without flying into a rage
- long-suffering
- not easily offended, not quick to draw conclusions

Application
Understanding God's grace results in living graciously towards other people

Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you.
- forgiveness mostly means "cut someone loose"
- here forgiveness means, "to treat people graciously "
- be ready to be gracious, not grumpy
- God is against bitterness and holding grudges

Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.
- Love 1 Cor 13
- John 13 :35, by this know your my disciple
- Love is endless forgiveness

Forgiveness is misunderstood in our culture
- forgetting it
- pretend not hurt
- excuse bad behavior
- etc

3 motivations for forgiveness
- understanding God's extravagant Grace
- understanding the role of a gracious lifestyle (tenderness, kindness to others, represents God to them)
- understanding the origin of Grace

Remember, the Lord forgave you,

Instead of thinking about what another did to me, think about what God has done for me

Our forgiveness of others, ties to the cross of Jesus.
