AIM: Obedience is learned in testing, suffering
Focus Verses:

Hebrews 4:14-5:10
A) Tested in Weakness: Jesus Son of God, superior High Priest
4:14) Jesus entered heaven as High Priest, Son of God, we firm in the belief
15) he understands our weaknesses, same testing yet didn't sin
16) Application: let us come boldly to throne of gracious God, mercy and grace when we need it most
B) Gentle with Others: All High Priests are men to represent people to God
5:1) Every high priest chosen to represent others in dealing with God, present gifts, sacrifices for sins
2) He's able to deal gently with ignorant and wayward people because he is subject to same weaknesses
3) That's why he must offer sacrifices for personal sins and those of others
4) Not of his own, but called by God as Aaron was
C) Qualified Obedience: Called by God as Priest forever in the order of Melchizedek
5-6) Christ made no assumption but was chosen when God said to him
"You are my Son, Today I have become your Father", "You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek"
7) on earth Jesus offered prayers and pleadings, crying, tears God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God
8) Even though Jesus was God's Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered
9) In this way, God qualified him perfect High Priest - became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him.
Jesus teaches love precedes obedience and the indwelling Holy Spirit
Suffering in Christ, with Holy Spirit brings unfathomable hope (Romans 8:17-30)
10) God designated him to be a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek. Heb 5:7-10
