Jesus teaches how the message of His Kingdom is received (Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23)

A) Jesus teaches how the message of His Kingdom is received with a natural illustration Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

  • The sower: Messenger of God's word (22)
  • The seed: Message about the Kingdom (19)
  • The soil along the path: Anyone who hear but don't understand the message
  • The birds that snatch the seed: evil one has taken away what was sown in the heart
  • The rocky soil: Someone who hears the message with joy but quickly fall away in trouble or persecution.
  • The thorny soil: Someone who hear the message but worry, the deceitfulness of wealth make them unfruitful
  • The good soil: Someone who hears, understands, AND produces a crop yielding 100,60,30 times what was sown
  • Luke 8:15 "a noble and good heart" is the only one that accomplishes the purpose of the seed
"We do heart work, not homework", we pray to God for a heart that understands and receptivity (faith) to wholeheartedly say yes.

All of the good seed produced fruit, but the quantity of fruit varied. Giftedness, opportunity, obedience, and passion are factors that might contribute to different levels of fruitfulness in believers. John 15:5: As branches remain or abide in the vine, they bear fruit. How deeply we depend on the Lord is a factor in fruitfulness. Philippians 2:12-13: God works within His children to give them the “will” or desire and the power to act to
fulfill His good purpose. It is all and only His work - BSF

Preparation of the soil and good timing increases the likelihood of proper growth in Christian life. "Let every heart prepare Him room, Let heaven and nature sing - Joy to the World"

Is my soil toxic? People have four dispositions, three are toxic, one is from God

Eyes that see, ears that hear and heart that understands

Receiving a fresh word from the Lord, preparing our hearts (Jer 4:3)

Thinking about my friends in Teen Challenge, Alpha Ministry, SALT, Grace Church, BSF and Tennessee DOC. While we do life together we need to be on guard against being fake and letting God change us from the inside. Praising God for his work in my life and grateful for all my mentors, employers, pastors and friends. Grateful for Church and enjoying the Chosen season 5 in theaters, shows a wonderful connection of passover and the last supper. The Passover Seder 2020 | Jonathan Cahn explains it well. In my prayer for the Church this year, I want to incorporate the "it would have been enough."

I reflect on Jason, and 40 days this lent season. It's good to also reflect on having permanent fast, like I have with drugs, and smoking. These aren't part of my life anymore, hallelujah.

Quit going into self deception (James 1:19-27)

1. Receive the Word (James 1:19-21), swift to hear (Matt 13:9, Rom 10:17), slow to speak (Prov 10:19,17:27), Slow to wrath (Prov 14:29), and a prepared heart (first, confess your sin and ask the Father to forgive us - 1 John 1:9, then by meditating on God's love and grace and asking Him to "plow up" any hardness in our hearts - Jer 4:3, finally have an attitude of meekness/humble (James 1:21, Matt 5:5 AMP, Mat 5:5 MSG). Humble acceptance doesn't argue with the Word, but honors it as the Word of God - not twisting it to conform to your thinking, but letting it renew your mind (Romans 12:1-2).

and if you can swear, ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ in truth, in justice, and in righteousness, then the nations will be blessed by Him, and in Him they will glory.” For this is what the LORD says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your unplowed ground, and do not sow among the thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and remove the foreskins of your hearts, O men of Judah and people of Jerusalem. Otherwise, My wrath will break out like fire and burn with no one to extinguish it, because of your evil deeds.” Jer 4:2-4

God's heart change is required, pride and power must be surrendered. (Jer 4:1-9)

4:3-4) LORD says, "Plow up the hard ground of your hearts! Don't waste good seed among thorns, surrender pride, power - change heart before the LORD or bear unquenchable fire of anger for sin.

  • Today, God's word is living and active (Heb 4:7,12),Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (James 5:16).
  • The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. Luke 8:14
  • But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. Luke 8:15
  • I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Ezekiel 36:26-27

Hosea 10:12: Sow for yourselves righteousness and reap the fruit of loving devotion; break up your unplowed ground. For it is time to seek the LORD until He comes and sends righteousness upon you like rain.

Matthew 13:3-9: And He told them many things in parables, saying, “A farmer went out to sow his seed. / And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. / Some fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow. ...

Mark 4:3-9: “Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. / And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured it. / Some fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow. ...

Luke 8:5-8: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. And as he was sowing, some seed fell along the path, where it was trampled, and the birds of the air devoured it. / Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the seedlings withered because they had no moisture. / Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the seedlings. ...

Isaiah 55:6-7: Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him while He is near. / Let the wicked man forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion, and to our God, for He will freely pardon.

Joel 2:12-13: “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me with all your heart, with fasting, weeping, and mourning.” / So rend your hearts and not your garments, and return to the LORD your God. For He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. And He relents from sending disaster.

Ezekiel 18:30-32: Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each according to his ways, declares the Lord GOD. Repent and turn from all your transgressions, so that your iniquity will not become your downfall. / Cast away from yourselves all the transgressions you have committed, and fashion for yourselves a new heart and a new spirit. Why should you die, O house of Israel? / For I take no pleasure in anyone’s death, declares the Lord GOD. So repent and live!

James 1:21: Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and every expression of evil, and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save your souls.

Romans 12:2: Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

2 Corinthians 7:1: Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

Hebrews 3:7-8: Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice, / do not harden your hearts, as you did in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness,

Proverbs 28:13: He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.

Isaiah 1:16-17: Wash and cleanse yourselves. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil! / Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the oppressor. Defend the fatherless and plead the case of the widow.”

Matthew 3:8: Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.

Luke 3:8: Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham

Lord I give you my heart, I give you my soul, I live for you alone. Every breath that I take, every moment I'm awake, Lord have your way in me. Amen.

GOD is our natural environment

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Heb 11:1-3

  • When GOD wanted to create fish, HE spoke to the sea.
  • When GOD wanted to create trees, HE spoke to the earth.
  • But when GOD wanted to create man, HE turned to Himself.

Then GOD said: "Let us make man in our image and in our likeness".

Note: If you take a fish out of the water it will die; and when you remove a tree from soil, it will also die. Likewise, when man is disconnected from GOD, he dies. GOD is our natural environment. We were created to live in His presence. We have to be connected to Him because it is only in Him that life exists.

Let's stay connected to GOD. We recall that

  • water without fish is still water but fish without water is nothing
  • soil without tree is stilt soil but the tree without soil is nothing
  • GOD without man is still GOD but man without GOD is nothing
My dad discovered this and shared with me and I wanted to remember it.

God's fertilizing work during this final season of grace

Wonderful SALT Praise and Encouragement this morning. Karo talked how good SALT is for the manure pile, reminding me about the barren fig tree parable and Not outward reformation but inward transformation

The Barren Fig Tree Context (Luke 13:6-9)

  • Israel/humanity has been given time to bear fruit but hasn't
  • The gardener (Jesus as intercessor) pleads for "one more chance" Among the weeds of my heart with the Master Gardener
  • He promises to "give it special attention and plenty of fertilizer"
  • This represents the season of grace before judgment

The Salt Teaching (Luke 14:34-35)

The gardener needs fertilizer (manure) to enrich the soil so the fig tree can produce fruit. But what makes fertilizer effective? Salt! Good salt enriches the soil and makes fertilizer potent.

So believers who maintain their "saltiness" (authenticity, holiness, witness, repentance) become part of the enriching environment that helps others bear fruit during this season of grace. We're the salt mixed into the fertilizer that the Master Gardener uses to cultivate fruit in barren lives.

But if we lose our saltiness through:

  • Hypocrisy (the yeast of Pharisees - Luke 12:1)
  • Greed and materialism (the rich fool - Luke 12:16-21)
  • Unrepentant hearts (Luke 13:3, 5)
  • Self-exaltation instead of humility (Luke 14:7-11)

Then we become "good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile" - useless for the very mission of helping others bear fruit before time runs out.

This ties the warning passages together: Be genuine salt, not tasteless pretenders, because you're meant to be part of God's fertilizing work during this final season of grace.

Jesus requires humble, devoted follow through from Disciples (Luke 14)

A) Jesus demonstrates healing on the Sabbath, humble exalted by God (Luke 14:1-24)

B) Jesus teaches following him means 100% yes and costs your whole life (Luke 14:25-33)

C) Being salt is flavorful for soil and manure piles (Luke 14:34-35)

Luke 14:1-6) Sabbath, Lead Pharisee's home dinner, "healing permitted?", then Jesus healed a man

7-11) People try and sit in place of honor, Jesus advice: take the lowest place, then someone will honor you in front of others

 - Saying, "Those who exalt themselves will be humbled, those who humble themselves will be exalted"

12-14) Invite people to luncheon/banquet who can't pay you back

15-24) "banquet in the Kingdom of Heaven?", servant told guest it was ready but they made excuses, so the master invited poor, lame, crippled, blind but still had room so servant urged anyone they could find

25-27) Crowd followed Jesus, "If you want to be my disciple, by comparison you must hate everyone else, including your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple.

 - Saying, "If you don't carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple"

28-30) Don't begin until you count the cost, otherwise you might complete only the foundation before running out of money - everyone would laugh at you

31-33) Kings have counselors, how can 10k defeat 20k? Delegations discuss terms of peace

 - Saying, "So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own."

34-35) Salt is good for seasoning, flavor, soil, manure pile

 - saying, "Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!"

 - Luke 8:4-10) Parable of sower and soil, means “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’"

Luke 8:11-15) Seed: God's word, on hard hearts (devil), rocks (immature), in weeds (distracted), fruitful (honest, good heart, patience)

 - "Success" where failure would have been better

 - Intercessory Faith, believe in God on behalf of another

 - Guidance controls the path, giving counseling while guiding

Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, anointed to bring good news; freedom, favor, vengeance (Isaiah 61:1-2)

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, Because the LORD has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the LORD And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, Isaiah 61:1-2

Clearly, this prophecy is speaking of Jesus (see Luke 4:18-19, Matthew 12:18)
And us, (John 17:18)

Giving good news so that it is received, taken to heart and changes a person is an evidence that it is the Spirit of the Lord God. I've been dwelling on Luke 8:4-15 and had this insight in view of questions regarding morality, "how should I live?"

In Luke 8 Jesus is talking to the crowds, not just his followers. He tells the story of a farmer scattering seed. Obviously, a farmer is putting the seed in the good soil but something else important happens. Some seed fall on the path where immediately the birds eat it, some seed in the weeds where it grows but is choked out, others on rocky ground - grows but wilts in the son. Only the seed on good soil produces.

Jesus explains the parable to his disciple and even the "crowd" if they are curious can look it up Luke 8:9-15

With that I had another insight; It's the devil, the world and flesh that makes God word unfruitful in our lives. Only when it's received in faith can it produce fruit. I like how Luke's Gospel says in Luke 8:15, "But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop." Only God can give us that heart.

God has made a way for everyone, including the crowd in Jesus Christ to have this new heart. It's happened for me and I continue to feel God changing my heart towards compassion, mercy, joy and peace. Today I'm finishing a series at my church called "Share Life". I'm so grateful for the ministry staff who continue to invest in my spiritual development. I'm looking forward to worshiping today with my whole heart and life.

Thankful obedience is our acceptable worship, leads us to understanding

The most important parable Jesus gave was to explain how people hear God's word (seed) and understand it (taken to heart in "good soil").  Preparation of the soil and good timing increases the likelihood of proper growth in Christian life. At church, we always sing songs, hymns and spiritual songs before receiving the message about Christ. One of my favorite songs in Joy to the World. The verse, "Let every heart prepare Him room, Let heaven and nature sing - Joy to the World."

God is our natural environment, everything in life is better with Him in us, we find we are in Him. Yet we must "prepare Him room" in our hearts. Singing truth about who God is and who we are in concert with other believers is a way this happens. People can "hear" praise and worship but not see "heaven and nature" sing. When we stop ourselves from singing we are tempted to judge and not let the word of Christ dwell in our hearts. We can get trapped in the same distracting thoughts and attitudes and miss out on being healed. Jesus describes this effect here:

  • For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.’  Matthew 13:15
I remember years ago in a prayer meeting, we were singing a new song, "be my everything." It has easy to accept and receive statements of "God in my living, there in my breathing, God in my waking, God in my sleeping, God in my resting, there in my working,  God in my thinking, God in my speaking...Be my everything, be my everything, Be my everything, be my everything" I found myself singing this song to God in heaven with my heart full of gratitude. The second verse has harder to accept and received statements, that highlights our frailty and inability to fulfill our hopes and dreams. "God in my hoping, there in my dreaming, God in my watching, God in my waiting." So we go on with life and through the ups and downs we ask God, be my everything. "God in my laughing, there in my weeping, God in my hurting, God in my healing, Be my everything, be my everything, Be my everything, be my everything."

As I worshiped God through this song I couldn't hold back the tears. Because our whole life culminates in the bridge, "Christ in me, Christ in me, Christ in me, the hope of glory, You are everything. Christ in me, Christ in me, Christ in me, the hope of glory, Be my everything"

  • The the negative and positive response to God's word is explained in the parable of the soils from Moses (Deuteronomy 29:4) to the prophets (Isaiah 6:9-10, Ezekiel 12:2, Jeremiah 5:21) and taught by Jesus in all the Gospels (Matthew 13: Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10, John 12:40). The Church in gives us this reality post resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 28:26-27, Romans 11:8).
Yet when we offer ourselves to God as a living sacrifice our heart, mind, and world opens up.
  • The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will. Isaiah 50:4, Romans 12:1-3
  • And he will startle many nations. Kings will stand speechless in his presence. For they will see what they had not been told; they will understand what they had not heard about. Isaiah 52:15.
    • Christine Foster opened her new Bible on the way to BSF the day after she received Jesus as Lord and Savior. God revealed as Psalm 91:1 to her "He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, 'He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust'”. Psalm 91 is considered a song of comfort in Judaism. It is also interpreted as a victory for the Messiah and those who are perfected by him.
  • Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. Isaiah 57:1

Our fruit is for other people

How to Pursue Your Promised Land (Lessons From the Wilderness) - Bill Johnson Sermon | Bethel Church

If I don't have people in my life I don't need the fruit of the Spirit. What's worse is if I don't have people in my life I can think I have the fruit of the Spirit.

Our inner world must become bigger than our outer world (as described in Hebrews 11) until it culminate into the glorious presence of God here and now (Heb 12).

A fruit tree isn't fed fruit, it's given water and soil and converts it into fruit. A fruit tree doesn't evolve from the water and soil, it comes from the seed, a parent, a design. God is our creator and when I let his Word dwell within me, it's going to break open and become a fruit producing tree. Alleluia, Amen.

Peace, serenity is the good soil where wisdom can grow

Daniel 4:27, “‘King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.’

I've been seeing the importance of personal holiness. To have integrity with the Lord. Yesterday at SALT and Light Today we read Matthew 5:3-11 after I searched Be Holy and purchased Top 7 classics on Holiness. Verse 8 jumped at me, "God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God."

  • you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses (Acts 1:8)

Purity Described: "Now may the God of peace— who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood— may he equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him.    All glory to him forever and ever! Amen." - Heb 13:20-21

God grant me the serenity (Peace), to accept the things I can't change (your will, your way, your people), the courage (power) to change the things I can (witness your work in me) - and the wisdom to know the difference.

  • When we take God's word (seed) in our heart it produces everything when it grows up, but it only grows up in good soil. I need to pay attention, how I listen. I need to ask God for wisdom and cultivate the Spirit's work in my heart, like the wise virgins
  • Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. Rev 22:14

Step 6 (Repent): So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. - 2 Timothy 2:22 (ESV)

Step 7 (Follow): But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. - Galatians 5:22-25 (ESV)

Being Salt and light, not intellectual or behavior

listening to Being salt and light by David Pawson, radical changes in cultures and society happen when only 5% of the population becomes the SALT and LIGHT Jesus spoke of the qualities; "for theirs is the kingdom of heaven both now and forever with #1 and #8). Being salt and light is about reality and relationship with God - not belief or behavior modification.

  1. Poor in spirit (devoid of spiritual arrogance, those who regard themselves as insignificant)
  2. mourn (Blessed [forgiven, refreshed by God’s grace] are those who mourn [over their sins and repent], for they will be comforted [when the burden of sin is lifted].)
  3. meek (self-control, it's impossible without God)
  4. crave righteousness (actively seek right standing with God)
  5. merciful (content, sheltered by God’s promises)
  6. pure in heart (Blessed [anticipating God’s presence, spiritually mature] are the pure in heart [those with integrity, moral courage, and godly character], for they will see God)
  7. peacemaker (Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God.)
  8. persecuted because of righteousness. (Blessed [comforted by inner peace and God’s love] are those who are persecuted for doing that which is morally right, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven [both now and forever].
Luke shows what is right

𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝟓:𝟏𝟑-𝟏𝟔; "You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.

𝐋𝐮𝐤𝐞 𝟏𝟒:𝟑𝟒-𝟑𝟓; Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

5% of salt in the soil helps it be fruitful (potassium), salt on manure is a disinfectant.

As I was reading this, I thought I'd look up what I interpreted in Jesus' parables and was shocked not to have salt as one of them. Just the lamp:

The Lamp under a Bushel Matthew 5:14–15 Mark 4:21–25 Luke 8:16–18 Light for all to see, learning by listening and results in abundance (Luke 8:15) or ruin (Luke 8:12-14). Notice Luke 8:10 says "secrets of kingdom of God" and Luke 8:17 says, "Nothing secret will not be known"

I'd like to see what's in between Luke 8 and Luke 14 for more context between Salt and Light.

Fearing God — What It Means and Why It Matters

Jonah 1:9  NIV: "I am a Hebrew and I worship the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

ESV: "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."

In the Bible, “fearing your Creator” and “reaping and sowing” are deeply connected through the idea that God designed a moral and spiritual order into creation. What a person plants in thought, worship, speech, and action eventually produces fruit.

The “fear of the Lord” is not mainly terror. It is reverence, awe, alignment, and recognition that God is Creator, Judge, Sustainer, and Redeemer. It means living with the awareness that life is accountable to Him.

The principle of sowing and reaping explains the consequences of that posture.

One of the clearest passages is in Galatians:

“Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.”

Paul connects this directly to life in the Spirit versus life centered on the flesh. The idea is not merely agricultural. It is covenantal and moral. God built reality so that choices shape character, relationships, and destiny.

From a Biblical perspective:

  • If a person sows pride, rebellion, greed, deception, or selfishness, those things eventually produce corruption, fracture, and death.
  • If a person sows humility, obedience, mercy, truth, generosity, and faithfulness, those things produce life, peace, and righteousness.

The fear of the Lord changes what a person chooses to sow.

Proverbs repeatedly says:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.”

Wisdom in Scripture is not abstract intelligence. It is living in harmony with how God made the world. A person who fears God understands:

  • actions matter,
  • hidden things are seen by God,
  • consequences are real,
  • and eternity matters more than temporary gratification.

This is why sowing and reaping are often tied to judgment and stewardship.

In Ecclesiastes, Solomon speaks about youth, pleasure, labor, and mortality, then concludes:

“Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.”

Ecclesiastes wrestles with the apparent randomness of life, yet concludes that God ultimately brings all things into account. Sowing and reaping may not always appear immediate, but God’s justice is not absent.

There is also a redemptive dimension.

In the Gospel, humanity has already sown sin collectively and individually. The consequence is separation from God. Yet Jesus Christ enters the harvest humanity deserved and offers grace instead. Believers then “sow to the Spirit” not to earn salvation, but because a transformed heart produces new fruit.

Jesus also used agricultural imagery constantly:

  • seeds,
  • soils,
  • harvests,
  • vineyards,
  • fruit-bearing trees.

Why? Because spiritual life grows progressively. Fear of God is the soil posture of humility and receptivity. What is planted in that soil eventually becomes visible.

Biblically, fearing your Creator means recognizing:

  • God designed reality,
  • moral actions have consequences,
  • spiritual laws are as real as physical laws,
  • and every life becomes a harvest of what it trusted, loved, and pursued.

So sowing and reaping are not separate from fearing God. They are one of the main reasons Scripture calls people to fear Him wisely and lovingly.

The following is Based on John Bunyan's "A Treatise of the Fear of God" (1679)

This book is about one big idea: fearing God. That does not mean being scared of God the way you are scared of a monster. It means having deep respect and love for God — so much that you do not want to do anything that displeases him.

The Bible says this many times. Psalm 128:1 says, "Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord." Revelation 14:7 says simply, "Fear God."

What Does "Fear God" Mean?

The word fear is used three ways in the Bible when it talks about God.

1. Fear Means God Himself

Sometimes "the Fear" is just another name for God. Jacob called God "the Fear of my father Isaac." Why? Because God is great and awesome. He made everything. He is everywhere. When he shows up, even good news from God feels overwhelming. When Jacob saw God in a dream, he woke up shaking and said, "How awesome is this place!" Even angels showing up made people fall to the ground in terror. If angels are that amazing, how much more is God himself?

God is so great that even his kindness makes us want to bow down. When Job finally saw God clearly, he said, "Now I see you — and I am nothing." That is what the right fear of God feels like.

2. Fear Means God's Word

The Bible is also called "the fear of the Lord." That is because God's Word is the rulebook for how we should fear and obey him. When we read the Bible, we learn how to fear God the right way.

Psalm 19 lists many names for God's Word — law, statutes, commandments, judgments — and then adds, "The fear of the Lord is clean." They all mean the same thing: God's written Word.

We should tremble when we read the Bible. When Josiah heard God's Word read, he tore his clothes in sorrow. God noticed and honored him for it.

Why is the Bible so powerful?

  • It comes from God himself.
  • It tells us where we will spend forever — heaven or hell.
  • It cannot be broken. Not one word of it will ever fail.

Kinds of Fear — Not All Fear Is Good

There are several kinds of fear. Not all of them are good.

Bad Fear #1 — The Fear That Makes You Run from God

When Adam sinned, he was afraid and hid from God. That was a wrong fear. It did not make him want to come back to God. It made him run away. Some people today do the same thing. When the Word of God convicts them of sin, they stop going to church. They do not want God close. This kind of fear is wrong. It leads away from God, not toward him.

Bad Fear #2 — The Fear That Keeps You Stuck

Some people come to church and know the right things, but they never really live for God. They are afraid — not of punishment exactly, but of what it might cost them. Like the servant in the parable who buried his talent. He was afraid of his master, but in the wrong way. His fear made him do nothing. That is bad fear too.

Bad Fear #3 — The Fear That Leads to Made-Up Religion

Some people are afraid of God, but instead of trusting Jesus, they try to earn God's favor. They add their own rules and rituals. The Pharisees did this. Some people today do this. They think if they do enough, God will like them. But this kind of fear misunderstands God. It is fear without faith.

Good Fear That Comes at First — But Does Not Stay Forever

When the Holy Spirit first works in someone's heart, he shows them their sin. The person feels the weight of it. They cry out, "What must I do to be saved?" This is a good kind of fear — because it is true. They really are sinners. They really do need Jesus. But this fear is only meant to last until they trust Jesus. After that, the Spirit comes as a Father, not a judge. We no longer have to fear being thrown out — we are children of God.

The Real Fear of God — A Lasting Grace

Now we come to the best kind of fear. This is the kind that God plants in the hearts of his children. It never leaves. It is not a scary fear. It is more like deep respect, deep love, and deep care not to hurt the one you love most.

Where Does This Fear Come From?

  • God's love — God puts this fear in us because he loves us. It is part of the new covenant.
  • A new heart — You cannot have this fear with an old, hard heart. God gives us a new heart, and this fear grows there.
  • God's Word — The more the Bible soaks into us, the more we fear God rightly.
  • Faith — We believe God's promises, and that creates this fear.
  • Repentance — When we are truly sorry for sin, this fear grows.
  • God's mercy — When we see how kind God has been to us, we want to honor him more.

What Does This Fear Look Like?

Here are the things that flow out of true fear of God:

  1. Reverence — You treat God's name, his Word, and his worship with great respect.
  2. Watchfulness — You watch your heart, your mouth, and your actions so you don't sin.
  3. Fellowship — You want to talk about God with other believers and grow together.
  4. Holy worship — You come to church with awe, not just going through the motions.
  5. Self-denial — You give up things that might hurt others or dishonor God.
  6. Honesty — You do what you do simply for God, not for show.
  7. Caring for others — You help people in need, especially fellow believers in trouble.
  8. Prayer — You pray often, earnestly, and from the heart.
  9. Obedience even when it costs you — Like Abraham, you trust God enough to give up what you love most.
  10. Humility — You think less of yourself and more of God and others.
  11. Hope — Because you fear God, you also hope in his mercy.
  12. Delight in God's commands — You actually want to do what God says.
  13. Enlarged heart — Your heart grows bigger — more love for God and people.

The Blessings of Fearing God

God has made special promises to people who fear him. Here are some of them:

  • God will be your help and shield (Psalm 115:11)
  • God will teach you the right path (Psalm 25:12)
  • God will show you his secrets and his covenant (Psalm 25:14)
  • God's eye is always on you for good (Psalm 33:18)
  • You will not lack any good thing (Psalm 34:9–10)
  • Angels will camp around you (Psalm 34:7)
  • God's salvation is close to you (Psalm 85:9)
  • God's mercy covers you forever (Psalm 103:17)
  • God pities you like a father (Psalm 103:13)
  • God will give you what you truly desire (Psalm 145:19)
  • God takes delight in you (Psalm 147:11)
  • Both the small and great are blessed (Psalm 115:13)

Who Does NOT Have This Fear?

Here are signs that someone lacks the fear of God:

  • They are proud and full of themselves.
  • They are greedy — money matters more than God.
  • They overeat and get drunk and live only for pleasure.
  • They lie regularly.
  • They cry to God in trouble but ignore him in good times.
  • They hurt or mock God's people.
  • They do not tremble at God's Word.
  • They look down on others who fear God.

How to Grow in the Fear of God

Here is how you can grow in this grace:

  1. Learn the difference between right and wrong fear. Don't confuse the fear that leads away from God with the fear that draws you to him.
  2. Know the new covenant. God has promised to be your Father through Jesus. Rest in that.
  3. Keep your faith strong. Remember what God has done for you.
  4. Set God before you. Think about his greatness. The more you think about him, the more you will fear him rightly.
  5. Love his Word. Read it. Obey it. Let it soak in.
  6. Pray for this grace. Ask God to make your heart fear him more.
  7. Devote yourself to it. Think about God. Talk about God. Stay near him.

Things That Kill This Fear — Watch Out For:

  • A hard heart — sin hardens the heart fast.
  • A prayerless life — no prayer means little fear.
  • A careless, lazy spirit — drifting away from God weakens fear.
  • Greed — it pushes God's Word out of your heart.
  • Unbelief — it cuts off the very thing that feeds this fear.
  • Forgetfulness — forget what God has done, and fear shrinks.
  • Complaining against God — murmuring is the opposite of awe.
  • Pride — a big view of yourself means a small view of God.
  • Envy — envying sinners shows you have forgotten who God is.

A Word to People Who Fake It

Some people look like they fear God but do not. They say the right things and do some of the right actions — but their heart is empty. God sees right through this. Pretending to fear God while your heart is far from him is dangerous. The Bible says the hypocrite's hope will be cut off. Their joy lasts only a moment.

Do not fake the fear of God. Ask God for the real thing.

The Good News

If you truly fear God — even a little — you are blessed.

You do not have to be a preacher or a scholar or rich or strong. You can be sick in bed. You can be poor. You can have nothing the world values. But if you fear God, you have everything that matters.

When the sailors asked Jonah who he was, he did not brag about his job or his hometown. He said: "I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven."

That is the greatest thing any person can say about themselves.

"Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord." — Psalm 128:1

Lord answers the sky's plea for clouds, the sky answers the earth with rain (Hosea 2:21)

On three occasions today the Lord brought me to Hosea:

Hosea 10:12 12 I said, ‘Plant the good seeds of righteousness, and you will harvest a crop of love. Plow up the hard ground of your hearts, for now is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and shower righteousness upon you.’

Hosea 2:21

21 “In that day, I will answer,” says the Lord. “I will answer the sky as it pleads for clouds. And the sky will answer the earth with rain.

Luke 8:15,18

15 And the seeds that fell on the good soil represent honest, good-hearted people who hear God’s word, cling to it, and patiently produce a huge harvest.

18 “So pay attention to how you hear. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given. But for those who are not listening, even what they think they understand will be taken away from them.”

Isaiah 55:9-11) For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.  “The rain and snow come down from the heavens and stay on the ground to water the earth. They cause the grain to grow, producing seed...

From BSFonline.org: Bowing Humbly Before Our God Most High, The Doctrine of God the Father

The opportunity to gaze into Isaiah’s encounter with the living God offers us a profound privilege...Seeing our heavenly Father as infinitely exalted above us provides a necessary foundation to fully appreciate what God has done on our behalf. God bridged the chasm that separated us by sending His Son in the flesh to die a painful death to overcome death’s stranglehold on us.

We are not God’s equal in any way. To see God as a friend or force we can take or leave as a matter of convenience or choice misrepresents undeniable truth. If we fail to recognize God’s supremely exalted place over us, our view of ourselves remains corrupted. Without understanding God’s transcendence, we remain clueless about the inexpressible wonder of His nearness.

Many things about God should leave us speechless and undone, like Isaiah. The more deeply we understand who God truly is, the more wonderful and shocking His tender love becomes. The God who stands infinitely beyond us in every way longs to draw us close. Can you believe that? He loves us too much to ignore the gap between us. The Father demonstrated His barrier-breaking love in the amazing sacrifice of His Son. God came near to us so that we could draw near to Him. The holy, holy, holy Lord God Almighty loves us with an everlasting love.

Will you rejoice that God made a way to cleanse you? He sends His people out to tell the world who He truly is. May a fresh sense of wonder and worship fill us as we ponder the majesty and mercy of our exalted God!

Light of listening and bearing the cross (Luke 8:1-9:45)

 A) Jesus teaches about the light of listening, hear God's word and do it (Luke 8:1-21)

 - Jesus demonstrates his power over nature, demon-possessed people, life/health (Luke 8:22-56)

B) Jesus gives power to disciples, healing, cast out demons, feeding 5,000 (Luke 9:1-17)

C) Jesus begins teaching about the cross, transcending time (Luke 9:18-45)

Luke 8:1-3) Jesus, apostles & disciples bring good news of kingdom of God everywhere

4-10) Parable of sower and soil, means “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’"

11-15) Seed: God's word, on hard hearts (devil), rocks (immature), in weeds (distracted), fruitful (honest, good heart, patience)

 - Eyes that see, ears that hear and heart that understands

16-18) Light is for all to see, everything concealed is seen in the light of listening, be careful how you hear and be given more (fruitfulness)

19-21) Jesus family hear the word of God and do it

22-25) Woke Jesus rebukes the wind and waves resulting in calm, "where is your faith [confidence in Jesus]?"

26-33) Before the encounter Jesus commanded unclean spirit out of the man (29), demons acknowledge Jesus as Son of God (28), Jesus asks for name and gives permission for Legion to enter herd of pigs.

34-39) herdman interpret the miracle as a terrible waste of money, spreading like gangrene to everyone so they asked Jesus to leave them, so Jesus does and commands the healed man to proclaim all God has done for him.

 - Tale of two cities, no one is neutral with Jesus

 - I think I found a new life verse: Luke 8:39, Money, the power of God's word and dreams

40-56 ) Jesus heals Jairus' daughter and another woman to teach about expectations (Luke 8:40), faith (Luke 8:48,50), and reactions to events (Luke 8:52,53,56)

 - An interesting contrast,  the demon-possessed man is told to tell everyone (Luke 8:39), but parents not to tell what happened (Luke 8:56), personal testimony over witnessing? I wonder about this young girls life, reminds me of Gram Seed (from Alpha "What should I do with the rest of my life?")

 - Prayer is intimacy with God that leads to the fulfillment of His purpose

Luke 9:1-6) Jesus gives disciples power and authority to cast out demons, heal all diseases and tell everyone about the kingdom of God - so they began (Luke 9:6 a new life verse)

7-11) Herod and people speculate Jesus's identity, crowds followed to Bethsaida, kingdom of God, healing

12-15) Twelve; send them away for food, Jesus; you give them something to eat, with a work breakdown plan

16-17) 5 loaves, 2 fish - prayed thanks, all satisfied, 12 basketfuls of leftovers

 - Jesus Feeds 5,000+ and Promise we will do more

18-20) Jesus, private prayer, w/disciples crowds say but, who do say I am? God's Messiah

21-22) Son of Man must suffer rejection, killed, on the third day raised to life

 - Three Days, recurring theme in the Bible for changing your heart

23-27) Jesus; Desire discipleship? Deny yourselves, take up cross daily, follow me - give your life to save it - some here will see kingdom of God before they die (i.e. not Judas).

 - Give up your own way (Luke 9:23), carry your own cross AND follow me (Matthew 16:24, Luke 14:27, Mark 8:34), worthy (Matthew 10:38). The Cross of Christ is the wisdom and power of God (1 Cor 1:17-18),

 - To carry our cross and follow him means we do the same with our lives: he took our wrong-doing upon himself (Galatians 3:13), hostility is gone (Ephesians 2:14,16), desire and sinful nature nailed to Jesus Cross (Galatians 5:24), for our Salvation (Galatians 5:11, 6:12,14), humble obedience to God (Philippians 2:8), he reconciled everything to himself (Colossians 1:20), canceled the record of charges against us, disarming devils (Colossians 2:14-15)

 - Carry your cross and follow Jesus in conduct: Philippians 3:18, "For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ." - rejecting the Son of God (Heb 6:6), no good fruit in ministry except the personal fruit of understanding means everything (Heb 6) - Trust God to grow as we water and sow (Hebrews 6:4-12, 1 Cor 3:5-9)

 - Remaining in Jesus brings relational consequences with God and people

 - Personal Holiness is being honest with God daily

 - The Cross for a Believer

28-30) Eight days later Peter, John, James to mountain, in prayer face/clothes bright as lightning, glorious splendor Moses and Elijah

 - Offerings that won't spoil: Honey and Salt

31)  They spoke about his departure (decease, exodos), which he was about to bring to fulfillment (accomplish) at Jerusalem. (happened with us will happen with you  Deuteronomy 34:5-6; 2Kings 2:11)

Jesus eternal reign over all enemies began at his ascension

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,  fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. (Heb 12:1-3)

32-36) Pillar of cloud envelops them "this is my Son, whom I have chosen, listen to him", they kept it secret (Luke 9:21-22)

37-40) next day, crowd, only son, "spirit seizes him", screams, convulsions, foaming mouth, disciples couldn't drive out, persistent-destroying him

41-43) "unbelieving, perverse generation", Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed boy, amazed greatness of God

44-45) Listen carefully, Son of Man delivered into hands of men, didn't understand, hidden from them afraid to ask

To be found in the book of life, walk with God in righteousness (Rev20:14-15)

Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death—the lake of fire. And if anyone was found whose name was not written in the Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.  Rev 20:15

At that time those who feared the LORD spoke with one another, and the LORD listened and heard them. So a scroll of remembrance was written before Him regarding those who feared the LORD and honored His name. Malachi 3:16

I've been thinking about eternity lately, what a wonderful thought about being in perfect harmony with our LORD and Savior. Being heavenly minded makes us most useful in this life, to see what our heavenly father is doing and taking his lead. Abiding and setting our hope firmly on Him. We're getting ready for Christmas in the Skyway next Tuesday and I've just purchased giveaways and prizes.

Everyone needs encouragement, last night we got to pray for Benjamin and Winn for healing, wisdom/understanding, and to be filled with the Holy Spirit. It's been great to get to know these guys and see them grow through our Alpha experience. Often times we hold back our true selves but when we come into the light, humbly and honestly we receive the blessed presence of God, renewing our hope and flushing us with love. All the songs of Christmas come into my heart and mind and I rejoice.

We prayed for the whole world to know Jesus this year and I'm reminded that the whole world will know Jesus, either in regret or in thanksgiving. Jesus describes in Luke 16:22-31.

All this makes me want to see where else the book of life is talked about:

  • “At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch over your people, will rise up. There will be a time of distress, the likes of which will not have occurred from the beginning of nations until that time. But at that time your people—everyone whose name is found written in the book—will be delivered. Multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake: some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt. Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.  Daniel 12:1-3
  • Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels....“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” Matthew 25:41,46
  • Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear His voice / and come out—those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment. John 5:28-29

It's about hearing the Word of God and taking it to heart so that it produces righteousness.

  • But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Matthew 13:23
  • The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. They will throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Whoever has ears, let them hear. Matthew 13:41-43
  • So will it be at the end of the age: The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous / and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:49-50

God's sovereignty in Salvation, meets our free choice in that he tells us if you go there you'll die, if you come here you'll live.

  • And all who dwell on the earth will worship the beast—all whose names have not been written from the foundation of the world in the Book of Life belonging to the Lamb who was slain. Revelation 13:8
  • Does God change his mind?

Because we are saved, we experience the fulfilment of work God gave us individually (Eph 2:8-10)

  • Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:20
  • Yes, and I ask you, my true yokefellow, to help these women who have contended at my side for the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life. Philippians 4:3
  • Like them, he who overcomes will be dressed in white. And I will never blot out his name from the Book of Life, but I will confess his name before My Father and His angels. Revelation 3:5

Without God, our lives are driving toward eternal destruction (as we lie and celebrate false prophets):

  • But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who practices an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. Revelation 21:27
  • he too will drink the wine of God’s anger, poured undiluted into the cup of His wrath. And he will be tormented in fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. / And the smoke of their torment rises forever and ever. Day and night there is no rest for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.” Revelation 14:10-11
  • New song, gospel proclaimed and final harvest (Rev 14 in perspective)
  • But the beast was captured along with the false prophet, who on its behalf had performed signs deceiving those who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. Both the beast and the false prophet were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. Revelation 19:20

Without God, we suppress the truth about God, adding non-sense (fluid gender, abortion as freedom)

  • And if anyone takes away from the words of this book of prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and the holy city, which are described in this book. Revelation 22:19
  • You must not add to or subtract from what I command you, so that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am giving you...See that you do everything I command you; do not add to it or subtract from it. Deuteronomy 4:2, 12:32
  • Every word of God is flawless; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. / Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you and prove you a liar. Proverbs 30:5-6

Once the truth about God, and ourselves is suppressed we search for new messiahs (religions, philosophy)

  • But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be under a curse! / As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be under a curse! Galatians 1:8-9
  • Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace James 3:13-18

It comes down to receiving God into our lives his way (Jesus Christ), else we "will be a horror to all mankind"

  • “As they go forth, they will see the corpses of the men who have rebelled against Me; for their worm will never die, their fire will never be quenched, and they will be a horror to all mankind.” Isaiah 66:24
  • May they be blotted out of the Book of Life and not listed with the righteous Psalm 69:28

 - Bring everything in the light, bear good fruit (Gal 5:22-23, John 8:12). Jesus enables us to have the light of light
God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 1 John 1:5-7
