Opportunities are like sunrises. If you wait too long, you miss them

 Reading, Two Eternally Significant Questions You Must Answer by Daniel Henderson. The pastor who I went to see at church with my friend Scott and the "girl in his basement" (who I married :).

The title for this post was a quote from William Arthur Ward. Other maxims include;

  • The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.
  • A warm smile is the universal language of kindness.
  • The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails. (I previous heard this as "a leader adjusts the sails")
Growth Mindset, not a fixed mindset - practice makes progress, schedule growth in your calendar
 - When I worked at Xerox in 1999 I suggested to everyone that they should spend 20% of their time learning something that will make them better at their job - that's 8 out of 40 hours. It was during a training I gave on "the beautiful 'IF'" - that was the key function in Excel that enabled me to automate billing.
Giving - teachers get to learn it twice, learning and growth with intention to give - you actually get more
 - Giving is so much more than money, a smile is the universal language of kindness.
Gratitude - if you don't appreciate what you have now, how will you appreciate what you'll get? Success builds on success, you must appreciate the success you already have.
 - Need help? What would change in you if the only things you'd have tomorrow are the things you express gratitude for today?
Grit - Grit is a muscle, and challenge leads to change. post-traumatic growth
 - To build grit, put yourself in uncomfortable positions
