Explaining sin in simple, easy to understand terms

"I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” - Luke 5:32

Dream of being interviewed by a newspaper about SALT and sharing faith at work with diverse people. How would I explain the Biblical concept of sin in a way that any person regardless of background could immediately relate to? I thought about this as the effect sin has on us personally.

Sin causes a deep sense of loneliness, a pang of hunger in our inner being. People have called this the "God-shaped hole" because only God can fill it. We try and fill it with food, fun, work, and relationships but after that, we have a feeling of there must be more to life than this.
Sin also causes trouble in the way we relate to the world around us. We feel a sense of not measuring up and not hitting the mark. This shows up as "I know I should, but..." Have you ever known the right thing to do, yet didn't do it? This is another effect sin has on us, a sense of shame for not being our best.
Feelings of loneliness and being ashamed for not measuring up make us susceptible to "try anything." This includes exploring what we know is wrong which leads to guilt, pain, and suffering. We feel guilty because we knew better. We feel more ashamed that we fell into a trap and are left with regret.

Yet the good news of Jesus Christ is that God knows you completely (Psalm 139) and he taught about those who understand would be healed and saved:
Parables of Jesus are primarily about Salvation
