Why basic truth matters (doctrine)

I had a great meeting last night lead by BSFonline.org (Jeannie and Brenda Prentis) learning how to give a five-minute doctrine discussion. In the children's program, we called this "basic truths of the Christian faith." Doctrine in the Christian faith is a word that is backed with Biblical truth. Our goal is to share where in God's word these truths come from. Then have an interactive discussion on the impact of our belief in these truths and impact of our unbelief or misunderstanding. We end with a review/challenge and reaffirm doctrinal truth.

Bridge sentence linking current passage to doctrine. Define the doctrine (2 min), then engage in the discussion & application (2 min). Provide a recap.

When Christians don't know basic teaching they will have no ability to distinguish truth from error and be deceived into living fruitless lives (Eph 4:14, 2 Cor 11:3, Heb 13:9, Jude 1:12)

Without basic truths, they stay as children (Matthew 18:2-4) but in a negative sense  of being childish and immature (1 Corinthians 3:1; 1 Corinthians 13:11; Galatians 4:1; Galatians 4:3; Hebrews 5:13)

When Christians have a solid foundation, they mature, use talents; contributing to the kingdom of God. (Heb 5:14, Romans 14:1, 1 Cor 2:6, Eph 4:13, 1 Tim 4:7, Heb 6:1)

  • Romans 16:25-26—Noemi, Steven shared Be established by the gospel, proclamation from Jesus. It is God's hidden mystery.
  • 2 Timothy 1:13—Ben, Brenda, Sound teaching. Pattern of wholesome teaching. Shaped by faith and love in Christ Jesus.
  • 2 Timothy 2:15—Eugene, Do your best to tech what you are entrusted with
  • Titus 1:9, 2:1 – Susan, Reena shared hold firm, trustworthy, encourage, refute, teach appropriately. Exhortation, Biblical teaching.
