Holiness is freeing; evidence is a joy and peace at heart (Isaiah 35:8-10)

Yesterday with SALT at work we watched and discussed session 5 of Extraordinary (John Bevere). The topic was holiness with a mind-bending, faith-stretching presentation packed with scripture on "why aren't we teaching this in our churches" The guiding verse of the series:

Ephesians 3:8-10 The Message (MSG)
8-10 And so here I am, preaching and writing about things that are way over my head, the inexhaustible riches and generosity of Christ. My task is to bring out in the open and make plain what God, who created all this in the first place, has been doing in secret and behind the scenes all along. Through followers of Jesus like yourselves gathered in churches, this extraordinary plan of God is becoming known and talked about even among the angels!
Holiness has two parts, Justification, and sanctification. Justification is immediate when we first believe and repent. Sanctification is progressive, God working in our hearts and our responsive growth.

God is pleased when we live an Extraordinary life
- 2 Peter 1:3, everything we need to please God by God's own power (grace)

Fruit of Grace is holiness, ideas why people don't like "holiness"
- preachers abuse people with (outward forms - rather than personal holiness) - legalism. empty religion preventing people from seeing Christ
- false external holiness (Mark 7:1-23) - example: a man may never "cheat" but lusts after every woman in view.
 - Don't want to place hurdle on Gospel. But without holiness we won't see God (Matt 5:8 - pure heart, 1 John 3:2 see him face to face, not possible before Ex 33:20), overcomers will see God's face (Rev).

Grace through faith: This life and the next (2 Cor 3:17-18) changed from glory to glory as we behold him
- information without transformation is a recipe for getting religious Mark 7:1-23
- Jesus is coming back for a holy people, unblemished (Eph 1:4,5:27) - Ephesians bookends with holiness, BeRich!
- 1 Thes 4:1-3, we urge you to live in a way that pleases God, do this more and more
- be holy, keep clear of ALL sexual sin
- sexual impurity shows the lacks of holiness

Abound more and more, flee from it.
Romans 1:28,32 (unrighteousness, sexual immorality - approving of it)
- leaders (fathers, husbands, brothers) need to take heed, overlooking is actually condoning it.

Believers going against Christ given nature - freed

1 Thes 4:6-8
- strongly warns, rejecting this teaching is rejecting God
- catch, then cleaned

1 Cor 10:1-12 msg, they experience God's grace - didn't mean anything because they were defeated. And God was not pleased.  Discontent, don't repeat their mistakes. They're paralleled. Don't be deceived into living a powerless life.
Acts 15: 28-29, eating and drinking, sexual immorality
1 Peter 1:14-16, you must be holy in everything you do.

Holy hagios (greek)
Separation, consecration, sharing in his purity
Jesus dominated the atmosphere, light shines greater than darkness

Grace - serve God acceptably (Godly fear, walk away from sin) 2 Cor 6:1 - beg you to let God's grace not be wasted, 2 Cor 7:1, cleans ourselves from all filthiness of flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the love and fear of God

Fear of the Lord is critically important.

Heb 12:14-15, pursue holiness looking carefully so that no one falls short of the glory of God (fire the gun UP) - not fire the gun at the enemy. Spiritual enemy = lust, not physical (i.e., woman).

Grace empowers us. Ability to live as Jesus lives.

Isaiah 35:8-10: highway (higher way, the WAY, the truth, the life John 14:6-9) to holiness. Rescued will travel this way.
2 Peter 1:9-10, failure is blindness, short-sighted, God cleaned them.

Isaiah 35:8-10 The Message (MSG)
8-10 There will be a highway
    called the Holy Road.
No one rude or rebellious
    is permitted on this road.
It’s for God’s people exclusively—
impossible to get lost on this road.
Not even fools can get lost on it.
No lions on this road,
    no dangerous wild animals—
Nothing and no one dangerous or threatening.
Only the redeemed will walk on it.
The people God has ransomed
will come back on this road.
They’ll sing as they make their way home to Zion,
unfading halos of joy encircling their heads,
Welcomed home with gifts of joy and gladness
as all sorrows and sighs scurry into the night.
