An audience of one

My mom had the email signature, "for an audience of one" and today I was reading Overcoming the Pastoral Pandemic that said, "We must pray for our church leaders to 'live for an audience of one,' seeking to please Christ alone (2 Corinthians 5:9)" The article prompts us to pray for the holiness of our leaders and fellow workers. Protection against ambition, distraction, impurity, and comparison. To let the grace of God abound in their weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9-10).

Titus 2:11-12 promises, “But the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.”

Some scriptures came to mind as I pondered these things

  • If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, My servant will be as well. If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. John 12:26
  • But now you are free from the power of sin and have become slaves of God. Now you do those things that lead to holiness and result in eternal life. Rom 6:22
  • For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body. - 2 Cor 5:7-10
  • For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord, but also in the eyes of men. - 2 Cor 8:21
  • For whoever serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men. - Rom 14:18
  • Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another. Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer Rom 12:10-12
Lord, help us to live pure and holy lives abiding in you. Go before us and guide us so we can see your glory. Give us the grace to do the work giving to us and help us to honor our coworkers today. Build our faith so we are pleasing to you. Amen.
