I'm reading Asking the Right Questions by Matthew S Harmon. The third chapter is called "Reading the Bible as Jesus did. Here are the highlights:
The Old Testament is about Jesus (John 5:39, John 5:46)
Jesus knew this and explained it to his disciples after the resurrection (Luke 24:25-27,44,45,46-49).
Lens to view scripture through
The Old Testament is about Jesus (John 5:39, John 5:46)
Jesus knew this and explained it to his disciples after the resurrection (Luke 24:25-27,44,45,46-49).
Lens to view scripture through
- When reading we should keep in mind the main point is Jesus Christ
- Reading and understanding the Bible requires help from God
- All scripture points to what Christ has done for us or our need for him
- The center is the death and resurrection of Christ and the call for all nations to turn away from sin and trust Jesus
Guiding principles
- God's promises relay upon the person and work of Jesus (2 Cor 1:20)
- God's plan of salvation and his kingdom is for everyone yet some do not accept this (John 3:16-21). Yet we faithfully bring truth to people 2 Cor 4:13-18. They won't know unless someone tells them (Faith comes by hearing the word about Christ (Romans 10:14-21)
- God's sovereignty is shown in correspondence, Moses and Jesus (Moses life is preserved by God for His eternal purpose), our lives and theirs
- As we read with faith our understanding will deepen and grow
