Love God with a cut heart

I was reading about how God’s covenant with his people requires faithfulness 1Ki 2:3-4 See also Ex 19:5; Dt 5:32-33; Dt 10:12-13; Dt 29:9; Isa 1:26

Specifically Dt 10:12-22
“Now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require from you,

  • fear the Lord your God
  • to walk in all His ways AND love Him,
  • AND to serve the Lord your God with
    • all your heart and with all your soul,
    • and to keep the Lord’s commandments and His statutes
which I am commanding you today for your good?

Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the highest heavens, the earth and all that is in it. Yet on your fathers did the Lord set His affection to love them, and He chose their descendants after them, even you above all peoples, as it is this day.

So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer. For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God

  • who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.
  • He executes justice for the orphan and the widow,
  • and shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.
So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him (with all your heart and soul v12-13)/(Flesh/Spirit/Soul Heb 4:12), and you shall swear by His name (Jesus corrected understanding of this on Sermon on the Mount). He is your praise and He is your God, who has done these great and awesome things for you which your eyes have seen. (Look at the sparrow, lilies of the field)
Application: What great and awesome things have your eyes seen the Lord do? Who will you tell about this.

Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.
Application: see community and family in terms of generations.

circumcise heart
So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer.

Deuteronomy 30:6 “Moreover the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.

Joshua 5:1 [ Israel Is Circumcised ] Now it came about when all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard how the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the sons of Israel until they had crossed, that their hearts melted, and there was no spirit in them any longer because of the sons of Israel.

Jeremiah 4:4 “Circumcise yourselves to the Lord And remove the foreskins of your heart, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Or else My wrath will go forth like fire And burn with none to quench it, Because of the evil of your deeds.”

Cut heart:
Jeremiah 9:26 Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.”

Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.
